Chapter 55 - Episode 55 : The Gates of Borealis Citadel

"Some cities are built to keep the world out. Others are built to keep the world safe."

The North Road

The Forgotten Outpost had become quiet again.

For the first time in centuries, its fires burned once more.

Ancient Borealis guardians stood upon the restored walls.

Some were still being repaired.

Others had returned to their original stations, watching the mountain passes with patient blue eyes.

The expedition prepared to leave.

Dorion stood beside the gate.

He looked back at the old fortress.

"Will you remain here?"

The guardian commander slowly nodded.

"This is our assigned position."

Dorion smiled.

"Then we'll see you again."

The guardian raised its weapon in salute.

"Proceed safely, travelers."

The gates opened.

The expedition entered the northern road.

The Last Climb

The road became increasingly difficult.

The mountains rose higher.

Snow covered everything.

Even the sunlight seemed colder.

The Founder's Road disappeared completely beneath the ice, but Sorion continued walking.

His compass pointed forward.

Not toward a visible road.

Toward something buried beneath it.

At times he stopped.

A faint Memory Echo would appear.

A caravan.

A group of engineers.

Children traveling beneath heavy blankets.

Soldiers guiding them through the mountains.

Then the memory disappeared.

The past was becoming stronger.

Sorion whispered,

"They're close."

Lirion looked at him.

"How close?"

Sorion stared toward the mountains.

"I don't know."

"But they remember this road."

The Frozen Valley

Near midday, the expedition reached the crest of a mountain ridge.

The Nordfrost guides stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Below them stretched an enormous valley.

It was completely covered in snow.

At first it appeared empty.

Then the clouds shifted.

Sunlight struck something beneath the ice.

The valley glittered.

Not from snow.

From architecture.

Massive towers emerged from the frozen landscape.

Bridges crossed enormous chasms.

Blue lights burned beneath translucent walls.

Spires of ice reached toward the heavens.

The expedition stared.

Lirion slowly lowered his map.

"No..."

He looked again.

"The city isn't buried."

"It was preserved."

Sorion's compass began to pulse.

The needle pointed directly toward the valley.

Ahead stood the greatest city they had seen since leaving Aurion.

Borealis Citadel.

A City Beneath the Ice

The expedition descended.

The closer they came, the more impossible the city appeared.

The walls were not ordinary stone.

They were layers of reinforced crystal ice surrounding ancient Orinthal architecture.

Entire buildings had been incorporated into the frozen structures.

Massive blue conduits carried energy beneath the streets.

Wind turbines turned slowly atop enormous towers.

Mechanical creatures moved between distant buildings.

The city was not dead.

It was alive.

But strangely quiet.

No merchants crowded the roads.

No children played in the streets.

No farmers worked the surrounding fields.

The city seemed to be waiting.

Watching.

The Frozen Road

The expedition reached a broad avenue leading toward the main gate.

The road was perfectly preserved.

Not a single crack crossed its surface.

Snow fell upon it...

but never accumulated.

Lirion crouched beside the road.

"There's heat underneath."

The Nordfrost elder nodded.

"Geothermal channels."

"The entire city is heated from below."

Sorion touched one of the ancient stones.

A Memory Echo immediately struck him.

He saw the same avenue thousands of years earlier.

Crowds.

Markets.

Children.

Travelers.

Music.

Then...

the First War.

The streets emptied.

The gates closed.

The city disappeared beneath the ice.

But unlike the other lost cities...

Borealis had survived.

Sorion opened his eyes.

"They didn't abandon the city."

"They hid it."

The Frozen Guardians

A deep sound suddenly rolled through the valley.

BOOOOOOM.

The expedition stopped.

Another followed.

BOOOOOOM.

The sound came from the city walls.

Massive sections of ice began moving.

Hidden weapons emerged.

Turrets.

Energy cannons.

Mechanical sentinels.

The Iron Legion immediately raised their weapons.

Dorion lifted his hand.

"Hold."

No one fired.

The weapons continued rotating toward them.

A blue light swept across the expedition.

One by one...

everyone was scanned.

The light reached Sorion.

It stopped.

The bronze compass on his chest began glowing.

A distant voice echoed across the valley.

"Memory signature detected."

Lirion stared upward.

"Memory signature?"

The voice continued.

"Origin unknown."

"Identity unresolved."

"Approach remains restricted."

The main gates remained closed.

The Frozen Gaze

Then...

the temperature suddenly dropped.

The wind stopped.

Snowflakes froze in midair.

The expedition watched in horror as a mechanical scout near the front began turning white.

Ice spread across its metal frame.

Its wheels froze.

Its joints locked.

Within seconds...

it had become a solid block of ice.

The Nordfrost warriors immediately stepped backward.

One whispered:

"The Frozen Gaze."

Lirion stared at the machine.

"That's impossible."

Another crawler began freezing.

Then a third.

Dorion shouted:

"Back!"

The expedition retreated from the invisible boundary.

The freezing stopped.

The machines remained frozen.

Nobody moved.

The Secret of Borealis

Lirion examined the frozen crawler from a safe distance.

"The city isn't attacking us."

Sorion looked toward the walls.

"It's protecting itself."

The Nordfrost elder nodded.

"My ancestors told stories of this."

"Anything that approaches the inner walls without the proper protection..."

"...becomes part of the ice."

Lirion immediately opened his journal.

"Then there must be a way through."

Sorion closed his eyes.

The Memory Resonance returned.

For a moment...

he saw ancient travelers approaching the city.

They wore strange crystalline devices around their necks and shoulders.

The freezing effect passed around them.

He opened his eyes.

"I've seen it."

Lirion looked at him.

"Seen what?"

"The device."

"A protection system."

"It was worn here."

The First Attempt

Lirion immediately began searching the expedition's recovered materials.

Cryo-Stabilized Battery Cells.

Ancient Borealis components.

Insulated bronze.

Crystal fragments.

He spread everything across a workbench.

"I can build something."

Dorion looked at the frozen machines outside the boundary.

"How long?"

Lirion sighed.

"Longer than I'd like."

Bardin walked over.

"Then perhaps the mountain can wait."

Lirion laughed.

"That's not how mountains work."

A Different Kind of Battle

The expedition established a temporary camp outside the freezing boundary.

No one dared approach the city.

The Borealis weapons remained aimed at them.

The frozen crawler remained exactly where it had stopped.

The city was neither welcoming them...

nor attacking them.

It was waiting for them to prove they could enter safely.

Lirion worked through the night.

Ironhide craftsmen helped shape the outer casing.

Iron Legion engineers stabilized the energy flow.

Nordfrost hunters provided naturally occurring frost crystals.

Veilkeeper scouts studied the boundary.

Serpent Wastes hunters searched nearby ruins for additional components.

Sunscorched mechanics adapted crawler insulation.

Everyone contributed.

Even the ancient outpost guardians sent a small repair unit carrying recovered Borealis components.

No single person could solve the problem.

It required the entire expedition.

Bardin's Campfire

While the engineers worked...

Bardin sat beside the fire.

He looked toward the enormous frozen city.

"What do you think they're afraid of?"

An Ironhide elder answered,

"Perhaps they aren't afraid."

"Perhaps they're protecting something."

Bardin considered the thought.

Then lifted his violin.

His melody drifted across the snow.

The notes traveled toward the walls.

For a moment...

nothing happened.

Then one tiny blue light appeared upon the nearest tower.

Another answered.

Then another.

The city was listening.

Bardin smiled.

"Even frozen cities can hear music."

The Guardian at the Gate

Near midnight...

a figure appeared upon the highest gate tower.

Everyone saw it.

Tall.

Wrapped in white armor.

A long crystalline cloak flowed behind them.

Their face was concealed beneath a silver mask.

Beside them stood a massive white wolf with glowing blue eyes.

The same wolf that had watched the expedition from Whitefang Forest.

Sorion recognized it immediately.

"The guardian..."

The figure raised one hand.

Every Borealis weapon became silent.

The mysterious guardian looked toward the expedition.

Then toward the frozen machines.

Finally...

toward Sorion.

Their voice carried across the valley.

"You have walked the Founder's Road."

No one answered.

"You awakened Ash Hollow."

"You crossed Ardent Passage."

"You were accepted by Whitefang."

"You restored the Northern Defense Line."

The guardian's gaze settled upon Sorion.

"And you carry memories that do not belong to you."

Sorion stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The guardian remained silent for several seconds.

Then...

"I am the last Gatekeeper of Borealis."

The Gate Opens

The Gatekeeper raised their crystalline spear.

The massive doors began moving.

Ice cracked.

Ancient mechanisms groaned.

Blue light poured through the widening opening.

For the first time in centuries...

the Gates of Borealis opened.

The expedition stood frozen in place.

Not by the city's power.

By awe.

Beyond the gate...

thousands of blue lights illuminated the city.

Ancient machines moved through the streets.

Steam rose from geothermal towers.

And high above the central citadel...

a colossal crystalline structure glowed like a second moon.

The Gatekeeper looked toward the travelers.

"Enter."

A pause.

"But understand this..."

Their voice became solemn.

"Borealis did not survive the First War by defeating its enemies."

"It survived by hiding what the enemy could never understand."

Sorion looked toward the glowing heart of the city.

His compass pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

a third time.

Something deep within Borealis had recognized him.

The Gatekeeper turned toward the inner city.

"Come."

"There are memories here that have waited a very long time to be remembered."

The expedition crossed the threshold.

Behind them...

the Gates of Borealis slowly closed.
