Chapter 2 - Chapter 1 — E-Rank… But Something Was Wrong

The hall wasn't silent.

It only felt that way.

Voices whispered across the room—low, controlled, but impossible to ignore.

"Next."

The instructor's voice cut through the noise.

A boy stepped forward confidently.

The moment he entered the circle—

Light surged.

Clean.

Stable.

Perfect.

Lines of energy wrapped around him in structured layers.

"…Four circuits. Stable configuration."

The examiner paused.

"…Coal Rank. Structure Type."

A ripple moved through the hall.

"Coal already?"

"That's high…"

"He'll get into top class…"

The boy stepped down, satisfied.

Zane crossed his arms.

"Not bad."

Eira nodded.

"Better than average."

Nyra said nothing.

Her eyes stayed on the circle.

"Next."

Another student stepped forward.

This time—

The energy flowed differently.

Not sharp.

Not rigid.

Fluid.

"…Phase Type. Three circuits."

More whispers.

Zane smirked slightly.

"Looks like this batch is stacked."

Eira smiled.

"Or we just underestimated everyone."

Nyra spoke quietly.

"…no."

A pause.

"…just average."

Zane laughed.

"Tough."

Behind them—

Kaizen stood still.

Not nervous.

Not excited.

Just—

Observing.

The circle.

The energy.

The pattern.

"Kaizen Vale."

For a moment—

No one reacted.

Then Zane glanced back.

"…you're up."

Eira turned.

"Good luck."

Nyra's eyes shifted.

Just slightly.

Kaizen stepped forward.

Each step felt normal.

But something—

Felt off.

He entered the circle.

Nothing happened.

A second passed.

Then—

The energy activated.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

Zane frowned.

"…why is it delayed?"

Eira leaned forward.

"…that's not normal."

Nyra's gaze sharpened.

The energy rose—

But it didn't form clean lines.

It flickered.

Split—

Then forced itself back together.

"…One circuit."

The examiner's voice slowed.

"…Low density."

A pause.

"…Unstable output."

Silence.

Then—

"…E-Rank."

The reaction came immediately.

"E-rank?"

"That low?"

"Unstable too?"

"That's basically useless…"

Zane blinked.

"…seriously?"

Eira frowned.

"…something's off…"

Nyra spoke quietly.

"…no."

A pause.

"…something didn't fail."

Zane looked at her.

"…then what was that?"

Nyra didn't look away from Kaizen.

"…it was interrupted."

Kaizen stepped off the circle.

The light vanished instantly.

Like nothing had happened.

But—

Something had.

As he walked back—

The whispers followed.

"Unstable users don't last…"

"He won't make it past first term…"

Zane didn't speak.

Eira looked unsure.

Nyra—

Watched.

Carefully.

Kaizen stopped at his place.

His hand tightened slightly.

A faint spark flickered across his fingers—

Gone instantly.

"…doesn't work."

He said it quietly.

Only to himself.

But his eyes—

Didn't show disappointment.

Only focus.

Because for a moment—

Just a moment—

It hadn't felt wrong.

"That wasn't all."

The circle glowed again.

Another student stepped forward.

Another future decided.

But Kaizen wasn't watching anymore.

He was thinking.

About that moment.

That split.

That almost—

Something deep inside him—

Responded.

Faint.

Hidden.

Waiting.
