Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Second Fragment

The chamber didn't celebrate his victory.

No light. No relief. No sense of completion.

Only silence.

Heavy. Watching.

Ren stood there, breathing hard, his body screaming in protest. Every muscle ached, his ribs burned, and his core pulsed unevenly—strained from what he had just forced it to do.

But his eyes were locked on one thing.

The fragment.

Floating where the guardian had fallen.

"…So it really leaves something behind," he muttered.

The shard in his hand pulsed faintly.

Once.

Then again.

Like it was responding.

Calling.

Ren stepped forward slowly. Each movement felt heavier than the last, but he didn't stop. Couldn't stop.

Because something in him already knew—

This mattered.

A lot.

"…You understand now," the voice echoed faintly.

Ren didn't look up. "…Understand what?"

"That strength here is not given."

His fingers closed around the floating fragment.

It was colder than the first.

Sharper.

Denser.

"…It's taken."

The moment he touched it—

Everything changed.

Pain.

Instant.

Violent.

"GHH—!"

Ren dropped to one knee as the fragment reacted, dark energy surging through his arm like a flood breaking through a dam. His core flared in response—cracks lighting up beneath his skin.

"…Too much—!"

The energy didn't stop.

It collided with the shard already in his hand.

Two pulses.

Out of sync.

Clashing.

Ren gritted his teeth, his vision blurring as the pressure built.

"…Ren…"

The voice wasn't from above.

Not the same one.

Softer.

Familiar.

"…Mira…"

For a split second, his focus broke.

And the energy surged harder.

"Stay with me…" the faint voice whispered.

Ren's breathing hitched.

"…I can't lose now…" he forced out.

His grip tightened around both fragments.

"No matter what this is…"

The energy raged.

Tearing through him.

Breaking him apart from the inside.

"…I'll make it mine."

The shard pulsed.

Then the second fragment answered.

For a moment—

Chaos.

Uncontrolled.

Unstable.

Then—

Something shifted.

The pulses aligned.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

The energy stopped fighting—

And started merging.

Ren gasped as the pressure dropped suddenly. Not gone—but controlled. Contained.

"…What…?"

He looked down at his hand.

The two fragments had changed.

Not fused completely—

But connected.

Thin lines of dark energy linked them together, pulsing in a slow, steady rhythm.

His core responded.

Not violently this time.

Calmly.

"…It's stabilizing…" he whispered.

"For now," the voice above said.

Ren's expression tightened slightly. "…There's always a catch."

"Yes."

"…What is it?"

Silence.

Then—

"The more you take…"

The chains above groaned faintly.

"…the closer you come to becoming something else."

Ren exhaled slowly. "…Yeah. I figured it wouldn't be free."

He pushed himself to his feet again, his body still shaking slightly—but stronger than before.

Different.

He raised his hand.

The dark energy formed again—

But this time—

It was smoother.

More stable.

It didn't lash out or flicker.

It flowed.

Ren stared at it for a second.

"…This is new."

"Your limit has shifted."

"…Good."

Because he was going to need it.

The chamber rumbled again.

Not violently this time.

But deliberately.

Like something deeper had noticed.

"…Yeah," Ren muttered.

"I'm definitely not alone down here."

The spiral path at the far end of the chamber opened further, revealing more darkness below.

Deeper.

Colder.

Worse.

Ren looked at it for a moment.

Then sighed.

"…Guess I don't get a break."

The shard pulsed once more in his hand.

Not warning.

Not fear.

Encouragement.

Ren adjusted his stance, ignoring the pain still lingering in his body.

"…Alright."

He stepped forward.

"…Let's see how deep this goes."
