Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA

Zara didn't sleep.

The rain had stopped hours ago, but the storm inside her hadn't.

She sat by the window in her room, knees pulled to her chest, staring at the dark city lights beyond the glass.

One name kept echoing in her mind.

Elena.

The way the strange man had said it.

The way Ethan's face had changed.

The way silence answered her question.

It hurt more than she wanted to admit.

Because somewhere deep down, a thought had already begun to form.

Did he choose me because I reminded him of someone else?

Her chest tightened.

She had been forced into this marriage, thrown into a world she didn't understand, and now she was beginning to feel something dangerous.

Attachment.

And maybe… something more.

That made the thought even worse.

A soft knock sounded on the door.

Zara didn't answer.

Another knock.

Then Ethan's voice.

"Zara."

She closed her eyes.

"I want to be alone."

Silence.

Then—

"We need to talk."

Zara let out a bitter laugh.

"Now you want to talk?"

The door remained closed.

For a few moments, nothing happened.

Then his voice came again.

"Please."

That one word caught her off guard.

Ethan never said please.

She hesitated.

Then stood up and walked to the door.

When she opened it, he was there.

Still in the same clothes from earlier, shirt slightly wrinkled, hair damp from the rain and struggle.

For once, he didn't look perfect.

He looked tired.

Human.

Broken.

Zara stepped aside silently.

He entered.

The room felt smaller with him in it.

He stood near the door for a moment, as if unsure where to begin.

Then he spoke.

"Elena was someone I loved."

The words hit Zara's chest like a stone.

Even though she already suspected it, hearing it out loud made it real.

She looked away.

"I figured."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"She wasn't just important to me. She was everything."

Zara's fingers curled tightly at her sides.

"Then why am I here?"

Her voice came out softer than she intended.

Painfully vulnerable.

Ethan looked at her.

His eyes held something she had never fully seen before.

Regret.

"I didn't marry you because you look like her."

Zara's eyes snapped back to his.

"Then why did that man say that?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Because he wanted to hurt you."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the truth."

Zara shook her head.

"No, Ethan. I need the whole truth."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he moved closer.

"Sit."

Zara hesitated, then sat on the edge of the bed.

Ethan remained standing for a moment before pulling a chair closer.

The distance between them felt charged.

Heavy with everything unsaid.

"Elena and I met five years ago," he began.

His voice was calm, but there was strain beneath it.

"She wasn't from my world."

Zara frowned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

"She wasn't wealthy. She wasn't part of the corporate life."

His expression softened slightly, like he was seeing something far away.

"She was simple. Kind. Honest."

Zara's chest tightened again.

"She made me feel normal."

The room fell silent.

Zara didn't interrupt.

She could see this was difficult for him.

"We were together for two years," he continued. "I thought I could protect her from everything that came with my life."

His voice darkened.

"I was wrong."

Zara swallowed.

"What happened?"

Ethan's hands clenched slightly.

"She found out something about one of my business rivals."

Zara's breath caught.

"The same people threatening us?"

"Yes."

His answer was immediate.

"They wanted information from me. They couldn't get to me directly, so they came after her."

Zara felt cold all over.

"And then?"

Ethan looked away.

"She disappeared."

The words hung in the room.

Zara's voice softened.

"You never found her?"

His silence was answer enough.

Her heart ached for him.

For the first time, she understood the weight he carried.

The reason for the walls.

The coldness.

The control.

It was fear.

Fear of losing someone again.

"So where do I come in?" Zara asked quietly.

Ethan's eyes met hers.

"Your family."

Zara frowned.

"My family?"

He nodded.

"Your aunt's debts weren't random."

Her heart stopped.

"What?"

"They were tied to the same people."

Zara stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

His voice was firm.

"They were pressuring your family. Using debt as leverage."

Zara's mind raced.

"My aunt never told me."

"She wouldn't."

Zara stood up abruptly.

"So you married me because they were targeting my family?"

"Yes."

The word hit hard.

Her chest tightened.

"So this was pity?"

"No."

Ethan stood too.

"It was protection."

Zara laughed bitterly.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

She looked at him, emotions swirling.

"Then why not tell me from the beginning?"

His eyes darkened.

"Because I didn't want you involved."

Zara stared at him in disbelief.

"I was involved the moment you married me."

Silence.

He had no answer to that.

For the rest of the night, neither of them said much.

But something had shifted.

The truth, painful as it was, had cracked the wall between them.

Zara lay awake later, replaying everything.

Elena.

The threats.

The debts.

Her aunt.

Ethan.

Everything connected.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, her feelings had become complicated.

Because now she didn't just see him as the cold man she was forced to marry.

She saw the pain behind his silence.

The fear behind his control.

The loneliness behind his distance.

And that made her heart soften in ways she wasn't prepared for.

The next morning, Zara woke to voices downstairs.

Sharp voices.

Male voices.

She quickly got out of bed and stepped into the hallway.

One of the guards was speaking urgently.

"…they were seen near the east gate."

Zara's heart pounded.

Ethan's voice followed.

"Double the security."

"Yes, sir."

She moved closer.

Ethan turned and immediately saw her.

His expression changed.

"You shouldn't be out here."

Zara frowned.

"Something happened?"

He hesitated.

Then—

"They're watching the house."

A chill ran down her spine.

"They?"

"The same people."

Zara's fingers tightened on the railing.

"So it's getting worse."

Ethan didn't deny it.

That afternoon, Ethan insisted Zara stay in the study with him.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered.

Ethan glanced up from his laptop.

"It's temporary."

Zara sat across from him, arms crossed.

"So I'm basically under house arrest."

His jaw tightened.

"You're safe here."

Zara rolled her eyes.

"You really need new words."

For a brief moment—

Ethan almost smiled.

Almost.

The sight surprised her.

Then his expression returned to normal.

But that small crack in his usual demeanor stayed with her.

Hours later, the tension of the day had eased slightly.

Zara stood by the bookshelf, scanning the titles.

One caught her attention.

A leather-bound journal.

She reached for it.

"Don't."

Ethan's voice stopped her.

Zara turned.

"What?"

He stood up quickly.

His eyes locked on the book.

"That's private."

Zara looked between him and the journal.

"Elena?"

Ethan's silence confirmed it.

Her chest tightened.

"I wasn't trying to invade your privacy."

His expression softened slightly.

"I know."

Zara hesitated.

Then quietly—

"Do you still love her?"

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

The room went still.

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

Then said—

"I never stopped."

The honesty hurt more than she expected.

She looked away quickly.

"Right."

Something in her voice must have given her away.

Because Ethan stepped closer.

"Zara."

She shook her head.

"It's fine."

But it wasn't.

Not really.

Because hearing that made something painfully clear.

Her feelings for him were no longer neutral.

And that terrified her.

That evening, the electricity went out again.

The entire house plunged into darkness.

Zara's heart jumped.

"Ethan?"

No answer.

Then footsteps.

Fast.

Urgent.

A loud crash downstairs.

Then shouting.

Zara froze.

Something was wrong.

Before she could think, the door to the study burst open.

A shadow moved.

A man.

Her breath caught.

It was one of them.

She stepped back.

"Stay away from me!"

The man lunged—

But before he could reach her, Ethan appeared.

He grabbed the intruder and slammed him against the wall.

Everything happened so fast.

A struggle.

A crash.

A shout.

Then the guards rushed in.

The man was dragged away.

Zara stood trembling.

Ethan turned to her immediately.

"Are you okay?"

For the first time—

There was genuine fear in his voice.

Zara nodded shakily.

"Yes."

Ethan stepped closer.

His hands lightly touched her shoulders.

Checking.

Making sure she was unharmed.

The contact sent a strange warmth through her.

His eyes searched hers.

"You're safe."

This time, the words didn't sound frustrating.

They sounded real.

Comforting.

Before either of them could think—

Zara moved.

She threw her arms around him.

The action shocked both of them.

But Ethan didn't pull away.

For a moment, he stood still.

Then slowly—

His arms wrapped around her.

Warm.

Strong.

Protective.

Zara closed her eyes.

For the first time since arriving here—

She felt safe.

Truly safe.

And in that moment, she realized something dangerous.

She was falling for him.
