The next day, Maya went to the care house again, but this time her steps were calmer and more certain. She was no longer carrying the same fear she had before. Instead, there was a quiet steadiness in her, the kind that came from knowing her mother was safe and being properly taken care of.
When she entered the building, the same peaceful atmosphere welcomed her. The staff greeted her politely, already familiar with her, and she made her way upstairs without stopping.
She opened the door and stepped in.
Her mother was awake, sitting comfortably, and the moment she saw Maya, her face lit up with a soft smile. Maya walked in and sat beside her, taking her hand gently as she always did. This time, she did not need to study her closely to notice the difference. Her mother looked stronger, more at ease, and it showed in the way she spoke and moved.
"How are you feeling today?" Maya asked.
"Better," her mother replied. "Every day feels easier now."
Maya nodded slowly, her shoulders relaxing as she heard that. For a moment, they sat quietly, simply enjoying the calm between them before Maya spoke again.
mum_ i want to tell you something," she said.
Her mother looked at her with interest. "What is it?"
Maya took a small breath before answering. "I'm going back to school."
Her mother's expression changed immediately, her eyes lighting up with clear happiness. "Really?"
Maya nodded. "Yes. I've already decided. I can't keep putting it on hold."
"That's good," her mother said quickly. "That's very good."
Maya smiled faintly, feeling that warmth from her words.
"I've already spoken about it," she added. "Everything is fine."
Her mother watched her carefully. "With your husband?"
Maya nodded. "Yes."
Her mother seemed satisfied with that answer and held her hand a little tighter. "I'm happy for you. You've always been serious about your studies. You shouldn't let anything stop you."
"I won't," Maya replied.
There was a small pause before her mother spoke again, her voice softer this time. "He treats you well, doesn't he?"
Maya hesitated for just a moment, then nodded. "Yes."
It was a simple answer, but it carried truth.
Her mother smiled gently. "Good. He's already done a lot."
Maya's eyes moved slightly around the room, taking in everything again. The care, the comfort, the peace. She could not deny it.
"Yes," she said quietly.
Her mother looked at her for a moment, then smiled again. "You should bring him one day. I want to meet him."
Maya let out a small breath, then nodded. "I will."
They spent more time talking after that, about school, about simple plans, about things that made the moment feel normal again. It was not a heavy conversation, but it meant more than words could explain.
When it was time to leave, Maya stood up slowly. Her mother reached out and held her hand again.
"I'm proud of you," she said.
Maya paused for a moment, her expression softening. Then she smiled slightly and said, "Thank you, mum. I will come again."
Her mother nodded, satisfied.
Maya turned and walked out of the room.
When she stepped outside, she paused briefly, her thoughts settling for a moment before she continued walking. Everything felt a little lighter than before, but at the same time, she knew things were about to change again.
Later that evening, when she returned to the house, she found Caspian in the living area. He was seated, going through something on his tablet, just as usual. Maya walked in quietly, and he looked up briefly as she approached.
"I went to see my mum," she said.
"How is she?" he asked.
"She's better."
Caspian gave a small nod, then after a short pause, he said, "We'll be visiting my grandfather this weekend."
Maya looked at him, listening.
"He wants to meet you," he added. "It won't take long. We'll go, stay for a while, then leave."
Maya nodded slowly, taking in his words.
"You don't need to talk too much," Caspian continued. "Just stay close. I'll handle everything."
Maya understood what he meant.
"Alright," she said.
There was a brief silence before she spoke again. "My mum wants to meet you."
Caspian looked at her.
"She asked about you," Maya added. "She wants to see you."
For a moment, he did not respond.
Then he said, "We'll go."
Maya blinked slightly, not expecting the answer to come so easily.
"After the weekend," he added.
Maya nodded. "Okay."
Caspian returned his attention to what he was doing, but his words stayed with her.
Everything was moving forward.
The visit to his grandfather.
The meeting with her mother.
Two different worlds.
And she was standing between them.
What she did not know yet was that once she stepped into his family house, things would not remain quiet or simple anymore.
Because not everyone would welcome her.
And not everyone would stay silent.
