Chapter 6 - Tides of the Night

Night fell slowly over Mistcliff, but it did not bring peace.

It brought change.

Kael noticed it first in the silence. The constant hum of insects, the rustling of leaves, even the distant cries of creatures—all of it faded into something heavier. Something watching.

The glowing plants around their camp flickered softly, casting pale blue light across the mist. Shadows stretched unnaturally between the trees, shifting even when nothing moved.

Kael sat near the small fire Lyra had built, his staff resting across his knees. His eyes scanned the forest, alert.

"This place feels… different at night," he said quietly.

Lyra didn't look up from sharpening her dagger. "It is. Daytime on Mistcliff is just a warning. Nighttime is the real test."

Kael swallowed.

The air grew colder.

A low wind began to move through the trees, carrying with it a faint, eerie sound—like whispers just beyond hearing.

Kael frowned. "Do you hear that?"

Lyra nodded. "Don't listen too closely. Some sounds here aren't meant to be understood."

That didn't help.

Kael tightened his grip on his staff. His Tide Binding stirred uneasily, reacting to the moisture in the air. The mist around them seemed thicker now, almost… alive.

Then—

A branch snapped.

Kael shot to his feet.

"Something's here."

Lyra stood immediately, her expression serious. "Stay focused. Don't panic."

Another sound—closer this time.

Something moved through the mist.

Fast.

It appeared without warning.

A long, shadowy creature burst from the fog, its body sleek and low, its eyes glowing faintly like dying embers. Its limbs were too thin, too sharp, and its movement… unnatural.

Kael's heart slammed against his chest.

"What is that?!"

"Night Stalker," Lyra said calmly, though her stance tightened. "They hunt in the dark. Fast, quiet, and they don't give up easily."

The creature circled them slowly, its gaze fixed on Kael.

"…Why is it looking at me?" he asked.

Lyra didn't hesitate. "Because you're the weaker one."

"…Great."

The creature lunged.

Kael reacted on instinct.

He threw his hand forward, pulling moisture from the air and nearby stream. A thin wave formed instantly, crashing toward the creature.

But it was too fast.

It dodged.

The wave slammed into a tree instead, splashing uselessly.

"Too slow!" Lyra shouted. "Predict it!"

Kael gritted his teeth. His breathing quickened as the creature circled again, faster this time.

Think.

Don't react. Predict.

The creature lowered its body.

Then it moved—

Not at him.

To the side.

Kael's eyes widened.

"It's trying to flank—!"

He spun, forcing the water to follow his movement. This time, instead of launching it forward, he spread it outward, forming a loose barrier around himself.

The creature leapt—

And hit the water.

It slowed for just a moment.

That was enough.

Lyra rushed in, slashing at its side with precision. The creature shrieked, retreating into the mist.

But it didn't leave.

Kael's breathing was uneven. "It's still out there…"

Lyra nodded. "Of course it is. Night Stalkers don't give up after one attempt."

Kael clenched his fists.

"Then what do we do?"

Lyra looked at him seriously. "We survive until morning. Or we drive it away."

The mist shifted again.

This time—

Two more glowing eyes appeared.

Kael's stomach dropped.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

Three of them now.

They circled slowly, their movements coordinated, almost intelligent.

Kael felt fear rising again, stronger this time. His body was tired. His control wasn't perfect. And now he was outnumbered.

But then—

He felt it.

The water.

Not just the stream nearby.

The mist.

The air.

Everything around him.

The Tide Binding pulsed stronger than ever before.

"…Wait," he whispered.

Lyra glanced at him. "What is it?"

"I think… I've been using it wrong."

The creatures began to close in.

Kael stepped forward.

Instead of pulling water toward him, he focused outward.

The moisture in the air responded.

The mist began to move.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

The fog around them thickened, swirling under Kael's control. The glowing plants flickered as the mist twisted into shifting currents.

The creatures hesitated.

Confused.

"Now!" Lyra shouted.

Kael moved his hands, guiding the mist like flowing water. He couldn't see clearly, but neither could they.

One of the creatures lunged blindly—

Straight into a concentrated stream of water Kael had condensed in front of him.

BAM!

It was thrown back violently.

Another tried to circle behind him—

But Kael felt it.

The moisture shifted.

He turned instantly, sending a sharp wave crashing into it.

Lyra took advantage, striking the third with precise, controlled movements, driving it back into the trees.

The creatures shrieked.

Then—

They retreated.

The forest fell silent once more.

Kael dropped to his knees.

His chest heaved as the mist slowly settled back into its natural state.

"I… I did it…"

Lyra exhaled, lowering her dagger. "You adapted. That's what matters."

Kael looked at his hands.

"They weren't just attacking… they were using the darkness. The mist. So I…"

"…used it first," Lyra finished, a small smile forming. "Exactly."

Kael let out a shaky laugh.

"I almost died."

Lyra shrugged. "That's how you know you're improving."

"…That's not comforting."

The rest of the night passed more quietly.

Kael stayed awake, sitting near the fading fire, watching the mist carefully. His body was exhausted, but his mind was alive.

He replayed the fight over and over.

Not just what he did—

But what he felt.

The connection.

The control.

For the first time, the Tide Binding didn't feel like something he was forcing.

It felt… natural.

Like breathing.

As dawn approached, the mist began to thin.

The glowing plants dimmed, and the forest slowly returned to its daytime rhythm. Sounds crept back—birds, insects, the distant flow of water.

Kael looked toward the horizon, where faint light began to break through.

"We made it…"

Lyra stretched slightly. "Barely. But that's enough."

Kael stood slowly, his body sore but steady.

"I'm starting to understand it," he said. "Not fully… but a little."

Lyra nodded. "Good. Because Mistcliff isn't done with you yet."

Kael looked deeper into the forest.

For the first time, he wasn't just nervous.

He was ready.
