Chapter 20 - Chapter 20- The Mischief Of The Last Year

The first week of their final year had passed quickly, and the three of them found themselves settling into familiar rhythms. Classes were harder now, but somehow, everything seemed lighter when they were together.

It was a Friday afternoon, and the school felt unusually lively. Students whispered about upcoming events, teachers prepared for weekend assignments, and the golden sunlight streamed through the classroom windows, making the dust in the air glitter like tiny stars.

Su Ran, Zhao Ming, and Jiang Chen were sitting in the last row, as usual.

---

Zhao Ming's New "Plan"

Zhao Ming leaned back in his chair, balancing on the last two legs, and whispered loudly, "I have a plan."

Su Ran groaned immediately. "I know this plan is going to involve trouble, snacks, or both."

"You only say that because you don't appreciate genius," Zhao Ming replied.

"What kind of genius?" Jiang Chen asked, looking up from his notebook.

"The kind that will make the last year unforgettable," Zhao Ming said dramatically.

Su Ran raised an eyebrow. "Last year or disciplinary action?"

Zhao Ming shrugged. "Potentials are unlimited."

The Paper Plane Incident

A few minutes later, Zhao Ming took a sheet of scrap paper and folded it carefully.

"I present… the perfect paper plane," he whispered, giving it a final crease with exaggerated precision.

Su Ran watched as he launched it across the classroom. The plane flew straight for two seconds and then veered sharply—directly at the back of the teacher's chair.

Jiang Chen leaned forward, expression neutral. "You do know this is the first week of the year, right?"

Zhao Ming grinned. "Exactly. That's why the impact is stronger. First impressions matter."

Su Ran laughed quietly. "Impact on what? Detention?"

The plane hit the floor harmlessly, and Zhao Ming lunged forward dramatically to retrieve it before anyone noticed.

"Smooth," Jiang Chen said flatly.

"Smooth like a hero landing," Zhao Ming replied.

Su Ran shook her head but couldn't hide her smile.

Shared Snacks Under the Table

During the next class, Su Ran had a bag of chips. Zhao Ming, predictably, leaned under the table and stole a few without asking.

"Hey!" she whispered sharply, but her tone had a playful edge.

"You only bring snacks to test my agility," he said.

"Or to annoy me," she replied.

Jiang Chen, sitting just behind them, quietly passed a small piece of chocolate under the table to her without looking up.

Su Ran blinked. "What—?"

"Just a bribe," Jiang Chen said calmly.

Zhao Ming leaned back dramatically. "I see how it is. Betrayal by chocolate. I demand fair distribution!"

Su Ran shoved a chip at him. "Fine, take one. Don't tell anyone I'm generous."

Zhao Ming smiled triumphantly. "Generosity recognized. Future historian will note this day."

The Mini-Competition

After lunch, the three decided to wander into the empty courtyard while waiting for their next class.

"Last year, first challenge," Zhao Ming announced. "We race to the tree over there. Loser buys bubble tea."

Su Ran rolled her eyes. "Are you serious?"

"I never joke about bubble tea," he replied.

Jiang Chen said quietly, "I don't need to run to participate."

"You're already losing by attitude," Zhao Ming said.

They lined up. Zhao Ming sprinted forward dramatically, flailing his arms. Su Ran pushed off lightly, running steadily, and Jiang Chen… walked with precision, calculating his steps.

"Cheating by calculating distance!" Zhao Ming shouted mid-run.

"Efficiency is not cheating," Jiang Chen replied calmly, overtaking Zhao Ming near the finish line.

Su Ran reached the tree just a step behind Jiang Chen, laughing breathlessly. Zhao Ming collapsed on the ground dramatically.

"I am emotionally devastated," he groaned.

"You lost," Su Ran said simply.

"Yes, yes," Zhao Ming replied. "But history will remember my style!"

Playful Secrets

Later, sitting under the tree, they decided to draw doodles on each other's notebooks. Zhao Ming's notebook was full of exaggerated stick-figure heroes performing impossible feats, while Su Ran's notebook became a mix of comic sketches and secret messages.

Jiang Chen, predictably, drew neat geometric shapes along the margins of his pages. But occasionally, he added small, almost imperceptible doodles—a tiny cat in the corner, a sun peeking from behind the text, a flower next to a heading. Su Ran noticed them. Zhao Ming didn't.

"You do that on purpose, don't you?" Su Ran whispered to Jiang Chen.

"No," he said quietly. "It's just… easier this way."

"You're lying," she said softly. "You know exactly who will notice."

He didn't reply, but she caught him looking at her from the corner of his eyes again.

The Sun Sets on the Courtyard

By the time they left the courtyard, the sun was dipping low, casting a warm orange glow across the schoolyard. Leaves rustled gently in the breeze, and the air carried a faint chill of early autumn.

Walking home together, Zhao Ming chattered about the next "adventure" he planned for the year, Su Ran laughed at his antics, and Jiang Chen walked beside them quietly, occasionally adding a calm observation or a witty remark.

Su Ran realized, as she glanced at both of them, that the final year would not only be stressful with exams and responsibilities—but it would also be full of these small, playful, unforgettable moments.

Every joke, every prank, every shared chocolate or secret glance felt heavier now. It wasn't just friendship anymore. There was something unspoken, something hovering quietly beneath the surface, building slowly as their last year together marched forward.

And in the back of her mind, Su Ran knew one thing for certain:

These moments, these playful afternoons, were the ones she would remember most—long after the exams, long after the school year, and even long after graduation.

Because sometimes, the most important parts of growing up aren't the achievements or the milestones—they are the little moments of laughter, teasing, and quiet companionship with the people who matter most.
