Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Closer Than You Think

The words stayed on the screen longer than they should have.

You're closer than you think.

Tyland didn't move at first. Around him, the compound was still in chaos alarms screaming, guards scrambling, shadows running in every direction.

But none of it mattered anymore.

Because that message changed everything.

Elara stepped closer. "That's not just a reaction," she said. "They're guiding us."

Kael shook his head slightly. "No," he said. "They're controlling the path."

Tyland finally lowered the phone, his mind already shifting. "Same thing," he said quietly.

A loud crash echoed from deeper inside the compound, but Tyland didn't look toward it.

He was looking ahead.

"Move," he said.

They pushed forward into the building, leaving the chaos behind them. The inside was different cleaner, quieter, more controlled. The kind of place that didn't match the outside defenses.

Elara noticed it too. "This doesn't feel like a stronghold," she said. "It feels like…"

"A front," Kael finished.

Tyland nodded once.

They moved deeper, their footsteps echoing against polished floors. Doors lined the hallway, most of them locked, some slightly open but none of them felt important.

Because this wasn't where the real answers were.

Another vibration.

Tyland stopped.

Slowly pulled out his phone.

A new message.

"Keep going."

Elara let out a quiet breath. "They're leading us inside."

Kael's tone darkened. "Or deeper into a trap."

Tyland looked ahead.

Then walked.

The hallway ended at a single door.

Black.

Unmarked.

Everything about it felt wrong.

"They want us to open that," Elara said.

Tyland nodded. "Yes."

Kael stepped forward slightly. "Then maybe we shouldn't."

Tyland glanced at him.

Then back at the door.

"They've been ten steps ahead this entire time," he said. "If this is a trap… we're already in it."

Silence.

No one argued.

Tyland reached for the handle.

Paused.

Just for a second.

Then pushed it open.

Darkness.

Complete.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then

The lights flickered on.

And everything changed.

The room wasn't empty.

It was filled with screens.

Dozens of them.

Each one displaying something different

Locations.

Footage.

People.

And in the center

One screen larger than the rest.

Showing them.

Right now.

Elara's expression hardened instantly. "They've been watching everything."

Kael stepped closer, scanning the screens. "Not just watching," he said. "Recording."

Tyland didn't speak.

Because he saw something else.

A pattern.

Some of the screens weren't live.

They were older.

Moments.

Events.

Memories.

His memories.

The night he disappeared.

The betrayal.

The blood.

All of it

Captured.

A cold realization settled in.

"This was never random," Tyland said quietly.

Elara looked at him. "What do you mean?"

Tyland's eyes didn't leave the screens.

"They didn't just watch us," he said.

A pause.

Then

"They built this."

Silence fell.

Because that meant one thing.

Everything they thought they knew

Every choice.

Every mistake.

Every loss

Had been part of something much bigger.

Another screen flickered.

Then

It changed.

A single message appeared across all of them.

"Welcome to the center."

The lights dimmed slightly.

And for the first time

It didn't feel like they were getting closer to the enemy.

It felt like

They had just stepped exactly where they were meant to be.
