Chapter 40 - A Quiet Night Between Worlds

The evening settled in quietly.

Neither of them spoke much after their earlier conversation. The silence wasn't uncomfortable, but it carried a weight neither of them tried to lift. Xu Chen stood in the kitchen for a while, scrolling through his phone, then finally placed an order.

Nothing elaborate.

Nothing heavy.

Just simple, light dishes—something easy to eat, something that wouldn't demand conversation.

When the food arrived, Xu Chen unpacked everything carefully.

He didn't call Aum immediately.

He arranged the plates first.

Two bowls. Two sets of chopsticks. Food placed neatly between them.

Only then did he turn slightly.

"Come. Eat."

Aum walked over and sat down across from him.

The food was simple—stir-fried vegetables, light noodles, a mild tofu dish, and soup. Nothing intense in flavor, nothing overwhelming. It matched the mood of the room.

Xu Chen served Aum first.

He didn't ask what he wanted.

He simply filled his bowl, adjusted the portion slightly, then placed it in front of him.

Aum watched the movement.

"You consistently do this."

Xu Chen didn't look up.

"Do what?"

"Serve me before yourself."

Xu Chen paused for a fraction of a second.

Then continued eating.

"Habit."

Aum accepted the answer.

Even though it did not feel like one.

They ate in silence.

It wasn't the kind of silence that needed to be filled.

The kind that existed simply because both people were present.

Occasionally, Xu Chen would adjust something on the table without thinking—slide a dish closer, refill the soup, remove an empty plate.

Aum noticed every detail.

When they finished, Xu Chen stood up first.

"Leave it."

Aum looked at him.

"I can assist."

"It's fine."

Xu Chen gathered the plates and walked to the sink.

Water ran softly as he rinsed them, movements steady and practiced. There was something grounding about the way he did it—simple, unhurried, familiar.

Aum remained seated for a moment.

Then stood.

"I will be outside."

Xu Chen glanced over his shoulder.

"In the garden."

Xu Chen nodded once.

The Garden

The night air was cool.

Aum stood near the edge of the garden, looking out into the quiet distance. The world here had a different rhythm at night—slower, softer, less defined.

He had started recognizing these patterns.

Footsteps approached behind him.

Xu Chen joined him a moment later.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then Xu Chen exhaled lightly.

"You know…"

Aum turned slightly.

"When I found you that day…"

Aum listened.

"You were behind the mountain. Barely conscious. Completely unresponsive."

Xu Chen let out a small breath of amusement.

"I thought you were… fragile."

Aum frowned slightly.

"I was not."

Xu Chen smiled.

"You definitely looked like it."

Aum considered that.

"That assessment was inaccurate."

Xu Chen let out a quiet laugh.

"Yeah. I figured that out later."

A pause.

"You turned out to be… something else entirely."

Aum tilted his head.

"Clarify."

Xu Chen glanced at him briefly, then looked away.

"A problem."

Aum processed that.

"I have not intentionally caused disruption."

Xu Chen shook his head, a faint smile still lingering.

"That's not what I meant."

Aum waited.

Xu Chen hesitated for a second.

Then muttered under his breath, almost to himself—

"What kind of person have I fallen for…"

Aum heard the words.

But not the meaning behind them.

"You have fallen?"

Xu Chen blinked. "What?"

"You stated that you have fallen."

Xu Chen turned toward him. "I didn't mean it like that."

"How did you mean it?"

Xu Chen stared at him for a second.

Then exhaled.

"Forget it."

Aum nodded.

"Understood."

Xu Chen looked away again.

A small, helpless smile tugged at his lips.

Back Inside

They returned to the room quietly.

Xu Chen looking at Aum, "Go shower."

Aum nodded and walked toward the bathroom.

When he stepped out later, the room was dimly lit.

Xu Chen was already done, sitting on the couch, scrolling through his phone.

He looked up.

And paused.

Aum's hair was still slightly damp, his expression calm, posture relaxed. There was something effortlessly composed about him—something that made it difficult to look away.

Xu Chen looked back at his phone.

Too quickly.

"We'll sleep here."

Aum stopped.

"This room?"

"Yes."

Aum glanced around.

"There are multiple rooms available."

Xu Chen leaned back slightly.

"It's inefficient to use all of them."

Aum studied him.

"That reasoning lacks consistency."

Xu Chen clicked his tongue softly.

"Then don't analyze it so much."

Aum considered that.

"…Understood."

Xu Chen stood up.

"I'll take the couch."

"That is unnecessary."

"I'm fine."

Aum looked at the bed.

Then at Xu Chen.

"You prefer proximity."

Xu Chen froze for half a second.

"That's not—"

He stopped.

"…Just sleep."

Aum didn't question further.

He lay down.

Xu Chen remained standing for a moment longer.

Then moved to the couch.

The room was quiet again.

For a while, only the faint sound of night filled the space.

Then Xu Chen spoke.

"What's your planet called?"

Aum opened his eyes.

"Brihyansh."

Xu Chen repeated it softly.

"…Brihyansh."

"What is it like?"

Aum took a moment.

"It is structurally similar to Earth in terms of terrain and atmospheric composition. However, there are distinct differences."

Xu Chen turned his head slightly toward him.

"Like?"

"There are rings surrounding the planet."

Xu Chen blinked.

"Rings?"

"Yes."

"…Like Saturn?"

"Similar in concept. Not identical in composition."

Xu Chen let out a small breath.

"So your sky just… has rings in it?"

"Yes."

Xu Chen stared at the ceiling.

"That sounds unreal."

Aum didn't respond.

"Our atmospheric density is slightly higher. Breathing patterns differ."

Xu Chen turned back toward him.

"And you adjusted to Earth?"

"Yes."

"Just like that?"

Aum considered it.

"It required time. But adaptation is expected."

Xu Chen let out a quiet laugh.

"Of course it is."

A pause.

"What about… people?"

Aum shifted slightly.

"We exist within structured social systems."

"Families?"

"Yes."

Xu Chen raised an eyebrow.

"I thought you said it's different."

"It is."

Aum continued.

"We do not have parents in the way you define them. We have producers."

Xu Chen blinked.

"Producers?"

"Yes."

"That sounds… very technical."

"It is functional."

Xu Chen leaned his head back.

"Okay… continue."

"We are raised within clusters. These clusters operate as collective units."

"So… like a shared family?"

"Yes."

"But not the same."

Xu Chen nodded slowly.

"In what way?"

Aum paused.

"Attachment is not prioritized over function."

Xu Chen frowned slightly.

"Meaning?"

"We are connected. But not bound to prioritize one individual above all else."

Xu Chen processed that.

"So people don't… choose each other?"

"They do. But not based on emotional dependency."

Xu Chen let out a breath.

"Then how?"

"Compatibility. Efficiency. Contribution."

Xu Chen laughed softly.

"That sounds like a system, not a relationship."

"It is both."

Xu Chen shook his head.

"No drama?"

"Correct."

Xu Chen smirked slightly.

"That's unrealistic."

Aum did not react.

"What about… partners?"

Aum answered calmly.

"Selection is based on alignment of traits. Gender is not a determining factor."

Xu Chen raised an eyebrow.

"So… anyone?"

"If compatible."

Xu Chen looked at him for a second longer.

Then looked away.

"…Interesting."

Aum continued.

"Reproduction is managed through controlled biological processes."

Xu Chen held up a hand.

"Okay, that part I'll process later."

Aum nodded.

Silence returned.

But it was different now.

Not heavy.

Not distant.

Just… filled.

Xu Chen stared at the ceiling.

"That's a lot."

"Yes."

Xu Chen turned his head slightly toward Aum.

"You don't think it's strange?"

Aum considered.

"It is normal for me."

Xu Chen let out a quiet breath.

"Right."

A pause.

Then Aum spoke again.

"There is one inconsistency."

Xu Chen looked at him.

"What?"

Aum's gaze was steady.

"My responses around you do not align with standard behavioral patterns of Brihyansh."

Xu Chen raised an eyebrow.

"Meaning?"

"They are inefficient."

Xu Chen stared at him.

Then let out a small laugh.

"Then your system has a flaw."

Aum thought about that.

"…That is a possibility."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"Good. Makes you a little more human."

Aum didn't respond.

But he didn't disagree either.

The room fell quiet again.

This time—

not because there was nothing to say.

But because neither of them felt the need to say more.

And somehow—

that felt enough.
