The capital received me with its characteristic indifference.
This was not a complaint. One of the qualities I had always valued about a large city was precisely this — the way it did not require you to be remarkable in order to exist in it. You could carry anything through its streets and the city would not pause. You could be in the middle of something significant and the city would continue its own enormous, unrelated business with complete serenity. There was a liberty in that. A privacy.
I went back to work on Tuesday.
