Chapter 9 - BUTTON

The plane was already in the air.

No turning back now.

Director Seren Vale stood near the window.

Hands behind his back.

Face calm.

Voice sharp like glass.

Below them was **Jakarta**

A huge city.

Lights everywhere.

Ten million people living normal lives.

Or trying to.

Four members stood inside the aircraft.

Two pilots.

Two field agents.

And Seren.

A long metal case sat locked near the center.

Nobody touched it.

Everyone knew what was inside.

Seren spoke first.

High voice.

Cold voice.

"Today this city will be free."

Nobody answered.

One pilot looked nervous.

His hands were tight on the controls.

Seren continued.

"Free from hunger."

"Free from chaos."

"Free from pain."

One agent was sweating.

His name was Daren.

Young.

Maybe twenty five.

Daren asked slowly,

"Sir… free how?"

Seren looked at him.

Like a teacher looking at a slow student.

"You already know."

Daren looked at the metal case.

His breathing became heavy.

Seren shouted to the other agent.

"Prepare the device."

The case opened.

Inside was the weapon.

Nuclear bomb.

Silent.

Heavy.

Final.

Daren suddenly spoke.

"Director….... wait."

Seren turned slowly.

"Yes?"

Daren hesitated.

"Is this really the only way?"

Nobody moved.

Seren asked back,

"What do you suggest instead?"

Daren struggled.

"There must be another plan."

Seren smiled.

"There always is."

Hope appeared.

Then Seren finished.

"And they all failed."

Daren shook his head.

"But ten million people…"

Seren cut him off.

"Numbers."

Daren answered fast.

"They are not numbers."

Seren stepped closer.

"Then what are they?"

Daren answered,

"People."

Seren asked calmly,

"And can we save all people?"

Daren said nothing.

Seren continued.

"If we try to save everyone… we lose everyone."

Daren whispered,

"But choosing who dies…"

Seren interrupted again.

"Is leadership."

Silence.

Seren lowered his voice.

"You think I enjoy this?"

Daren looked unsure.

Seren continued.

"I carry this pain so others don't have to."

"I'm Taking the role of sacrifice."

Daren asked,

"But why them?"

Seren answered.

"Because they were not selected."

Daren asked,

"Selected for what?"

Seren paused.

Then said,

"The future."

"Project void."

Seren continued.

"We only have space for ten million."

"You know this."

Daren nodded slowly.

Seren stepped closer.

"If this city lives… another dies."

Daren froze.

That was new pressure.

Seren continued.

"If you stop this… you choose another city instead."

Daren's face changed.

Now the choice felt real.

Seren whispered,

"So tell me."

A pause.

"Which city do you want to die instead?"

Daren couldn't answer.

Because any answer meant death.

Seren stepped back.

"Exactly."

Then Seren used another trick.

Guilt transfer.

"If you delay this… suffering continues."

"Food riots."

"Disease."

"Collapse."

He pointed down.

"I end suffering fast."

Daren whispered,

"This is killing."

Seren answered,

"This is mercy."

"I'm freeing all of them from this pain."

Those words hit hard.

Daren shook his head again.

"No…"

Seren leaned closer.

"Tell me Daren."

A pause.

"How many did you see die in the war?"

Daren answered quietly.

"Too many."

Seren asked,

"Slow deaths?"

Daren nodded.

Seren said,

"I give fast endings."

Silence again.

Then Seren used the strongest trick.

Purpose.

"You joined to save humanity."

Daren nodded weakly.

Seren continued.

"So save it."

Daren broke slowly.

Seren placed a hand on daren's shoulder.

"History will not remember this moment."

A pause.

"But it will remember survival."

Daren stopped arguing.

That was the moment he lost.

Seren nodded to the other agent.

"Proceed."

The weapon was moved.

Systems activated.

Timers ready.

Seren said softly,

"Today we cut away rot."

"Today we free them from suffering."

Nobody said anything.

Everybody went silent.

The release door opened.

Seren gave the order.

"Drop."

The weapon started falling into city.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then light filled the distance.

White.

Too bright.

The plane shook slightly.

Then silence again.

Seren closed the door.

"Step complete."

Daren fell to his knees.

He started crying.

Not small tears.

Full crying.

Like something broke inside.

"I… I helped…"

His hands shook badly.

"I helped kill them…"

Seren came near him.

Voice soft now.

Controlled.

"You helped save ten million others."

Daren shook his head.

"I see their faces…"

Seren answered,

"That means you are human."

Another trick.

Turn guilt into virtue.

Seren continued.

"Monsters feel nothing."

"You feel."

"So you are not a monster."

Daren cried harder.

"But I still did it…"

Seren answered,

"And you will carry it."

A pause.

"That is the price of protecting the future."

Daren slowly stopped talking.

Not healed.

Just numb.

Seren stood up.

"We move to next location."

The plane changed course.

Far below…

nothing moved anymore.

Seren did not look back.

Far away…

Manav sat near a broken wall.

Priya beside him.

Arjun standing.

Manav spoke first.

"I keep thinking."

Arjun asked,

"About what?"

Manav answered,

"My name."

Priya knew what he meant.

"Someone removed it."

Arjun nodded slowly.

Manav continued,

"Someone saved me."

Priya said softly,

"Maybe accident."

Manav shook his head.

"No."

He looked serious.

"Someone chose."

Arjun crossed his arms.

"And what will you do?"

Manav answered fast.

"I will find them."

Priya looked shocked.

"Find them?"

Manav nodded.

"I need to thank them."

Arjun disagreed.

"That is dangerous."

Manav answered,

"War is over."

Arjun replied,

"Danger is not over."

Manav stood up.

Determined now.

"We leave for space soon."

Priya looked worried.

"Yes."

Manav continued.

"If I don't find them now… I never will."

Arjun shook his head.

"You don't even know where to start."

Manav answered,

"We start somewhere."

Arjun sighed.

"You are stubborn."

Manav answered,

"Yes."

Priya asked,

"What if we fail?"

Manav answered simply,

"Then we fail."

Arjun asked,

"What if truth is bad?"

Manav answered,

"Then I still want it."

Silence.

Then Arjun asked,

"Why does this matter so much?"

Manav answered quietly,

"Because someone believed I should live."

"I need to know why."

Priya looked at him.

She saw something new.

Not fear.

Purpose.

Arjun finally asked,

"And if that person is dangerous?"

Manav answered,

"Then I will still say thank you."

Priya smiled.

Arjun asked one last time.

"You really won't drop this?"

Manav shook his head.

"No."

Long silence.

Then Arjun said,

"Fine."

Priya looked surprised.

"You're agreeing?"

Arjun nodded slowly.

"I won't let him go alone."

"He's like my little brother."

"I won't leave him alone."

Priya sighed in disbelief.

"Then I come too."

Manav looked at both.

"Thank you."

Arjun said,

"Don't thank us yet."

Manav asked,

"Why?"

Arjun answered,

"Because finding truth changes people."

Manav still nodded.

"I still want it."

The three stood together.

For the first time not as survivors.

But as people choosing something.

Manav looked ahead.

"Let us find him."

Arjun asked,

"And if he doesn't want to be found?"

Manav answered,

"Then we find why."

Priya asked quietly,

"And if the reason is bigger than us?"

Manav answered,

"Then we grow bigger."

"Let us find the person who saved me."

"Let's go."
