Chapter 10 - 10

The corridor outside Mia's room grew quiet again once the door closed.

Marianne remained there for a moment, listening.

Inside, the faint sound of movement. The slow rhythm of someone exploring a new space.

Good.

That meant Mia still had enough strength to stay awake.

Marianne turned and walked back down the corridor.

The Sanctuary at night had its own rhythm. Soft lights, distant footsteps, the quiet murmur of ventilation and distant water moving somewhere inside the walls.

As she crossed the open atrium again, she noticed someone standing near the railing.

Aster Roth.

Of course.

He was leaning lightly against the stone, looking out toward the forest as if he had been waiting there for quite some time.

Which, knowing Aster, he probably had.

Marianne approached.

"You let her go to the room alone," he said without turning.

"She needed space."

"And you trust that none of her internal parliament will decide to redecorate the building tonight?"

Marianne crossed her arms.

"If they do, I assume you'll write a philosophical essay about it."

Aster smiled faintly.

"Possibly."

He finally turned toward her.

"Well?"

Marianne exhaled slowly.

"Physically she'll recover."

"And mentally?"

Marianne hesitated.

"That's… more complicated."

They walked slowly toward the center of the atrium.

A small stream crossed the stone floor, water flowing quietly between polished rocks.

Marianne continued.

"Her neurological scans confirm what you felt."

Aster nodded once.

"A system."

"Yes."

"How many?"

Marianne shook her head.

"Hard to say. At least five distinct patterns so far. Possibly more."

Aster considered this with calm curiosity.

"And the one Ludwig encountered?"

Marianne looked at him.

"Sharp. Controlled. Fully aware."

"Lilith," Aster said quietly.

Marianne raised an eyebrow.

"You already named her."

Aster shrugged lightly.

"Names help conversations."

They stood in silence for a moment.

Outside the tall windows the forest moved slowly in the night wind.

Finally Marianne spoke again.

"You expected someone from Triple-E to reach us eventually."

Aster's expression remained thoughtful.

"Yes."

"But not her."

"No."

Marianne studied him.

"You're not surprised."

Aster chuckled softly.

"My dear Marianne, surprise is simply information arriving faster than expected."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning the system inside her reached the same conclusion we did."

Marianne frowned slightly.

"That Triple-E is killing her."

"That survival required relocation."

He gestured lightly toward the forest outside.

"And that the Sanctuary is currently the only place on the continent where such a relocation could succeed."

Marianne looked back toward the corridor leading to Mia's room.

"She doesn't remember how she found us."

"Of course not."

"You're not worried about that?"

"Not particularly."

Aster turned and leaned lightly against the railing.

"Odin."

"Yes, Aster."

"Any unusual activity on external networks?"

"Triple-E internal communications show increased encrypted traffic."

Marianne sighed quietly.

"They've noticed."

Aster nodded.

"They always do."

"Which means they'll come."

"Eventually."

Marianne looked at him carefully.

"And that doesn't bother you?"

Aster's eyes returned to the dark forest beyond the glass.

On the surface he looked calm.

Almost amused.

"Marianne," he said softly.

"If Triple-E had simply sent soldiers…"

"That would have been a problem."

"But they didn't."

He turned back toward her.

"They sent Mia."

A small pause.

"And that," he finished, "is infinitely more interesting."

Marianne studied him for a moment.

"You're planning something."

Aster smiled faintly.

"I'm always planning something."

Behind them, unseen by both of them, one of the Sanctuary cameras adjusted its focus.

Odin watched quietly.

And somewhere down the corridor—

in a small room facing the forest—

Mia Valen sat on the edge of her bed.

Listening to voices that had finally found a place to speak.
