Chapter 63 - Episode 63 : Master Caelion's Guidance

Sorion heard the sound of distant thunder.

He opened his eyes.

It wasn't thunder.

It was machinery.

A deep metallic roar rolled through the city, followed by a flash of blue-white light beyond the rooftops.

People in the streets stopped.

The bells of Veyrath began ringing.

One.

Two.

Three times.

Then the entire city seemed to hold its breath.

Lirion rushed from the travelers' quarters.

"What happened?"

Dorion was already outside.

The local citizens were looking toward the central plaza.

The Veil Gate was glowing.

Not faintly.

Not partially.

It was fully awake.

A vast silver surface filled the ancient ring.

Energy flowed through the surrounding crystal conduits, illuminating the entire plaza.

Sorion stood several steps away.

His bronze compass spun violently.

He whispered:

"The Gate is open."

The Man Who Had Been Waiting

A figure approached through the crowd.

He was old, but his posture was straight.

His robes were simple compared with the elaborate clothing of the higher Technomagisters.

A bronze staff rested in his hand.

The crowd immediately made way.

The chief Magisters bowed.

The ordinary citizens lowered their voices.

The guards stepped aside.

Lirion understood immediately.

"Master Caelion."

The old man looked at the three brothers.

Then at the Gate.

Then at Sorion.

"You've opened something that should have remained sleeping."

Sorion lowered his eyes.

"I didn't mean to."

Caelion smiled faintly.

"I know."

He turned toward the Gate.

"That is why you may still be worth teaching."

The First Lesson

Caelion led them toward the ancient plaza.

"The Gate isn't simply a doorway."

Lirion studied the energy flowing through the rings.

"What is it?"

"A memory bridge."

Sorion looked at him.

Caelion continued.

"Veil Gates connect places."

"But the ancient builders understood something deeper."

"They also connect the memories stored within those places."

Lirion frowned.

"So when Sorion activates it..."

"He does not simply provide energy."

Caelion looked at Sorion.

"He resonates with what the Gate remembers."

Sorion touched his compass.

"Then why did it stay dormant for so long?"

Caelion's expression became serious.

"Because Veyrath forgot."

The Shadow Beneath Veyrath

The three brothers exchanged glances.

Caelion looked toward the city's towers.

"You have seen this city."

"Yes," Dorion said.

"You believe this is Veyrath."

Caelion shook his head.

"This is only what remains of it."

Lirion looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Caelion raised his staff.

The crystal at its tip illuminated.

A projection appeared above the plaza.

The peaceful city disappeared.

In its place stood another Veyrath.

Enormous.

Brilliant.

Chaotic.

Towering structures reached into the clouds.

Massive Technomagik engines floated above streets.

Airships moved between skyscrapers.

Mechanical soldiers patrolled bridges.

Crystal weapons were mounted on buildings.

Medical machines repaired wounded soldiers.

Constructs fought beside living warriors.

The city seemed almost unstoppable.

Lirion stared.

"This..."

Caelion nodded.

"This was Veyrath."

The City Above

The peaceful Veyrath below had been built after the old city nearly destroyed itself.

The original Veyrath had been proud.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

And increasingly dangerous.

Its Technomagisters had learned to manipulate energy on a massive scale.

They built weapons that could break mountains.

Machines that could heal mortal wounds.

Armor that could withstand artillery.

Airships capable of crossing entire regions in hours.

Constructs that could fight without fear.

Technomagik had become so advanced that death itself had become negotiable.

But power changed the people who possessed it.

The city divided.

The Technomagisters competed.

Political factions formed.

And eventually...

Veyrath became chaotic.

The Battle

Caelion's projection suddenly changed.

A street exploded.

Three armored Technomagisters collided with a group of rebels.

One warrior raised a mechanical gauntlet.

A beam of concentrated Technomagik struck the street.

Another fighter deployed a shield.

The impact sent him through a wall.

A medical construct immediately rushed forward.

Blue energy surrounded the wounded warrior.

His broken arm repaired itself.

He stood again.

No fear.

No hesitation.

He returned to battle.

Lirion stared.

"They can heal that quickly?"

Caelion nodded.

"They mastered restoration technology."

Dorion watched the warriors continue fighting.

"They don't fear being injured."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because their machines taught them that wounds could be repaired."

Dorion's expression darkened.

"That would make people reckless."

"It did."

The Lord of Veyrath

At the center of the projection appeared a vast palace.

Above it flew the symbol of Veyrath's ruling house.

The City Lord stood before a council.

"We will not reopen the Veil Gate."

A group of Technomagisters opposed him.

Their leader stepped forward.

"We have lost access to the lower districts."

The City Lord answered:

"And that is why the Gate must remain closed."

The rebel leader slammed his fist onto the table.

"The lower city possesses resources we need."

"They possess peace."

"They possess cowardice."

The City Lord's eyes hardened.

"They possess survival."

The rebels refused to accept his decision.

They became known as the Gatebreakers.

Their purpose was simple.

Open the Veil Gate.

Return to the lower city.

Recover the ancient technology.

And reclaim what they believed had been stolen from them.

The Gatebreakers Arrive

The projection vanished.

Then—

BOOM!

A shockwave struck the plaza.

The expedition instinctively turned toward the sound.

Another explosion followed.

Then another.

People screamed.

A group of armed Technomagisters appeared at the Veil Gate.

They weren't from Veyrath's peaceful districts.

Their armor was advanced.

Mechanical wings unfolded from their backs.

Energy weapons glowed in their hands.

A wounded man stumbled behind them.

A woman shouted:

"Gatebreakers!"

The city guards moved immediately.

Dorion drew his weapon.

"Everyone stay behind us."

The first attacker fired.

A blue Technomagik projectile tore across the street.

Dorion raised his shield.

BOOM!

The impact pushed him backward.

Lirion immediately summoned a mechanical construct.

"Now I understand what Caelion meant."

His construct charged.

The battle had begun.

Technomagik Against Technomagik

The fight was unlike anything the expedition had encountered before.

The Gatebreakers moved with extraordinary speed.

One warrior launched into the air using mechanical thrusters.

Another created a shield from condensed energy.

A third released small autonomous drones.

The machines surrounded the expedition.

Lirion laughed in disbelief.

"They're using machines like weapons!"

Caelion shouted from behind them:

"Because they were designed for war!"

Dorion blocked another attack.

"Then we'll stop them!"

He struck the ground.

Golden-red energy exploded outward.

Two enemy machines were thrown into the street.

But their armor automatically repaired itself.

Lirion stared.

"They're healing!"

"Not healing," Caelion said.

"Regeneration."

One damaged construct reassembled itself.

Lirion smiled.

"Now that's something I want to understand."

Sorion's Battle

A Gatebreaker charged toward Sorion.

His armor unfolded.

Mechanical blades appeared around his arms.

Sorion vanished.

The attacker swung.

Nothing.

Sorion appeared behind him.

The enemy turned.

Sorion moved again.

His attacks weren't powerful.

They were precise.

The warrior couldn't predict him.

Then the enemy activated a Technomagik field.

The entire area became covered in glowing lines.

Sorion stopped.

His movements were suddenly restricted.

The warrior smiled.

"You're trapped."

Sorion closed his eyes.

He listened.

Not to the machine.

To the memory inside it.

He felt the original design.

The purpose.

The weakness.

His eyes opened.

He stepped through the one place where the field did not exist.

The warrior froze.

Sorion struck the power core.

The armor collapsed.

The fighter fell unconscious.

Sorion stood over him.

He didn't kill him.

He simply said:

"Enough."

The Gatebreakers Retreat

The city guards pushed the attackers back.

The Gatebreakers eventually withdrew back inside the Veil Gate toward the upper districts.

One shouted:

"This isn't over!"

The city became silent again.

Broken machines smoked in the streets.

Medical constructs moved among the wounded.

Some civilians were frightened.

Others were angry.

A child cried beside a damaged shop.

A woman held him.

"We're safe."

But Caelion didn't look relieved.

He looked toward the Gate.

"They weren't trying to attack us."

Dorion frowned.

"Then what were they doing?"

"They were testing the defenses."

Lirion's expression changed.

"For the Gate."

Caelion nodded.

"They are the people who want it open."

Why the Gate Was Closed

Caelion brought the brothers into an ancient chamber beneath the city.

There, an old mural covered the walls.

It depicted two Veyraths.

One above.

One below.

"The people of the original city eventually understood what their technology had become."

Caelion touched the mural.

"They were no longer fighting because they believed in something."

"They were fighting because they possessed the means to fight."

Dorion looked at the image.

"So they sealed themselves away."

"Yes."

"They deactivated the Gate."

"Yes."

"To stop the people below from reaching the chaotic city."

Caelion nodded.

"But they created another problem."

Lirion understood.

"The people below forgot."

"Not everything."

Caelion looked at him.

"But enough."

The Problem

Sorion looked at the Gate.

"If the Gatebreakers use the Gate..."

"The war above could reach Veyrath below."

Dorion's expression hardened.

"Then we close it."

Caelion shook his head.

"We cannot simply close it again."

"Why?"

"Because the corrupted memory is already spreading."

Sorion looked at him.

Caelion continued.

"Every time the Gate activates, the old Veyrath becomes stronger in memory."

"The people below are beginning to remember."

"And if those memories remain corrupted..."

He looked toward the city.

"They may become what their warrior ancestors were."

The Core

Caelion brought Sorion to a chamber beneath the Gate.

At its center was a massive crystal structure.

Its surface was covered in cracks.

A faint pulse moved through it.

"This is Veyrath's Core."

Lirion approached carefully.

"It isn't broken completely."

"No."

"Then why is the Gate unstable?"

Caelion looked at Sorion.

"Because the Core doesn't know which memory is true anymore."

Sorion stared at it.

He felt something inside.

Pain.

Pride.

Fear.

Love.

War.

Peace.

Thousands of memories tangled together.

He stepped closer.

"What do you want me to do?"

Caelion answered:

"Remember."

Sorion looked confused.

"I don't know what happened here."

"You don't need to."

Caelion placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Listen to the Core."

"Separate the truth from the corruption."

"Return what was forgotten."

Sorion looked at the damaged Core.

Then at his brothers.

Dorion nodded.

Lirion smiled.

"We're with you."

The Choice

Veyrath continued living.

People repaired their homes.

Medical machines treated the wounded.

Children returned to the streets.

Technomagisters repaired their weapons.

And somewhere above the clouds...

the Gatebreakers prepared their next assault.

They believed the Gate must be open.

The City Lord believed the Gate must remain closed.

The ordinary citizens only wanted peace.

And beneath them all...

the Core remembered a war nobody fully understood anymore.

Sorion placed both hands against it.

The chamber filled with silver light.

He saw Veyrath.

Not as it was now.

Not as it had been.

But as it truly was.

Sorion understood.

The city had not been destroyed by Technomagik.

It had nearly been destroyed by forgetting what Technomagik was meant to serve.

People.

Sorion opened his eyes.

The Core pulsed.

Once.

Then again.

A crack in the crystal began closing.

Far above...

the dormant systems of Veyrath awakened.

The city's lights became brighter.

The Veil Gate stabilized.

And somewhere in the upper city...

an ancient machine recognized the restored signal.

A voice emerged from a forgotten speaker:

"Core integrity recovering."

Another voice answered:

"Memory restoration detected."

The Gatebreakers stopped.

Their leader looked toward the horizon.

"What did they do?"

Nobody answered.

Below the city...

Sorion remained connected to the Core.

He could feel every memory returning.

The good ones.

The painful ones.

The beautiful ones.

The terrible ones.

He understood now.

He wasn't being asked to erase the past.

He was being asked to restore it.

And above Veyrath...

the ancient city began remembering itself.

Must Remain Forgotten

The chamber beneath Veyrath had gone silent.

Sorion remained with both hands against the Core.

Silver light moved through his arms.

At first, he expected to see the peaceful city.

The markets.

The children.

The farmers.

The Technomagisters.

The city he had walked through only days before.

Instead...

he saw blood.

The City Before the City

Veyrath had once been enormous.

Its towers had reached into the clouds.

Its streets had been filled with machines.

Its airships had darkened the sky.

Technomagik flowed through everything.

But this was not the peaceful Veyrath they knew.

The people of this city did not merely use Technomagik.

They commanded it.

Warriors carried weapons powered by living crystals.

Constructs marched in perfect formations.

Airships carried entire battalions.

Mechanical beasts guarded the gates.

Technomagisters stood upon enormous platforms, controlling machines capable of tearing through fortifications.

And the people celebrated.

Not because they had survived a war.

Because they had won one.

Sorion watched in silence.

"What happened here?"

Caelion stood behind him.

His face was unusually serious.

"This is the memory I never wanted you to see."

The Enemy Within Their Own Name

The vision shifted again.

The conquering army returned home.

But another army was waiting.

Their banners were identical.

Their armor was almost identical.

Their machines were superior.

The soldiers stopped.

One commander spoken:

"Veyrath."

The opposing commander answered:

"Veyrath."

Sorion stared.

"They're fighting themselves."

Caelion nodded.

"The city divided."

The two armies attacked.

The sky became filled with machines.

Technomagik weapons crossed between towers.

Airships collided.

Constructs fought constructs.

The streets became battlefields.

And unlike an ordinary war...

both sides understood exactly how the other's machines worked.

They knew every weakness.

Every weapon.

Every defense.

Every healing system.

The battle became almost impossible to stop.

The Veil Gate

The memory changed again.

At the center of the ancient city stood the Veil Gate.

The ancient Veyrath rulers used it to reach other cities.

Not for trade.

For conquest.

Through the Gate came armies.

Weapons.

Constructs.

Resources.

The Gate had been their greatest advantage.

Until their own enemy discovered how to use it.

Veyrath's greatest weapon became the doorway through which Veyrath itself could be attacked.

The rulers finally understood.

If the Gate remained active...

the war would never end.

They deactivated it.

But the knowledge of how to reopen it was not destroyed.

It was hidden.

The Omnission

Then came the moment that changed everything.

A strange wave passed through the city.

Not fire.

Not an explosion.

Not a weapon.

It was something quieter.

The Omnission.

Memories began disappearing.

Names vanished.

Records became meaningless.

Knowledge fragmented.

People forgot instructions.

Engineers forgot designs.

Soldiers forgot commands.

Families forgot the names of their ancestors.

And somewhere within the ancient Gate chamber...

the knowledge of how to reopen the Veil Gate disappeared.

The city survived.

But it no longer remembered what it had been.

The survivors built again.

They became farmers.

Craftsmen.

Teachers.

Ordinary citizens.

They slowly turned away from warfare.

They forgot the conquest.

They forgot the enemy.

They forgot the reason the Gate had been closed.

The Secret Caelion Kept

The vision ended.

Sorion opened his eyes.

He looked at Caelion.

"You knew."

The old Master did not deny it.

"Yes."

"You knew this entire city was built over a city of conquerors."

"Yes."

"And you never told them."

Caelion looked toward the Core.

"If they remember everything..."

"They could become them again."

Sorion frowned.

"But memories matter."

"They do."

"Then why hide this one?"

Caelion's expression became heavy.

"Because there is a difference between remembering a tragedy..."

He looked directly at Sorion.

"...and awakening the ambition that caused it."
