Chapter 6 - Decoy Protocol

The Med-Bay had essentially been converted into an unauthorized command center. Lexi sat cross-legged at the foot of Alex's hospital bed, a glowing datapad balanced on her knees. Her suspension meant she couldn't wear the Assault armor in the field, but it didn't mean she couldn't run tactical.

"Alright, Stan, you're approaching the junction beneath Sector 4," Lexi said, her eyes tracking three blinking green dots on the schematic. "Heat signatures are spiking about two hundred yards down the north tunnel."

"Copy that," Stan's voice crackled over the open comms channel on the bedside monitor. "Smells like ozone and melted copper down here. Cyril, what do your Avian optics see?"

"Nothing but shadows and bad decisions," Cyril muttered over the radio. "It's pitch black, and Emma's splashing in the drainage water is ruining my focus."

"I'm an Aquatic!" Emma snapped back, her voice echoing through the comms. "I need the moisture, Cyril! Do you want me to dry out and turn into a giant tactical raisin?"

In the Med-Bay, Alex chuckled, shaking his head against the pillows. "Focus, guys. If Blackout absorbed that much raw grid energy from the East of Aegis City, his cybernetics are going to be glowing. You'll see him before he sees you."

"Understood, Vanguard," Stan replied, his tone shifting to pure professionalism. "Going silent. We're moving in on the heat source."

The Med-Bay plunged into quiet as the field team went stealth. The only sounds were the steady hum of the heart monitor and the soft tapping of Lexi's fingers on the datapad.

Alex watched her for a moment as she worked. The harsh, fluorescent lights of the Med-Bay caught the subtle Reptilian scales along her jawline. The tension of the last three years was completely gone from her shoulders. She looked peaceful, even while coordinating a subterranean manhunt.

"You're a natural at Overwatch," Alex murmured softly, reaching out with his uninjured arm to gently trace the back of her hand.

Lexi looked up from the screen, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips. She set the datapad aside and shifted closer, her fingers intertwining with his. "I prefer the field. But... I don't mind the company up here."

Alex's amber eyes softened. The adrenaline of the briefing had faded, leaving only that heavy, magnetic pull between them again. He tugged her hand gently, pulling her closer to the edge of the bed. "I'm glad you're suspended," he whispered, his voice dropping an octave.

Lexi raised an eyebrow, a teasing smirk on her face. "Oh really? The legendary Vanguard likes breaking the rules?"

"Only if it means you stay right here," Alex replied smoothly.

Lexi let out a soft, breathless laugh. She leaned down, closing the distance between them. It started slow—a gentle, sweet kiss that quickly deepened as Alex's hand slid into her hair, pulling her against him. For a few perfect seconds, the world disappeared, the danger of Blackout entirely forgotten in the quiet isolation of the medical wing.

"Ewwwww."

The loud, disgusted groan blasted out of the bedside comms speaker at maximum volume.

Alex and Lexi froze, their lips barely an inch apart.

"Seriously?" Stan's booming, unmistakable laughter echoed through the sterile Med-Bay. "Get a room, guys!"

Lexi's face instantly burned a shade of crimson that rivaled a flare gun. She scrambled backward so fast she nearly tipped off the edge of the bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. Alex's eyes went wide with pure, unfiltered horror.

"We..." Alex whispered to Lexi, his voice cracking slightly. "We forgot to turn off the comms, didn't we?"

"No, you didn't," Cyril's voice deadpanned through the speaker, dripping with absolute, weaponized sarcasm. "We heard absolutely nothing. Truly. The tactical silence was deafening."

Emma completely lost it on the other end, her breathless laughter mixing with the splashing of tunnel water. "Oh my god, 'I'm glad you're suspended,'" she mimicked, pitching her voice low to imitate Alex. "So smooth, Vanguard! Should we head back so you two can finish your—"

Emma's joke was violently cut off.

It wasn't by static. It was by a deafening, bone-rattling siren.

The alarm wasn't coming from the comms. It was blaring inside the Leo Corp base.

The Med-Bay was instantly bathed in the harsh, strobing red light of a Level-One Breach alarm. Lexi snatched the datapad, her embarrassment vanishing in a split second, replaced by pure combat focus. Her fingers flew across the screen as she pulled up the base's internal security feed.

"Alex..." Lexi breathed quietly, her green eyes widening in horror as she processed the data. "The subway... the heat signatures. They were a fake. A thermal dump."

"Where is he?" Alex demanded, throwing the hospital blanket off his legs.

"Loading Bay 4. Right beneath us," Lexi said, typing furiously to lock down the adjacent corridors. "He didn't hit a supply depot. He followed one of our armored transports inside. He's trying to steal a Class-A Bio-Synthetic Battery Core to stabilize the Aegis City power he stole!"

Alex didn't hesitate. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up.

He braced himself for the blinding agony of his shattered ribs. He waited for his lungs to seize and his vision to blur.

Nothing happened.

No pain. No crack of bone. The damage was simply... gone.

Alex blinked, pressing a hand firmly against his chest. He took a slow breath. Then another. The bones felt completely solid. The deep, agonizing ache had vanished entirely.

Lexi stared at him, her jaw dropping. "Alex... your ribs. How?"

"I don't know," Alex said, flexing his shoulders, the sheer impossibility of his accelerated Feline healing hitting him like a physical blow. He had never recovered this fast. Not even close. "We'll figure it out later."

He looked at Lexi. His shattered ribs were somehow completely healed, but they were still technically benched. Lexi was officially suspended, locked out of the active roster by direct order.

"Stan, Cyril, Emma, get back here now! Base is breached!" Alex barked into the comms, slamming his hand on the console to finally mute the open channel.

He turned to Lexi, the harsh red strobe of the breach alarm reflecting in his amber, Feline eyes. The predatory, Natural light was fully awake now.

"Your suspension strictly forbids activating your combat tech on the battlefield, not on Leo Corps grounds," Alex stated, his voice deadly serious but carrying a faint, rebellious edge.

Lexi just smirked, a fierce, adrenaline-fueled grin spreading across her face. "Good thing I stopped caring about rules years ago."

She closed her eyes and tapped the bio-metric trigger at her wrist. Instantly, a dark, liquid-like metallic substance seeped from the micro-pores of her skin. The nanotechnology rippled upward, expanding and locking into place with a sharp, mechanized hiss. Within seconds, the sleek, heavily reinforced plating of her Assault armor materialized over her clothes, the visor of her helmet snapping down with a lethal click.

Alex didn't hesitate. He triggered his own neural-link. The Vanguard armor cascaded over his medical scrubs in a wave of matte black and red nanotech, the heavy, shock-absorbent plating locking perfectly over his newly healed chest.

Fully armed and armored in the middle of the Med-Bay, the Vanguard and Assault were back online.

"Let's take this guy down," Alex said, his voice now amplified and deepened by the suit's vocal processors.

Lexi cracked her armored knuckles, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

"Together."

They didn't wait for the elevators. Alex and Lexi bypassed the main corridors, sprinting down the emergency stairwell with terrifying speed, their armored boots slamming against the reinforced steel grates. The Level-One Breach alarm wailed endlessly, painting the stairwell in flashing crimson light.

Loading Bay 4 was massive, a cavernous underground vault that smelled heavily of ozone and scorched metal. As Alex and Lexi kicked the heavy security doors open, the raw, unfiltered electricity hit them like a physical wall.

In the center of the bay sat the Leo Corp armored transport. It was a six-wheeled behemoth designed to survive a direct missile strike.

Blackout was treating it like a tin can.

The Level Seven Outlier stood beside it, a towering mass of heavy, unstable cybernetics. Searing, violent arcs of stolen blue grid-energy violently sparked off his metallic plating. He didn't have the bio-synthetic core yet. He was currently using his bare hands—superheated by the unstable energy—to literally melt and peel back the transport's foot-thick titanium rear doors.

Alex and Lexi attacked without warning.

Lexi's Assault armor flared to life. Twin plasma thrusters ignited at her shoulder blades and calves, emitting a blinding, white-hot glow. Without a second of hesitation, she launched herself across the massive loading bay like a fired missile.

She hit him with the force of a freight train.

Leading with a plasma-charged knee strike, Lexi slammed directly into the center of Blackout's chest plate. The kinetic impact was deafening. The massive Level Seven Outlier was blasted clean off his feet, his superheated grip tearing the heavy titanium doors entirely off their hinges as he was sent skidding backward across the concrete floor.

He crashed into a stack of reinforced shipping crates, shattering them into splintered debris.

But Blackout surged back to his feet instantly. His optics flared a blinding blue, and he thrust both hands forward, unleashing a massive, uncontrolled torrent of raw Aegis City electricity straight at Lexi.

Lexi didn't retreat. She planted her boots, raising her gauntlets as a shimmering, localized plasma-shield projected from her forearms, absorbing the blast while sliding backward.

Alex moved.

Using Lexi as cover, he utilized his Feline speed, his armor blurring as he vaulted directly over Lexi's shoulders. He phased right through the dispersing electrical arcs and landed squarely in Blackout's personal space.

The cyborg reacted faster than expected. With a distorted, mechanical roar, Blackout swung a massive, electrified fist straight at Alex's head.

The punch came dangerously close.

Alex ducked at the last possible moment. The metal knuckles screamed past his ear and smashed into the floor with a thunderous crack. Concrete exploded upward. Electricity surged from the shattered ground, scorching the air inches from Alex's chest.

Too close.

Alex twisted inside Blackout's reach, pivoting sharply. The armor plating on his right gauntlet shifted, a concentrated blade of superheated plasma igniting from the wrist.

He drove the plasma blade directly into the joint of Blackout's swinging arm. Hydraulic cables severed instantly.

Blackout roared in static-laced pain as the arm dropped uselessly to his side. He tried to unleash a massive energy burst to clear the area.

"Lexi, now!" Alex shouted, backflipping perfectly out of the blast radius.

Lexi dropped her shield, her suit's weapon systems already redlining. Her forearms aggressively reconfigured into twin, heavy-bore plasma cannons.

"Eat this, you oversized battery," Lexi snarled through her comms.

She fired.

Twin beams of concentrated, searing plasma tore through the loading bay and slammed perfectly into Blackout's overloaded chest cavity.

The colliding energies created a violent shockwave. The stolen Aegis City electricity short-circuited against Lexi's plasma fire. With a deafening crack that shattered the overhead lights, electricity exploded outward, and Blackout's core processors blew out entirely.

When the smoke cleared, the towering cyborg collapsed face-first onto the concrete.

Silent. Defeated.

The loading bay fell eerily quiet, save for the wailing red breach alarm and the hiss of cooling plasma venting from Lexi's gauntlets.

Alex stood up straight, his dark armor gleaming in the emergency lights. He looked at the smoking wreckage of the Level Seven Outlier, and then over at Lexi.

She retracted her plasma cannons, letting out a long, satisfied exhale, and gave Alex a sharp, triumphant nod.

Perfectly synced.

The heavy reinforced doors at the far end of the loading bay violently burst open.

Stan charged into the room first, his massive Arthropod frame vibrating with adrenaline, his heavy particle-cannon raised. Cyril slid in right behind him, scanning for threats. Emma rushed in behind them, water-whips ready to flood the room.

Then, they stopped dead in their tracks.

Blackout was already down.

Stan blinked, lowering his weapon as he stared at the massive, short-circuited chassis, and then at Alex and Lexi.

"You've gotta be kidding me," Stan deadpanned. He let out a heavy breath. "We just sprinted up forty flights of maintenance stairs for this?"

Emma folded her arms, looking deeply offended as she stepped over a piece of melted titanium.

"So let me get this straight," Emma said, her teal eyes narrowing. "You send us into a damp, disgusting sewer with a fake heat signature, forget to mute your comms while making out, and then you steal the boss fight?" She shook her head in dramatic disbelief. "Unbelievable. I'm filing a grievance with Leo."

Lexi's visor retracted into her collar with a sleek mechanical hiss, revealing a smug, unapologetic smirk.

"You were too slow, Emma."

Later, the team sat in the Sector 1 Conference Room. The adrenaline had completely faded.

The nanotech suits were deactivated. The team sat around the sleek, obsidian glass table in their standard, dark Leo Corp undersuits. Mr. Leo stood at the head of the table, his demeanor calculating as he reviewed the security footage on the holographic projector.

"Suspension," Mr. Leo began, his voice calm, smooth, and utterly authoritative. "A temporary removal from active duty. Usually enforced to prevent unnecessary casualties or collateral damage." He paused, looking directly at Lexi. "Apparently, the Assault division defines that differently."

Lexi didn't flinch. She sat up straight, meeting her boss's gaze. "With all due respect, sir, the base was breached. I acted."

Leo shifted his piercing attention to Alex. "The medical droids logged three shattered ribs and internal hemorrhaging less than twenty-four hours ago. Yet you were performing aerial combat today."

Alex leaned back in his chair. "I healed," he replied simply.

Leo studied him for a long, careful moment. "Clearly," he finally said, tapping the console to dismiss the glowing hologram.

He folded his hands behind his back and began to pace slowly. "You destroyed a titanium transport door, melted company equipment, and disabled the primary lighting grid in Loading Bay 4."

The team remained completely silent.

"However," Leo continued, his tone shifting. "You also stopped a Level Seven Outlier from absorbing a Class-A Bio-Synthetic Battery Core."

He paused, leaning forward and placing both hands flat on the obsidian glass. "If Blackout had managed to integrate that core with the Aegis City energy he stole... this facility would no longer exist. Neither would half the city block above us."

The room fell completely silent. The reality of how close they had come to a total wipeout settled heavily over the squad.

Leo straightened up, a rare display of exhaustion slipping through his stoic facade. "Your suspension is lifted, Lexi." He looked around the table, his eyes locking onto each of his Titronz. "Because Blackout wasn't acting alone. Outliers don't organize subterranean thermal decoys like that. Someone guided him here."

His voice dropped, cold and sharp.

"Someone is testing our defenses."

Leo folded his hands behind his back again.

"Get some rest, team. The real hunt starts tomorrow. Dismissed."
