I threw my bloodied hands up to shield myself on instinct, but rather than get chopped up in its mouth like dinner, another round of gun fire cracked above me and the creature let out another horrendous shriek.
It staggered back and I lowered my hand for another shot, to see the bullet fly and land in the spot between the creature's eyes.
It jerked but stayed upright and snarled at something behind me.
My spine tingled with awareness and I knew one of my mates was here.
A third bullet flew. A fourth. A fifth. In quick succession. The creature's shrieks grew louder, its head snapping back, and black blood splashed all over the earth around me as it tried to steer, to get off the ground.
Another bullet found its wing and its massive body tipped to the side, and it collapsed into me, crushing me to the ground when a final bullet blasted through its skull.
