Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Shadows at the Gate

The sanctuary's gates groaned under the morning wind, the stones around them still damp with dew. Kael stood atop the parapet, fingers brushing the wrapped Ember Core at his side. Something pulsed beneath the cloth—not urgent, but insistent.

"Kael," Lira called softly, stepping beside him. Her eyes followed the horizon. "Do you feel it too?"

He nodded. "Something's… off. Not just the usual patrols. It's the flame. It's different—watching."

A runner arrived from the forest outskirts, breathless and covered in ash. "Scouts report… burned ruins near the northern ridge. The fire… it's unnatural. Not from weather or wildfires."

Kael's pulse quickened. Riven appeared at the other edge of the wall, leaning casually—but his eyes were sharp. "Interesting," he said. "Seems like even the forest recognizes talent… and danger."

Kael ignored the jab, exchanging a silent look with Lira. No words were needed—their bond had learned to speak through glances. They would investigate together. The Ember Core thrummed in agreement, as if sensing the first real threat to come.
