Chapter 24 - Into The Shadow Forest

## **Chapter 24: Into the Shadow Forest**

**The Edge of the Forbidden Zone – Midnight**

The **Shadow Forest** did not welcome visitors. It waited for them.

As Chen Feng and his team crossed the boundary line marked by ancient, crumbling stone pillars, the air changed instantly. The vibrant spiritual energy of the empire vanished, replaced by a thick, suffocating fog that tasted of ash and old blood. The trees here were not green; they were twisted black skeletons, their branches clawing at the sky like desperate hands. No birds sang. No insects chirped. The only sound was the wind howling through hollow trunks, sounding eerily like human whispers.

*"Turn back..."*

*"Death awaits..."*

*"Your bones will feed the roots..."*

"Ignore it," Chen Feng commanded, his voice cutting through the psychological noise. "It's a mental formation designed to break weak minds. Keep your spiritual energy focused on your dantian."

Behind him, the team tightened their formation.

Lin Yue's staff glowed with a soft silver light, creating a small bubble of purity that pushed the fog back slightly. Kael had blue flames dancing on his shoulders, providing warmth against the unnatural chill. Sera moved silently, her sword drawn, eyes scanning every shadow. Yan Lie brought up the rear, his fire spear ready, his expression grim.

"How far to the Tomb of Silence?" Sera asked, her voice low.

Chen Feng closed his eyes, activating his **Void Sense**. He wasn't looking with his eyes; he was feeling the distortions in space caused by the powerful arrays hidden in the forest.

"The tomb is at the heart of the forest," he said, opening his eyes which now glowed with a faint purple hue. "About fifty miles in. But distance is irrelevant here. Space is... folded."

"Folded?" Yan Lie frowned. "You mean we could walk for days and end up in the same spot?"

"Precisely," Chen Feng nodded. "This is a **Spatial Labyrinth**. Created by the Assassin Sovereign himself ten thousand years ago. Most who enter wander until they starve or are eaten by the beasts lurking in the fog."

He stopped and turned to face a dense thicket of black thorns that seemed to block their path.

"But I know the shortcut."

He raised his hand, forming a seal.

"**Void Step: Spatial Tear.**"

He slashed the air horizontally.

*RIIIP.*

The fabric of reality tore open, revealing a swirling vortex of dark energy behind it. Through the tear, they could see a completely different landscape—a barren wasteland under a blood-red moon, with a massive, jagged pyramid looming in the distance.

"The Tomb," Chen Feng said. "Step through. Quickly. The tear won't stay open long."

One by one, they jumped through the rift.

---

**Inside the Labyrinth – The Wasteland**

The moment they landed, the ground shook.

They were no longer in the forest. They stood on cracked, dry earth that stretched endlessly toward the red horizon. The air here was thin and hot, smelling of sulfur.

And they were not alone.

From the cracks in the ground, hundreds of figures began to rise. They were not alive. They were **Shadow Corpses**—reanimated warriors clad in tattered ancient armor, their eyes glowing with green ghost-fire. They held rusted spears and broken shields, but their aura was terrifyingly strong. Each one radiated the power of a *Foundation Establishment* cultivator, and there were hundreds of them.

"Ambush!" Kael shouted, launching a wave of blue fire.

The fire washed over the corpses, burning some, but others simply walked through the flames, unharmed.

"Physical attacks won't work well!" Sera cried, slashing a corpse in half, only for the two halves to crawl back together. "They regenerate!"

"They are bound by soul chains," Lin Yue observed, her eyes widening as she sensed the dark magic holding them together. "You have to destroy the soul anchor, not the body!"

"Then leave them to me," Chen Feng said calmly.

He stepped forward, placing his palms on the ground.

"**Void Scripture: Soul Severance.**"

A pulse of invisible black energy rippled out from his hands, passing through the ground and into the army of corpses.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then, simultaneously, the green fire in the eyes of every single corpse flickered and died.

The hundreds of reanimated warriors collapsed into piles of dust and rusted metal. Silent. Still. Dead for the second time.

"Incredible," Yan Lie whispered, staring at the field of dust. "He didn't even move. Just... erased them all."

"Don't get comfortable," Chen Feng warned, looking toward the distant pyramid. "That was just the greeting party. The real defenses are ahead."

As they began to march toward the pyramid, the ground beneath them started to shift. Massive stone statues, each resembling a hooded assassin, rose from the earth, blocking their path. These were not corpses; they were **Golem Guardians**, infused with high-level formation arrays.

The largest golem, standing thirty feet tall, spoke with a grinding voice:

"**Identify yourselves. Only those bearing the Mark of the Moon may pass.**"

Chen Feng smirked.

"We don't have a mark," he said. "But we have something better."

He reached into his spatial ring and pulled out the severed head of the Shadow Moon representative they had captured earlier (preserved in ice). He tossed it at the golem's feet.

"Does this count as an invitation?"

The golem's eyes flashed red. It scanned the head, recognizing the spiritual signature of a high-ranking clan member.

"**Authentication confirmed. Welcome, honored guests. The Master awaits in the Inner Sanctum.**"

The stone giants stepped aside, clearing a wide path directly to the pyramid's entrance.

"Psychological warfare," Chen Feng muttered to his team as they walked past the statues. "They think we killed our own ally to gain entry. Let them believe we are monsters. Fear makes them sloppy."

"They definitely think we're monsters now," Kael chuckled nervously.

---

**The Inner Sanctum – The Throne Room**

The entrance to the pyramid opened into a vast chamber lit by thousands of floating green candles. In the center, on a throne made of human skulls and obsidian, sat a figure.

He wore robes that seemed to be made of living shadows, constantly shifting and writhing. His face was hidden behind a mask of pure white bone, with no eye sockets, yet they could feel his gaze piercing through their souls.

This was **General Vex**, the right hand of the Assassin Sovereign. A *Nascent Soul Level 8* cultivator. One step away from becoming a Spirit King.

"So," General Vex's voice echoed without him moving his lips, sounding like it came from everywhere at once. "The little Void rat finally arrives. And he brings friends. How... touching."

Chen Feng stopped ten paces from the throne. His team fanned out behind him, ready for battle.

"Vex," Chen Feng said coldly. "Where is your master? I didn't come to chat with a servant."

Vex laughed, a sound like breaking glass.

"My Master is beyond your reach, boy. He is weaving the final threads of the Great Awakening. But do not worry. I am more than enough to send you to the afterlife."

He stood up, and the shadows in the room surged toward him, forming a massive cloak of darkness that swallowed the light from the candles.

"You destroyed my subordinates. You killed my niece, Lady Frost. You humiliated the Shadow Moon Sect in the capital. Tonight, I will collect the debt."

"**Shadow Realm: Absolute Darkness.**"

Suddenly, the light vanished. Total, crushing darkness enveloped them. It wasn't just lack of light; it was a physical weight that suppressed their spiritual energy. Chen Feng felt his cultivation drop by 30%. Lin Yue's starlight was dimmed to a faint glow.

"I can't see!" Kael panicked.

"Stay close!" Sera's voice came from the left.

"Something is moving!" Yan Lie shouted.

*Swoosh!*

A blade sliced through the air, missing Chen Feng's neck by an inch.

*Swoosh! Swoosh!*

More attacks came from all directions, invisible strikes from an invisible enemy.

"He's using the darkness to hide his movements," Chen Feng realized. "In this realm, he is omnipresent."

"Can you break it?" Lin Yue asked, her voice trembling as she deflected a blind strike with her staff.

"Not break it," Chen Feng said, a dangerous idea forming in his mind. "I'm going to eat it."

He closed his eyes, ignoring the physical senses. He reached out with his **Void Flame**, searching for the source of the darkness.

*There.*

A core of dense shadow energy hovering above Vex's head, powering the domain.

"**Void Devour: Domain Consumption.**"

Chen Feng opened his mouth and inhaled deeply.

A vortex of black fire erupted from his body, spinning violently. It didn't attack Vex; it attacked the *darkness itself*.

The oppressive shadows began to swirl toward Chen Feng, sucked into his vortex like water down a drain.

"What?!" Vex's voice shrieked, losing its calm composure for the first time. "You're eating my technique?! Impossible! That requires a cultivation level far beyond yours!"

"Nothing is impossible for the Void," Chen Feng growled, his body glowing brighter as he absorbed the dark energy. The suppression lifted. His cultivation surged back, then spiked higher. *Nascent Soul Level 1... Level 2...*

The light returned to the chamber, blindingly bright.

Vex stood exposed, his shadow cloak gone, his mask cracked. He looked terrified.

"You... you monster! What are you?!"

Chen Feng opened his eyes. They were now entirely black, with no whites, burning with purple fire.

"I am your executioner."

He vanished.

**Void Teleportation.**

He reappeared directly in front of Vex, his hand already extended toward the general's chest.

"**Void Palm: Heart Stop.**"

Vex tried to dodge, but Chen Feng was faster than thought. His palm slammed into Vex's chest.

*BOOM.*

A shockwave exploded outward, shattering the skull throne and blowing out the walls of the pyramid.

Vex flew backward, crashing into the far wall. He slid down, coughing up black blood. His chest was caved in, his heart shattered.

"It... it's not over..." Vex wheezed, his life fading. "The ritual... it's already done. The Assassin Sovereign... he has awakened. He is coming for *you*."

Chen Feng walked over and loomed above the dying general.

"Let him come," he said softly. "I'll be waiting."

He placed his hand on Vex's forehead one last time.

"**Soul Extract.**"

Vex's soul was ripped from his body, screaming, before being devoured by the Void Flame. His cultivation, his memories, his secrets—all added to Chen Feng's power.

**[System Notification]**

**[Enemy Defeated: General Vex (Nascent Soul Level 8)]**

**[Reward: 5000 Void Points]**

**[Cultivation Breakthrough: Nascent Soul Level 3 Achieved!]**

**[New Ability Unlocked: 'Void Avatar' (Create a clone of pure void energy)]**

Chen Feng stood up, his aura exploding outward, shaking the entire pyramid. He was no longer just a talented junior. He was a powerhouse capable of shaking continents.

"Master!" Yan Lie ran over, awe-struck. "You... you reached Nascent Soul! In seconds!"

"The energy here was rich," Chen Feng said casually, though his mind was racing. *The ritual is done. The Assassin Sovereign has awakened.*

He looked at the northern wall of the chamber, where a massive portal had opened, swirling with chaotic storm energy.

"That leads to his location," Chen Feng pointed. "The **Realm of Eternal Night**. Where the Sovereigns gather."

Lin Yue stepped beside him, placing a hand on his arm. "Are you ready? If he's fully awakened..."

"I've been ready for ten thousand years," Chen Feng said, gripping her hand tightly. "Team, form up. We're going to finish this."

He looked at his friends, his allies, his family.

"This is the point of no return. Once we step through that portal, there's no going back to the academy, to the empire, to normal life. We either kill the Sovereigns, or we die trying."

Kael grinned, lighting a cigarette with his finger flame. "Normal life was boring anyway."

Sera nodded, checking her blade. "I live for the fight."

Yan Lie bowed. "My soul is yours. Wherever you go."

Lin Yue smiled, her eyes shining with unwavering trust. "We face destiny together."

Chen Feng smiled, a genuine, fierce smile.

"Then let's go kill a god."

He stepped into the portal.

His team followed without hesitation.

Behind them, the pyramid crumbled into dust.

Ahead lay the final battlefield.

The war for the world had begun.
