Chapter 45 - Chapter 45- Stay A Little Longer

The festival ended, but the lights didn't leave right away.

Some of them still glowed faintly across campus, like the night wasn't ready to let go just yet.

Students were slowly heading back to dorms.

The noise had softened into scattered laughter and distant footsteps.

The four of them walked together at first.

Zhao Ming was still talking. Of course.

Lin Yue was still pretending to be annoyed. Also of course.

But near the path that split toward different dorm buildings, Zhao Ming suddenly stopped.

"I am tired," he announced.

"I will go this way."

"That's not even your dorm direction," Jiang Chen said.

"It is today," Zhao Ming replied confidently.

Lin Yue looked at him.

"You're doing it again."

"Yes," he said.

"And you're coming with me."

She sighed, but didn't argue much this time.

"Goodnight," she said to Su Ran and Jiang Chen.

"Goodnight," Su Ran replied.

Zhao Ming pointed at both of them like a warning sign.

"Behave."

"Go away," Jiang Chen said.

And just like that, they were gone.

---

The Quiet Path

The campus felt different now.

Quieter.

Cooler.

Almost like it was holding its breath after the noise of the festival.

Su Ran and Jiang Chen walked slowly, side by side.

No rush.

Their hands brushed once, then stayed together.

"You had fun?" he asked.

"Yeah," she said.

"It was really nice."

"Even with Zhao Ming?" he added.

She laughed.

"He made it more chaotic. But also more fun."

"That sounds like him," he said.

---

Slowing Down

When they reached the path near her dorm, neither of them stopped immediately.

They kept walking a little further than usual.

Like both of them were quietly pretending they hadn't reached the end yet.

Su Ran noticed and smiled slightly.

"You're walking slower," she said.

"So are you," he replied.

She didn't deny it.

---

The Pause

They finally stopped under a tree, where one of the leftover festival lights still glowed faintly above them.

It wasn't bright.

Just enough to see each other clearly.

Su Ran looked up for a second.

"Even after everything's over, the lights are still here," she said.

"Yeah," he replied.

"Like the day isn't fully finished."

She looked back at him.

"Do you ever feel like… you don't want certain days to end?" she asked.

He didn't think long.

"Yeah," he said.

"Today?" she asked.

He nodded.

"Today."

---

Closer

There was a quiet moment.

The kind that stretched just enough to feel important.

Su Ran stepped a little closer.

"Then don't let it end too quickly," she said softly.

He looked at her.

The same way he always did.

But softer now.

Warmer.

Like he didn't have to hide it anymore.

---

The Kiss

This time, there was no hesitation.

No overthinking.

No awkward pause.

Jiang Chen gently pulled her a little closer and kissed her.

Not quick.

Not rushed.

It lasted longer than before.

Soft, but certain.

Like something that had been building quietly finally found its moment.

Su Ran's hand rested lightly against him, steady.

Comfortable.

When they finally pulled away, neither of them spoke immediately.

They just stood there, close, still holding onto that moment.

---

After

Su Ran looked at him, a little breathless, a little shy, but smiling.

"That wasn't a 'quick' kiss," she said.

"No," he replied.

"Good," she said softly.

He almost smiled.

---

A Small Truth

She rested her forehead lightly against his shoulder for a second.

"You've changed," she said again.

He looked down at her.

"Because of you?" he asked.

She shook her head slightly.

"No," she said.

"You were always like this. You just didn't show it before."

He thought about that.

Maybe she was right.

---

The Almost End

When they finally stepped apart, it felt a little harder than usual.

Not because something was wrong.

But because something felt right.

And right things were harder to walk away from.

"I should go," she said.

"Yeah," he replied.

But neither of them moved immediately.

---

The Real Ending

After a few seconds, she smiled and said,

"Goodnight."

"Goodnight," he said.

She turned and walked toward her dorm.

Halfway there, she turned back.

He was still standing in the same place, watching her.

She smiled again.

Then went inside.

---

Alone

Jiang Chen stayed there for a few seconds longer.

The light above him flickered once.

Then stayed steady.

He let out a quiet breath and looked up.

The night was almost completely quiet now.

But something felt different.

Not louder.

Not bigger.

Just… fuller.

---

Somewhere Else

On another path, Zhao Ming was walking with Lin Yue.

"I gave them time," he said proudly.

"You always do," she replied.

"I am a good friend," he said.

"You are very obvious," she said.

He looked at her.

"You still walk with me anyway."

She didn't answer.

But she didn't walk away either.

---

Back to Them

That night, Su Ran lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

She touched her lips lightly, then covered her face with her pillow.

Not to hide.

Just because she was smiling too much.

And somewhere not too far away, Jiang Chen sat at his desk, not really studying.

Just thinking.

About the festival.

The lights.

The walk.

And that moment under the tree.

---

Because some moments didn't need to be loud to matter.

Some didn't need witnesses.

Or photos.

Or words.

Some moments just stayed quietly in your memory,

and made everything else feel a little more real.

And that night,

without saying it out loud,

both of them knew something had changed again.

Not suddenly.

Not dramatically.

But in a way that felt certain.

Like a story that started in the last row

was still moving forward,

one small, unforgettable moment at a time.
