Cherreads

Chapter 18 - The Hunt Reverses

The market district was crowded.

Kisuke walked through the throng of people. He smiled at a vendor. He bought a bag of roasted chestnuts. He looked like a man with nowhere to be. But his eyes were moving. Left. Right. Behind. He stopped at a noodle stall. He watched the reflection in the metal pot. A man in a gray jacket stood ten meters away. He was not eating. He was not looking at the food. He was looking at Kisuke.

Kisuke stirred his noodles. He waited. The man in gray turned away. He walked into the crowd. Kisuke did not follow. He did not need to. He had seen the same man yesterday. And the day before.

(Kisuke): "Amateur hour."

He ate a chestnut. It was hot. He pulled out his phone. He sent a single message to the group chat.

TAIL CONFIRMED. SECTOR 7.

He put the phone away. He finished his noodles. He did not look back again.

Lisa sat in her studio.

The room was dark. Only the glow of six monitors lit her face. She was reviewing footage from the street below. Her building had no security. She had installed her own. She scrolled back three days. She paused. A black sedan was parked across the street. Engine off. Lights off. It had not moved in seventy two hours. She zoomed in. The windows were tinted. She could not see inside. But she knew what it was. It was not a resident's car. No one parked for three days without moving. It was a watchtower.

Lisa leaned back in her chair. She rubbed her temples. She typed a command. She traced the license plate.

REGISTERED TO A SHELL COMPANY.

She sighed. She opened the group chat.

SURVEILLANCE ACTIVE. STUDIO COMPROMISED.

She closed the laptop. She did not pack her bags. She did not run. She simply turned off the monitors. The room went dark.

The call came at 03:00 AM.

Dante was awake. He was cleaning his weapon. The phone buzzed on the table.

EIKICHI.

Dante answered.

"The warehouse," Eikichi said. His voice was gravel. Rough. Tired.

"Which one."

"Sector 9. The secondary storage."

Dante stopped cleaning. He set the cloth down.

"Casualties."

"None. It was empty."

"Fire."

"Accelerant. Professional job."

Dante stood up. He walked to the window. The city was dark. But in the distance, a glow rose into the sky. Orange. Hungry.

"Who."

"We do not know yet."

Dante ended the call. He looked at the glow. It was not a random attack. It was a message. We know where you sleep.

The safehouse meeting room was cold.

The crew sat around the steel table. No one spoke. Kisuke leaned back in his chair. He balanced a knife on his finger. Lisa typed on her tablet. She did not look up. Eikichi stood by the door. His arms were crossed. Dante sat at the head of the table. He waited.

Isaac stood at the whiteboard. He had drawn lines connecting the three incidents. The tail. The car. The fire. Red marker. Sharp angles.

"They are not random," Isaac said. His voice was calm. But his eyes were dark. "They are probes."

Kisuke stopped balancing the knife. "Probes for what."

"Pressure."

Isaac turned to face them. "Edward is not hiding. He is not running. He is marking us." He tapped the board. "Kisuke is the muscle. They tail him to see how you react to threat." He tapped again. "Lisa is the eyes. They watch her to see what you protect." He tapped the third point. "The warehouse is the supply. They burn it to see where you bleed."

Dante watched the board. He did not speak.

"They are mapping us," Isaac said. "They are looking for the weak point."

"We do not have weak points," Eikichi said.

Isaac looked at him. "Everyone has a weak point."

Silence filled the room. It was heavy. Suffocating. Lisa stopped typing. She looked at Isaac. "What are you saying."

Isaac put the marker down. He took off his glasses. He cleaned them slowly. "Edward knows Dante," Isaac said. "He knows Dante does not care about money. He does not care about supplies."

"He cares about people," Lisa said.

"Yes." Isaac put his glasses back on. "He is testing the crew to see who matters most. He is cutting away the noise." He looked at Dante. "When he finds the thing you cannot lose… he will strike."

Dante's hand tightened on the table. The metal creaked.

"Who," Dante said. His voice was a whisper. But it cut through the room.

Isaac did not hesitate. "Sophie."

The name hung in the air. Kisuke stopped breathing. Lisa froze. Eikichi's eyes narrowed. Dante stood up. The chair scraped against the floor. The sound was loud.

(Kairo): "Probability confirms. She is the leverage."

(Mūn): "He is coming for her. Now."

(Dante): "No."

Dante pulled out his phone. His fingers moved fast. He dialed Sophie's number. It rang once. Twice. Three times. No answer. Dante's jaw tightened. He dialed again. Still no answer.

(Kairo): "She is not ignoring you. She cannot answer."

(Mūn): "Move."

Dante looked at the crew. "Lock down the safehouse," he said.

"Where are you going," Isaac asked.

"To her."

"Dante, wait," Isaac said. "If this is a trap"

Dante opened the door. "Then I will spring it."

He stepped out into the hallway. He did not run. He walked. But his pace was deadly. He knew Edward. He knew the game. Edward did not want to kill Sophie. Not yet. He wanted Dante to watch.

Dante reached the stairwell. He took the steps two at a time. He needed to be faster. He needed to be there before the shadow fell. His phone buzzed in his hand. A message. Unknown number. He opened it.

SHE IS WAITING.

Dante stopped. He stared at the screen. The words burned into his eyes. He pocketed the phone. He pushed open the door to the ground floor. The night air hit him. Cold. Sharp.

He got into his car. He did not buckle up. He started the engine. The tires screeched as he pulled out. He merged into traffic. He did not care about the lights. He did not care about the speed. He drove like a man with nothing left to lose. Except her.
