Chapter 59 - Chapter 59: The Silence of the Blade and the Burning City

The Silence of the Blade & The Burning City

"This test is called the 'Silence of the Blade in the Storm'," Shimotsuki's gruff voice echoed through the dojo.

Zoro stood in the center of the wooden floor, his eyes tightly covered by a thick black cloth. All around him, hanging from the ceiling by practically invisible threads, were hundreds of tiny silver bells.

"The rules are simple," Shimotsuki barked, packing tobacco into his pipe. "I will attack. You will defend. If I hit you, you fail. If you bump into a single thread and a bell rings, it means your spatial awareness is garbage. You fail."

Before Zoro could even nod, a sharp whistle cut through the air.

Zoro tilted his head. A small stone grazed his cheek, hitting the wall behind him. Then came another, and another. Shimotsuki was flicking pebbles with bullet-like speed from different angles. At the same time, a loud buzzing filled the room—the old man had released a jar of angry hornets into the dojo.

Zoro's mind went blank. He didn't use his ears; he used his spirit. He felt the trajectory of the pebbles and the chaotic buzzing of the hornets. He swayed, ducked, and twisted his body smoothly. Not a single bell rang.

"Not bad," Shimotsuki grunted. "Phase Two. Distinguish the threat."

The old man kicked a rack of practice swords. Ten blades flew through the air directly at Zoro. Nine were dull wooden bokkens. Only one was real, forged steel.

Don't block the wood. Find the bloodthirst, Zoro thought.

He felt the heavy, dead weight of the wooden swords passing by him, completely ignoring them. Then, he sensed it—the cold, sharp "breath" of real metal. Zoro's hand snapped to his hip. He drew the Sandai Kitetsu an inch from its scabbard.

CLANG!

The real sword bounced off Zoro's blade and stabbed into the floor. The nine wooden swords clattered harmlessly against the back wall.

Shimotsuki's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't stop. "Phase Three. True Intent!"

Suddenly, a suffocating, murderous aura exploded to Zoro's left. It was pure killing intent. Instinct screamed at Zoro to block left, but his Observation Haki whispered something else. The aura was loud, but there was no physical mass behind it.

Zoro ignored the terrifying pressure on his left and violently swung his sword to his right.

CRACK!

Zoro's blade perfectly intercepted Shimotsuki's wooden cane, which was inches away from striking Zoro's ribs.

"You didn't fall for the fake out," Shimotsuki said, a genuine smirk forming around his pipe. He stepped back. "Final test, brat. Above you."

Shimotsuki tossed a handful of dried maple leaves into the air directly over Zoro's head.

"Cut the one leaf that has a hole in the center. One strike only."

Zoro breathed in. He tuned out the buzzing hornets, the ringing in his ears, and the smell of smoke. He listened to the gentle fluttering of the leaves. One of them... sounded just slightly different as the air passed through its damaged center.

Zoro drew the Wado Ichimonji in a flash of white.

Swish.

He sheathed the sword with a sharp click and pulled the blindfold off.

A single leaf drifted to the floor, sliced perfectly in half right through the center hole.

"How did I do?" Zoro asked confidently.

Shimotsuki scoffed, turning his back to hide his absolute amazement. "Intermediate level. Your senses are sharp, but your focus is still arrogant. However... it's enough. Tomorrow, we start Armament Haki."

Yamanashi Prefecture - Gran Torino's Residence

Green lightning crackled violently, illuminating the dingy living room.

Midoriya bounced off the ceiling, kicked off the wall, and launched himself directly at Gran Torino with blazing speed. One For All: Full Cowling!

Gran Torino didn't even blink. Using his Jet Quirk, the old man ricocheted off the floor, perfectly predicting Midoriya's linear attack. He spun in mid-air and slammed his boot squarely into the back of Midoriya's head, driving the boy face-first into the floorboards.

"Too predictable," Gran Torino sighed, landing softly on the table. "You have the speed, but your movements are stiff. You're broadcasting your attacks."

Midoriya groaned, slowly pushing himself up. He rubbed his face, but a massive smile broke out across his features. He looked at his hands. They weren't broken or purple.

Gran Torino saw the smile and grinned. "You didn't break anything. You figured it out, kid. The training wheels are off. Go put your costume on. We're heading to Hosu City for real patrol."

Hosu City - Rooftop

"All they talk about is him," Tomura Shigaraki hissed, violently scratching his neck. "The Hero Killer... Stain, Stain, Stain. No one even cares about the League of Villains anymore."

Kurogiri stood silently behind him as Shigaraki looked down at the peaceful, bustling streets of Hosu.

"Let's show them," Shigaraki whispered, a twisted, maniacal grin stretching across his face. "Let's crush his precious 'stage'."

Shigaraki snapped his fingers.

Behind him, three massive, grotesque Nomus with exposed brains stepped out of Kurogiri's warp gates. With terrifying shrieks, the monsters leaped off the roof, plummeting toward the city streets.

Seconds later, massive explosions ripped through the center of Hosu. Flames painted the night sky red. The city of heroes was instantly transformed into a burning warzone.

The Bullet Train

Midoriya sat quietly in his seat, looking at his phone. He stared at Iida's contact name, a heavy knot of worry twisting in his stomach.

Suddenly, the world turned sideways.

KRAK-BOOOOM!

The side of the bullet train was violently ripped open. Screams filled the cabin as a severely injured Pro Hero was thrown through the shattered metal, crashing into the seats. Right behind him, a massive, winged Nomu tore its way inside, screeching demonically.

"Get down!" Gran Torino roared. In a blur of speed, the old man slammed into the Nomu's chest, rocketing both of them out of the gaping hole and into the burning city below. "STAY IN YOUR SEAT, KID!" Gran Torino's voice echoed back.

But Midoriya didn't stay seated. He rushed to the massive hole in the train wall and looked out.

His blood ran cold.

Hosu City was burning. Buildings were collapsing, and pillars of smoke choked the sky. Midoriya gripped the torn metal edge of the train.

Iida-kun... Zoro-kun... they're down there!

Without a second thought, green lightning erupted around Midoriya's body. He leaped out of the moving train, diving straight into the flaming chaos.

Hosu City - South District

Zoro was walking down a quiet sidewalk, wearing his U.A. uniform with his black sword case securely strapped to his back.

"Where the hell did the dojo go?" Zoro grumbled, looking at a street sign he couldn't read. "I just went out for a walk... this city is designed like a maze."

Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the ground beneath his feet. A shockwave rattled the windows around him, and a towering pillar of fire erupted into the sky just a few blocks away. The sounds of sirens and panicked screaming instantly filled the air.

Zoro stopped. He looked at the flames reflecting in his lone eye.

"A villain attack?" Zoro muttered. He remembered the chaos of the USJ incident. His hand instinctively reached over his shoulder, resting on the hard strap of his sword case. A fierce, battle-hungry grin spread across his face.

"Finally... something interesting."

Ignoring all hero protocols and laws, Zoro sprinted directly toward the explosions.

Hosu City - Dark Alleyway

Far away from the fires and the rampaging Nomus, the true nightmare was unfolding in the shadows.

Tenya Iida ran heavily down a blood-stained alleyway. He rounded the corner and stopped dead in his tracks.

The Pro Hero "Native" was slumped against the brick wall, paralyzed and bleeding heavily. Standing over him was a man draped in tattered red rags, slowly licking a fresh coat of blood off his jagged katana.

The Hero Killer.

"You..." Iida breathed, his vision going red. He ignored the paralyzed hero entirely. His engines flared to life as pure, blinding rage consumed his mind. "I AM INGENIUM'S BROTHER! I CAME TO TAKE YOUR LIFE!"

Stain paused. He slowly turned his head, his cold, dead eyes locking onto the trembling boy in armor. The pressure in the alleyway instantly dropped, feeling like a heavy ocean of pure malice pressing down on Iida's chest.

"Ingenium's brother?" Stain whispered, his voice like grinding glass. He looked at Iida's furious eyes, completely ignoring the dying hero on the ground.

"Those are not the eyes of a hero," Stain judged coldly, raising his bloodstained blade. "Those are the eyes of a selfish child consumed by vengeance. You abandoned a dying man just to strike at me."

Iida froze, completely paralyzed by the sheer terror radiating from the killer.

Stain took a step forward, his killing intent suffocating the alleyway. "You are a fake. And this world must be purged of fakes. I will kill you."
