Chapter 32 - THE LINE YOU CAN'T UNCROSS

Adrian didn't reply that night.

Not because he didn't want to.

But because every answer felt wrong.

---

Are we okay?

It should have been simple.

Yes.

No.

We'll figure it out.

But none of those felt true anymore.

So he left it.

And somehow—

That made it worse.

---

Lina noticed.

Of course she did.

---

The next morning, her phone was still quiet.

No follow-up.

No explanation.

No "sorry, I fell asleep."

Just silence.

---

And this time—

It didn't feel like distance.

It felt like avoidance.

---

"You didn't sleep."

Lina looked up.

Clara stood by her locker again, arms crossed.

"I'm starting to think you enjoy pointing that out," Lina muttered.

Clara didn't smile.

"He didn't reply, did he?"

Lina didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

---

Clara sighed softly.

"That means something shifted more than you think."

"I know," Lina said quietly.

"And you're going to talk to him?"

Lina nodded.

"I have to."

---

Because this time—

Waiting wasn't an option.

---

She found him near the same place.

The steps.

Always the steps.

---

Adrian was already there.

Sitting.

Still.

Like he hadn't moved much since yesterday.

---

"Hey."

He looked up.

"Hey."

Same word.

Different weight.

---

"You didn't answer me," Lina said.

Straight to it.

No hesitation.

---

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"I didn't know how to."

That was honest.

But it didn't make it easier.

---

"It was a yes or no question," Lina said.

"It's not a yes or no situation."

"That's not fair."

"Neither is pretending it is."

---

Silence.

Tight.

Immediate.

---

Lina stepped closer.

"You could've said something," she said.

"I am saying something now."

"That's not the same."

"I know."

---

That stopped her.

Because he wasn't arguing.

He was just… stating things.

And that somehow felt worse.

---

"So what's going on?" Lina asked.

Adrian ran a hand through his hair.

Frustration slipping through—not at her, but at everything.

"I talked to Ethan," he said.

"I figured."

"And it's not simple."

"I didn't think it would be."

---

Another pause.

Then—

"But that doesn't answer my question," Lina added.

---

Adrian looked at her.

And this time—

There was no way around it.

---

"No," he said.

---

The word landed.

Clear.

Sharp.

Final.

---

Lina's chest tightened.

"…No?" she repeated.

---

"We're not okay," Adrian said quietly.

---

There it was.

No avoiding it.

No softening it.

Just truth.

---

Lina swallowed.

"Because of him?"

Adrian shook his head.

"Not just because of him."

That mattered.

And didn't.

At the same time.

---

"Then what?" she asked.

---

Adrian stood up slowly.

Facing her fully now.

---

"Because everything changed," he said.

"Because now I'm questioning things I didn't question before."

"Because I don't know how to act like nothing's different when it is."

---

Lina stared at him.

"Questioning what?"

---

That—

That was the dangerous question.

---

Adrian hesitated.

Just for a second.

But she saw it.

---

And that hesitation—

That was the answer.

---

"You don't even know, do you?" she said softly.

"I'm trying to figure it out."

"And where does that leave me?"

---

That hit.

Hard.

Immediate.

---

Adrian didn't answer right away.

Because he didn't have a good answer.

---

"That's not fair," Lina said, her voice tightening.

"I chose you."

"I didn't ask you to do that," Adrian replied.

---

Wrong thing to say.

Again.

---

Lina stepped back slightly.

Like the words physically pushed her.

---

"You keep saying that," she said.

"Because it's true."

"And what—so it doesn't matter?"

"That's not what I said."

"Then what are you saying?"

---

Adrian exhaled sharply.

"I'm saying I don't want you to feel like you're stuck here because of a choice you made."

---

"I'm not stuck," Lina said.

"But you're unsure."

"And you're not?" she shot back.

---

Silence.

Because now—

They were both in it.

---

"I didn't expect this," Adrian said.

"Neither did I."

"Then why does it feel like I'm the only one being blamed for it?"

"I'm not blaming you!"

"Then what is this?"

---

Lina didn't answer.

Because she didn't know anymore.

---

Across the courtyard, Ethan stood still.

Watching.

Not stepping in.

But not walking away either.

---

Vanessa leaned against the wall nearby, arms crossed.

"This is it," she murmured.

Clara frowned. "It doesn't have to be."

Vanessa's gaze didn't move.

"It already is."

---

Back between them—

The air felt heavier.

Harder to breathe in.

---

"I need space," Adrian said finally.

---

Lina froze.

There it was.

Again.

But this time—

Different.

---

"For how long?" she asked.

"I don't know."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

---

That broke something.

Not loudly.

But deeply.

---

"So I just… wait?" she asked.

"I'm not asking you to wait."

"That's exactly what you're doing."

---

Adrian looked at her.

And for the first time—

He didn't try to fix it.

---

"Maybe," he said quietly.

---

And that—

That was worse than anything else.

---

Lina nodded slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Like she was trying to hold something together inside herself.

---

"Okay," she said.

---

Adrian frowned slightly.

"Okay?"

---

She met his gaze.

And this time—

There was something different there.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

---

Clarity.

---

"Yeah," she said.

"If you don't know where you stand… then I won't stand here for you to figure it out."

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

---

Adrian didn't expect that.

---

"I'm not asking you to leave," he said.

---

"You don't have to," Lina replied softly.

---

And then—

She turned.

---

And walked away.

---

Not hesitating.

Not stopping.

Not looking back.

---

Adrian stood there.

Watching.

Not moving.

---

Because this time—

He knew.

---

She wasn't just stepping back.

---

She was drawing a line.

---

And some lines—

Once crossed—

You don't get to go back the same way.

---

Across the courtyard, Ethan exhaled slowly.

Clara looked down.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

---

Because now—

Everything had changed again.

---

Not because of a confession.

Not because of doubt.

---

But because someone finally chose

not to wait.
