Chapter 77 - Episode 77 : Trial of the Mist

The restored Veil Gate remained behind them.

Its ancient ring continued glowing beneath the waters of the Floating Meridian, connected once again to Grand Meridian.

The three brothers, Valek, and Bardin had already departed.

Their skiff moved south.

The sea was calm.

For the first time since discovering the sunken city, nobody spoke about the ruins.

They believed their work was finished.

They were wrong.

THE CITY THAT ROSE AGAIN

Far behind them, beneath the ocean...

the restored Veil Gate released another pulse.

THUM.

The resonance traveled through the submerged ruins.

Ancient systems began responding.

One by one, technomagik platforms awakened.

KRRRNNNG...

Massive structures slowly moved beneath the water.

The Floating Meridian's foundations began rising.

Broken platforms surfaced.

Ancient docks emerged.

Collapsed towers pushed through the waves.

Water poured from the streets.

The city was beginning to resurface.

Its systems had recognized the restored Meridian network.

The Floating Meridian was not dead.

It had simply been waiting for its Gate to awaken again.

Ancient lights appeared across the city.

One after another.

LIGHT.

LIGHT.

LIGHT.

The enormous central platform finally rose above the ocean.

The ruins were exposed to the sunlight for the first time in centuries.

The city was ready to be rebuilt.

But the travelers knew nothing about it.

They were already far away.

THE FIRST RIVER

The ocean disappeared.

Dorion looked down.

The skiff was no longer sailing across seawater.

It was moving through a narrow river.

Dense trees rose on both sides.

Their trunks were enormous.

Their roots disappeared beneath black water.

Mist floated between the branches.

Dorion looked behind them.

The ocean was gone.

"What happened?"

Lirion checked every sensor.

"We entered another environment without crossing a visible boundary."

Valek looked at Bardin.

"You know this place?"

Bardin slowly nodded.

"Not personally."

He reached inside a compartment of his exo-suit and pulled out an old map.

"I know the stories."

The map was covered with faded ink.

Most of the routes were incomplete.

Several had been crossed out.

Some seemed to contradict each other.

Bardin pointed toward the river.

"This is where the old accounts begin."

Sorion approached.

"What accounts?"

Bardin answered:

"The Trial of the Mist."

THE TRIAL OF THE MIST

The mist thickened.

Then a voice echoed across the water.

It did not sound human.

It sounded like an ancient recording carried through the trees.

"TRAVELER."

Everyone became silent.

"YOU SEEK THE ROAD TO MIREHAVEN."

The water around them began glowing.

"THEN YOU MUST FIRST PROVE THAT YOU CAN DISTINGUISH THE ROAD FROM THE ILLUSION."

The river split.

Three waterways appeared.

The voice continued.

"THREE ROADS."

"ONE TRUTH."

"TWO RETURN."

The mist concealed the ends of the rivers.

Bardin studied them.

"All three are identical."

Lirion scanned them.

"Same depth."

Another scan.

"Same current."

He examined their resonance.

"Same energy signature."

Dorion looked at Sorion.

"Can your compass choose?"

Sorion held it out.

The needle spun faster.

"No."

Bardin slowly smiled.

"Then we're going to have to do this the old way."

Dorion frowned.

"What old way?"

Bardin lifted his instrument.

"Listen."

THE RIVER OF ILLUSION

They chose the middle river.

The skiff moved slowly.

At first, nothing happened.

Then the mist began forming shapes.

A city appeared.

Grand Meridian.

The harbor was full of ships.

Merchants walked along the docks.

People called to them.

A familiar voice shouted Dorion's name.

Dorion turned.

His expression changed.

He saw Elysia of Nordfrost standing on the dock.

Someone from his past.

Someone who should not have been there.

Sorion immediately noticed.

"Don't look at it."

Dorion clenched his fist.

The image smiled.

"Come home."

Dorion looked away.

The entire city disappeared.

Bardin watched him.

"That is how the river works."

"It shows you what you want."

Another illusion appeared.

Aurion Citadel.

Then Solaris.

Then Borealis.

Then the Floating Meridian.

Each seemed completely real.

Valek stared at Solaris.

For a moment, he nearly stepped forward.

Then Bardin's lute sounded.

A single note.

Valek looked at him.

Bardin shook his head.

"Don't follow what you remember."

"Remember what you came for."

THE RIVERS MULTIPLY

The river divided again.

Three became six.

Six became twelve.

Then twenty-four.

Every direction contained water.

Every river appeared to lead toward something important.

Some showed ancient cities.

Others showed people they knew.

One showed a massive Bronze Plate standing inside a temple.

Another showed the twelve relics already assembled.

Another showed the brothers returning home as heroes.

Dorion stared.

"That one is tempting."

Sorion answered:

"That's why it's false."

The mist became thicker.

The rivers multiplied again.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

There was no longer any obvious path.

Lirion shut down the navigation system.

Dorion looked at him.

"Why?"

"It's useless here."

He stepped away from the controls.

"We've been trying to measure something that doesn't obey measurement."

Bardin nodded.

"Now you're learning."

BARDIN'S ANCIENT SONG

Bardin slowly raised his lute.

The first notes were quiet.

Almost fragile.

A simple traveling melody.

The sound moved across the water.

Nothing happened.

He continued.

A second phrase.

Then a third.

The mist began moving.

One false river disappeared.

Bardin continued playing.

Another vanished.

Then another.

The old melody was not a spell.

It was a memory.

A song passed through generations of travelers who had once navigated these waters.

Bardin's ancestors had never possessed a perfect map.

They remembered the rivers through music.

The melody changed according to the direction of the current.

The rhythm changed when the river divided.

The final verse was only played when the correct road appeared.

Bardin reached that part.

The mist suddenly parted.

One river remained.

It was completely dark.

No reflection.

No illusion.

No light.

Only water.

Bardin stopped playing.

"There."

Sorion looked at it.

His compass stopped spinning.

The needle pointed toward the dark river.

VALek AND SORION

The remaining mist suddenly became luminous.

Valek's Solar resonance responded instinctively.

Warm golden light surrounded him.

The mist recoiled.

Sorion's Veil resonance answered from the opposite side.

Silver-violet shadow spread across the water.

Light and shadow touched.

Instead of canceling each other...

they revealed the river.

The hidden current became visible.

It flowed beneath the other false waterways like a second road.

Valek stared.

"So the light reveals what is hidden."

Sorion nodded.

"And the shadow prevents the light from being deceived."

Bardin smiled.

"Perhaps Mirehaven expected both of you."

THE RIVER ATTACKS

The river suddenly accelerated.

The skiff lurched forward.

WHOOSH!

Dorion grabbed the railing.

"That's new!"

The water became violent.

Roots crashed down from above.

The skiff twisted between them.

Lirion took control.

"Hold on!"

He manually adjusted the stabilizers.

The ancient skiff tilted almost vertically.

A massive branch swept over them.

Dorion ducked.

Valek shielded Bardin.

Bardin continued playing.

The river divided again.

Left.

Right.

Straight.

Three identical channels.

The ancient voice returned.

"CHOOSE."

Lirion looked at the water.

No instruments.

No measurements.

No visible difference.

Sorion closed his eyes.

He listened.

Bardin's melody changed.

Sorion felt the rhythm.

Three beats.

Pause.

Two beats.

Pause.

One.

He opened his eyes.

"Left."

Dorion immediately turned the skiff.

The left river swallowed them.

The other two collapsed.

BOOOOOOM!

The false waterways disappeared behind them.

THE LAST ILLUSION

The river became calm.

Ahead was a huge gate.

Beyond it stood a magnificent city.

Mirehaven.

Its towers rose from the wetlands.

Golden lights floated above blackwater.

Ancient bridges connected enormous trees.

A vast Bronze Plate emblem stood above the city.

The brothers stared.

Bardin suddenly stopped playing.

"No."

Sorion looked at him.

"What?"

"That isn't Mirehaven."

The image began smiling.

The city slowly changed.

Its towers became ruins.

The beautiful streets became flooded graves.

The Bronze Plate emblem cracked.

A voice whispered:

"ENTER."

Bardin shook his head.

"Don't."

The image collapsed.

The river ahead became empty.

A single narrow channel remained.

Sorion's compass pointed toward it.

"That is the road."

ESCAPING THE TRIAL

The skiff entered the final channel.

The mist became violent.

Everything around them began collapsing.

False rivers vanished.

Illusory cities dissolved.

Ancient voices faded.

The trees twisted into darkness.

Then—

SPLAAAAASH!

The skiff burst through the mist.

Sunlight struck them.

Everyone looked around.

They were back on open water.

The sea stretched behind them.

The strange river was gone.

The mist remained far behind.

Bardin lowered his instrument.

His exo-suit was covered in droplets of water.

Dorion breathed heavily.

"That was supposed to be a trial?"

Bardin nodded.

"Yes."

"That was worse than a battle."

"That's why it's called a trial."

Valek looked toward the mist.

"How many more?"

Bardin looked at his old map.

He turned it over.

On the back was an inscription.

He read it slowly.

"The Mist is only the first door."

Dorion sighed.

"Of course it is."

THE COMPASS AWAKENS AGAIN

Sorion examined the bronze compass.

The Map Core resonance had changed.

A new symbol had appeared around the outer ring.

A small river surrounded by mist.

Lirion examined it.

"The compass recorded the trial."

Sorion nodded.

"Then it can learn."

Bardin looked at the compass.

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because the roads ahead won't become easier."

He pointed south.

Beyond the horizon, enormous clouds gathered.

Black trees could barely be seen beneath them.

The Shrouden Swamps were approaching.

THE FLOATING MERIDIAN

Far behind them...

the Floating Meridian was almost completely above the surface.

Ancient machines continued restoring the city.

The harbor lights came alive.

The old docking platforms extended.

A massive technomagik beacon rose above the central tower.

Then the restored Veil Gate activated.

For the first time in centuries, the Floating Meridian had a functioning connection to the wider world.

Ships could eventually return.

Merchants could eventually return.

Travelers could eventually return.

The ruined city was no longer merely an archaeological discovery.

It had become a living destination again.

And none of the travelers knew that their departure had caused it.

THE SECOND HORIZON

The skiff continued south.

The sea became darker.

Strange creatures appeared beneath the surface.

Some were entirely organic.

Others had mechanical structures fused into their bodies.

A massive whale-like creature passed beneath the skiff, its translucent fins glowing with blue technomagik patterns.

Small creatures followed it like fish.

Their bodies looked organic, but tiny bronze mechanisms moved beneath their skin.

Farther away, something enormous surfaced.

Its back was covered in ancient metal plates.

It breathed once.

Then disappeared beneath the waves.

Bardin watched in silence.

"This world still remembers."

Dorion looked at him.

"What?"

"The machines."

"The creatures."

"The cities."

"The songs."

He looked toward the mist behind them.

"Everything we thought was dead is simply waiting for someone to remember."

Sorion looked at his compass.

The needle remained fixed.

South.

THE SECOND TRIAL

Night began falling.

The stars appeared above the ocean.

For a moment, they were beautiful enough to make everyone forget the danger ahead.

Then the compass projected a new image.

A massive network of waterways.

A symbol appeared.

SECOND TRIAL — THE RIVER OF MEMORY

Bardin stared at it.

He slowly lowered his lute.

"That one wasn't in my ancestors' songs."

Dorion looked at him.

"So you don't know what comes next?"

Bardin smiled.

"For the first time today..."

He looked toward the southern horizon.

"...I don't."

Valek laughed.

"Then we're finally exploring something even the old bard doesn't know."

Bardin raised his instrument.

"Careful."

"What?"

"That's usually when the interesting stories begin."

The brothers laughed.

The skiff continued into the night.

Above them, the stars formed an ancient pattern.

Below them, something enormous moved beneath the water.

And far to the south...

beyond the Shrouden Swamps...

Mirehaven waited.

The first trial had been passed.

But the road had only just begun.
