Chapter 21 - “ No One left ”

They didn't leave immediately.

Even after stepping out of the structure, no one moved away from it. The fight had ended, but the mission hadn't. That much was clear now, more than before.

They had fought.

They had observed.

But they hadn't done what they came here to do.

Taro was the one who said it.

"…we didn't check."

No one asked what he meant.

Because they all knew.

Aiko's voice came out quieter than usual.

"…survivors."

That word settled heavily.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then Ren exhaled slowly.

"…we search."

Daisuke didn't argue.

"…stay close."

They didn't go back into the structure first.

They moved outward.

The surrounding area stretched wider than it first seemed. Smaller buildings, storage units, broken pathways connecting one section to another. It wasn't a village, not fully—but it wasn't just a checkpoint either.

It was used.

Lived in.

Or it had been.

The first building they checked was empty.

Not destroyed.

Just… left.

The door was open, slightly off its hinge. Inside, things were still in place. Containers, tools, a half-packed crate sitting near the wall like someone had been in the middle of something.

Taro stepped inside.

Looked around.

"…no one."

Ren checked the corners.

Nothing.

Mei didn't stay long.

"…next."

They moved.

Second building.

Same.

Third.

Different.

The door was broken this time, not opened. The wood splintered inward, pieces scattered across the ground. Inside, things weren't as neat. Objects knocked over. Marks along the wall.

Signs of movement.

Not clean.

Aiko stepped in slowly.

"…someone was here."

Ren nodded.

"…not anymore."

There was no blood.

That made it worse.

Taro frowned.

"…where do people go without leaving anything behind?"

No one answered.

Because there wasn't an easy answer.

They kept moving.

Building after building.

Room after room.

Nothing.

Not a body.

Not a voice.

Not even a trace of someone hiding.

The silence didn't feel empty anymore.

It felt—

cleared.

Ryo stopped near one of the outer paths.

Something caught his attention.

On the ground—

marks.

Not the carved ones.

Different.

Dragged.

Faint.

But there.

Ren noticed him stop.

"…what is it?"

Ryo pointed slightly.

"…this."

They all looked.

The line wasn't straight. It shifted slightly, uneven, like something had been pulled rather than moved properly. It wasn't deep, but it repeated, again and again, leading further out.

Mei crouched.

"…this wasn't random."

Aiko's voice dropped.

"…someone was taken?"

Silence.

Taro didn't like that answer.

"…or they ran."

Ren shook his head.

"…no."

He pointed ahead.

"…it doesn't split."

That mattered.

If people ran—

they scatter.

This didn't.

It led.

One direction.

Daisuke stepped forward slightly.

"…we follow."

Not far.

Just enough.

They didn't go deep.

They knew better now.

The path extended toward a narrower section between structures, where the space tightened and visibility dropped. The air felt different again, not heavier like before—but more closed.

Taro lowered his voice.

"…this feels worse."

No one disagreed.

They moved slowly.

Carefully.

Then—

they found it.

Not a person.

Something left behind.

A piece of cloth.

Torn.

Caught against the edge of broken metal.

Aiko stepped closer.

"…this is from a uniform."

Ren looked at it.

Recognized it.

"…guardian."

That word hit differently now.

Taro's expression shifted.

"…so they were here."

Mei didn't look away.

"…they tried to resist."

There were more marks nearby.

Deeper ones.

Not from movement.

From struggle.

But again—

No blood.

No bodies.

Nothing final.

That made it worse.

Ryo looked ahead again.

The path continued.

But something in him told him—

not now.

Daisuke turned first.

"…we don't go further."

No one argued.

Because they all felt it.

They weren't ready.

Or maybe—

this wasn't the place to push yet.

They went back.

Slowly.

The buildings felt different now.

Not just empty.

Wrong.

Taro spoke again as they regrouped near the structure.

"…there's no one here."

No one corrected him.

Because it was true.

But Ren added quietly—

"…there was."

Silence.

Aiko looked down slightly.

"…they didn't leave."

That was the part no one wanted to say.

Mei finished it anyway.

"…they were taken."

No one denied it.

Because now—

it made sense.

The marks.

The order.

The lack of chaos.

This wasn't destruction.

It was removal.

Ryo looked back toward the structure one last time.

Then toward the path they didn't follow.

Everything pointed somewhere.

But they still didn't know where.

Daisuke spoke.

"…we report this."

Simple.

Direct.

But heavier than before.

Because this time—

they weren't reporting an attack.

They were reporting—

absence.

And as they began to leave, the silence followed them again.

But now—

it had meaning.

Not empty.

Not quiet.

Controlled.

Like something had passed through—

and taken everything with it.
