Chapter 13 - The First Price

The door closed behind him with a quiet click.

But this time, it didn't sound small.

It sounded final.

Taye stood still for a moment in the hallway, the air around him feeling… different.

Not heavier.

Not lighter.

Just… settled.

Like something had been decided.

A few minutes ago, he had been sitting across from a woman who saw through him without effort.

Now, he was standing outside her office, no longer just a visitor.

Now, he was part of something.

That realization didn't come with excitement.

Or fear.

Just awareness.

"You handled that well."

The voice came from behind him.

Taye turned slightly.

The man from before, the one who had first brought him in, stood there, leaning casually against the wall.

Casual… but not relaxed.

Nothing about this place was relaxed.

Taye didn't respond immediately.

"I answered honestly," he said after a moment.

The man nodded.

"Most people don't," he replied. "They try to say what they think she wants to hear."

A small pause.

"You didn't."

Taye met his gaze.

"I didn't come here to impress anyone."

That earned him a faint smile.

"No," the man said quietly. "You came because you're desperate."

The word hung in the air.

Not as an insult.

As truth.

Taye didn't deny it.

"Maybe," he said.

The man straightened slightly.

"Come," he said. "Let's not stand here."

They walked again.

But this time, the path felt shorter.

More direct.

No unnecessary turns.

No long pauses.

Until they entered a different room.

This one was smaller.

Simpler.

A table.

Two chairs.

And on the table

An envelope.

Taye's eyes settled on it immediately.

"Your first assignment," the man said.

The words landed calmly.

But something about them carried weight.

Taye stepped closer.

"Already?"

The man shrugged slightly.

"You stepped in," he said. "This is what stepping in looks like."

No buildup.

No training montage.

Just action.

Taye reached for the envelope.

Paused.

Then looked at the man.

"What is it?"

The man didn't answer directly.

"Open it," he said.

Taye broke the seal.

Inside

A photograph.

A small card.

And a key.

He pulled the photograph out first.

A man.

Mid-thirties.

Neatly dressed.

Ordinary face.

Too ordinary.

The kind of person you wouldn't look at twice.

Taye flipped it over.

An address.

A time.

Next, the card.

One sentence.

Deliver the key. Say nothing else.

Taye frowned slightly.

"That's it?"

The man nodded.

"That's it."

Taye looked back at the photo.

"This man… who is he?"

The man shook his head.

"Not your concern."

"And the key?"

"Also not your concern."

Taye looked up.

"So I'm just a messenger."

The man's expression didn't change.

"For now."

Silence.

Taye looked down at the key in his hand.

Small.

Metal.

Unremarkable.

But he understood something now.

Nothing here was random.

Not the man.

Not the task.

Not even the simplicity of it.

"This is a test," Taye said quietly.

The man didn't deny it.

"All first steps are."

Taye slipped everything back into the envelope.

"When?"

The man glanced at his watch.

"Soon."

A pause.

"Don't be late."

The building felt different when he stepped outside.

Not because it had changed.

But because he had something now.

A role.

A direction.

He didn't go home.

Instead, he moved straight toward the address.

The city looked the same.

People walked.

Cars moved.

Voices filled the air.

Life continued.

Unaware.

Taye walked through it all without really seeing it.

His mind focused.

Sharp.

He reached the location earlier than expected.

A residential building.

Simple.

Quiet.

Nothing about it stood out.

He didn't go in immediately.

Instead, he stood across the street.

Watching.

The same way he had learned.

Observing patterns.

Movement.

Stillness.

A woman passed by.

Entered.

Left minutes later.

A man came out.

Locked the door.

Walked away.

Nothing unusual.

And that… made it feel more unusual.

Taye crossed the street.

Each step measured.

Controlled.

He reached the door.

Paused.

Looked at the key.

This was it.

His first real step.

He knocked.

Once.

Waited.

Footsteps inside.

Then

The door opened.

The man from the photo stood there.

Same face.

Same calm expression.

But up close…

There was tension.

Subtle.

But real.

They looked at each other for a moment.

Then Taye spoke.

"Delivery."

The man's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

He stepped aside.

"Come in."

Taye entered.

The room was neat.

Organized.

But the air felt tight.

The man closed the door behind him.

Locked it.

Turned.

"Do you have it?" he asked.

Taye didn't respond.

He simply held out the key.

The man stared at it.

Too long.

Then took it.

His fingers trembled.

Just slightly.

Taye noticed.

"Where did you get this?" the man asked.

Taye said nothing.

The man let out a small breath.

"Of course…" he muttered.

He turned and walked to a drawer.

Unlocked it.

Opened it.

Inside

More keys.

And files.

Stacks of them.

Taye's eyes narrowed slightly.

The man picked up a file.

Opened it.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real.

"You shouldn't be here," he said suddenly.

Taye didn't move.

"You don't even know what this is," the man continued.

Silence.

Then

A knock.

Sharp.

Loud.

Both of them froze.

Another knock.

Harder this time.

"Open the door!"

The voice was cold.

Controlled.

Familiar.

The man's face drained of color.

"They're early…" he whispered.

Taye's chest tightened.

"Take this," the man said suddenly, grabbing a file and pushing it toward him.

Taye hesitated.

"Take it!" the man hissed.

The knocking turned into pounding.

Taye grabbed the file.

Not out of panic.

But instinct.

"Back door," the man said, pointing.

Taye moved.

Fast.

Through a narrow hallway.

To a small door at the back.

Unlocked.

He stepped out.

Into a tight passage.

And ran.

Behind him,

The front door broke open.

Voices.

Shouting.

Taye didn't look back.

Didn't slow down.

He ran until the noise faded.

Until the world returned.

Until his breathing steadied.

Then he stopped.

Leaning slightly forward.

The file still in his hand.

His first assignment.

Was never just a delivery.

It was a test.

And now…

He had something more.

Something they didn't expect him to have.

Taye looked down at the file.

His eyes darker now.

Sharper.

This wasn't just a step anymore.

This was a shift.

And without realizing it…

He had just crossed a line he couldn't uncross.
