Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — Rule Rewrite

The moment Amara confirmed her selection, the world snapped.

Not forward.

Not backward.

But sideways.

Like reality had tried to restart and failed halfway.

TIME RESUMPTION

The frozen rail district jolted violently back into motion. Sound slammed into the air metal screaming, brakes grinding, shouts of confusion. People mid-motion continued movements they didn't even realize were paused. But something felt…off.

Amara sensed it immediately. The system hadn't restarted cleanly. It was unstable.

Above her, the Watchers moved but not smoothly.

Their geometric structures flickered like corrupted files attempting to load.

The air itself seemed charged with tension, small distortions rippling outward.

Amara stood still, phone in hand, heart steady.

Then it vibrated violently.

RULE BREAK EXECUTED

"…it worked," she murmured, eyes narrowing.

A second line appeared on the screen.

SYSTEM RESPONSE DELAYED

"…delayed?"

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Watchers normally responded instantly.

Correction threads didn't lag.

But now, hesitation hung in the air like static electricity.

Above her, one Watcher fragment flickered, its geometric form twisting slightly. Something inside its structure had been rewritten. Amara's lips curved into a small, sharp smile.

"…what did I change?"

RULE ALTERATION EFFECT CONFIRMED

The system expanded a new interface:

RULE MODIFICATION RESULT

ORIGINAL RULE: WATCHER FRAGMENTS HAVE FULL CORRECTION AUTHORITY

NEW RULE: CORRECTION AUTHORITY IS TEMPORARILY DIVIDED DURING ACTIVE INTERVENTION EVENTS

Amara blinked. "…I split their authority."

YES.

Silence followed. For the first time since the Watchers appeared, they weren't fully in control.

Her mind raced. "…so now they can interfere with each other."

INTERNAL CONFLICT POSSIBILITY CREATED.

She looked upward again.

One fragment attempted to stabilize the timeline.

Another tried to suppress her.

A third paused frozen, unsure of which command to follow.

"…they're desyncing."

WATCHER NETWORK COHERENCE REDUCED BY 37%

Amara exhaled slowly, feeling the first real advantage slip into her hands.

The energy core above the rail district pulsed wildly, threads of light unraveling as the Watchers' divided attention slowed their corrections. Normally, it would have been fully stabilized by now. Now? The core teetered on the edge of chaos, cracks spreading through the containment field, unstable light leaking.

People below screamed again, ducked, ran, unaware that Amara was manipulating forces far beyond comprehension.

She stepped forward not away, not hiding. Into the event zone.

WARNING: YOU ARE ENTERING ACTIVE COLLISION ZONE

"…I know," she muttered.

One Watcher fragment reacted, then the next. But authority was fractured.

They weren't unified anymore.

A black geometric correction thread fired toward the core, mid-air it stalled.

Another fragment attempted to override it but hesitated.

The internal conflict bought her precious seconds.

"…they're arguing," she said softly.

INTERNAL COMMAND CONFLICT DETECTED.

Amara's eyes sharpened. "…they can cancel each other out."

She pivoted, moving toward the system delay point the exact spot where correction authority had fractured.

RULE BREAK STABILITY WINDOW ACTIVE

She raised the phone, exhaled, and muttered, "…second rule coming."

She didn't hesitate. She understood now: the system wasn't about stopping disasters it was about controlling who had permission to stop them.

Her finger hovered…then tapped.

SECOND RULE SELECTION INITIATED

The Watchers reacted instantly all fragments locking onto her at once. Synchronized.

Too late.

"…I take priority," she said quietly.

And confirmed.

RULE REWRITE: COMPLETED

Time stuttered again, but this wasn't a freeze. It was something worse:

AUTHORITY REASSIGNMENT EVENT

The Watchers froze mid-action, geometric structures locked, then shifted.

Amara felt it a change in system hierarchy, a slice of control torn from their layers and assigned to her.

The phone vibrated, displaying one final message:

SYSTEM UPDATE

NEW RULE ACTIVE: AMARA K. HAS LIMITED PRIORITY OVERRIDE DURING ACTIVE INTERVENTION EVENTS

"…priority override," she murmured. She looked up at the Watchers—still powerful, still dangerous—but now they weren't absolute.

CONFIRMED. YOU ARE NOW A CONTESTED AUTHORITY NODE.

Amara exhaled. "…that's a funny way of saying I'm a problem."

Above, the Watchers finally stabilized. But differently. Now, they focused—not just on the event, not just on correction—but on her.

One fragment spoke directly into her mind, tone sharp, classification-focused:

YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO EXIST AT THIS LAYER.

Amara tightened her grip on the phone. "…yeah. I noticed."

The energy core behind her erupted again, light spilling in chaotic arcs. But this time, no one controlled it not the system, not the Watchers, not the timeline.

She stood at the center of it all and smiled faintly. "…now we are even
