Into the Frostwind Pass
Morning came without a sunrise.
Dark clouds concealed the sky, and the peaks of the Frostfang Mountains vanished behind a curtain of swirling snow.
The expedition left the resting place of the Frozen Caravan in solemn silence.
Behind them stood twelve stone cairns, each bearing the names of those who had sacrificed everything so that others might live.
Ahead...
only white.
Lirion carefully secured the ancient Cryo-Stabilized Battery Cells inside an insulated transport crate.
"They belong to Borealis," he reminded his engineers.
"We're only bringing them home."
Using the map recovered from the caravan, the Nordfrost guides led the expedition toward a narrow mountain trail hidden between towering cliffs.
"The Frostwind Pass," one elder murmured.
"My ancestors crossed this road."
"I never believed I would."
The Mountain Breathes
The climb became steeper with every passing hour.
Snow buried much of the ancient Founder's Road.
Only scattered bronze markers remained visible beneath the ice.
The wind howled through the cliffs like the voice of some ancient giant.
Ironhide craftsmen reinforced wagon wheels with iron chains.
Sunscorched crawler riders lowered their tire pressure, allowing the mechanical crawlers to grip the frozen ground more securely.
Veilkeeper scouts climbed ahead, fastening guide ropes along dangerous ledges.
Every step required patience.
Every mistake could cost lives.
Dorion walked at the front of the caravan.
Not because he distrusted his companions.
Because a leader should be the first to face danger.
The Cryo Storm
Without warning...
the wind stopped.
Silence fell across the mountains.
The Nordfrost hunters immediately looked upward.
"Down!"
The first blast struck like a wall.
A violent Cryo Storm swept through the pass.
Snow exploded into the air.
Ice crystals whipped across exposed skin with the force of tiny blades.
Visibility disappeared.
The temperature plummeted in moments.
Mechanical crawlers struggled against the frozen ground.
Battery gauges dropped rapidly.
One engineer shouted,
"The batteries are freezing!"
Crawler motors slowed.
Bronze gears stiffened.
Even the expedition's lanterns dimmed.
Nature itself was attacking.
A Battle Against the Mountain
Dorion's voice cut through the storm.
"Circle the wagons!"
Iron Legion engineers quickly repositioned the crawlers into a defensive ring, using them as windbreaks against the relentless blizzard.
Ironhide warriors hammered emergency anchors deep into the frozen earth.
Heavy chains secured every wagon together.
Hunters from the Serpent Wastes stretched insulated canvas between vehicles, creating narrow shelters for the children and elderly.
The Nordfrost tribesmen wrapped frost-cloths around exposed Battery Cores, slowing the loss of heat.
No swords were drawn.
No enemy charged.
Yet every member of the expedition fought with everything they had.
Against the mountain itself.
Lirion's Discovery
Inside the engineering wagon, Lirion examined one of the Cryo-Stabilized Battery Cells recovered from the Frozen Caravan.
Unlike the expedition's standard batteries, its energy remained perfectly stable despite the freezing temperatures.
"It wasn't just fuel," he whispered.
"It was designed for this."
Working quickly with Iron Legion engineers, he improvised insulated battery housings using the recovered Cryo technology.
One by one, failing Battery Cells were transferred into the insulated casings.
The crawlers slowly came back to life.
Lights brightened.
Heating systems restarted.
A cheer spread through the expedition.
The ancient engineers of Borealis had reached across a thousand years...
to save them.
The Avalanche
The storm showed no mercy.
A deafening crack echoed from the cliffs above.
Veilkeeper scouts looked upward.
The mountainside collapsed.
An avalanche roared toward the expedition.
"Move!"
There was no time.
Dorion sprinted toward the rear wagons where several apprentices struggled to free a crawler trapped beneath the snow.
He shoved two engineers aside just as a wall of ice crashed down.
The impact buried him beneath snow and shattered stone.
Silence followed.
For one terrifying moment...
no one moved.
Then...
the snow erupted.
Dorion burst through the avalanche, carrying an unconscious apprentice across his shoulders.
His armor was cracked.
Blood trickled from his forehead.
Yet he never slowed.
He placed the young engineer safely beside the healers before turning back toward the collapsing trail.
"There are still others!"
Without hesitation, Ironhide warriors and Serpent Wastes hunters joined him.
Together they dug through snow, pulled survivors from the drifts, and rescued trapped crawlers before the mountain could claim them.
Not a single member of the expedition was left behind.
Sorion's Guiding Light
As the storm reached its fiercest, Sorion once again felt the bronze compass pulse against his chest.
He closed his eyes.
The world faded.
The mountain transformed.
The buried Founder's Road appeared beneath the snow, glowing with soft bronze light.
Ancient relay beacons marked the safest route through the pass.
Stone shelters hidden beneath the cliffs revealed themselves.
Bridges long buried beneath ice shimmered beneath the drifting snow.
The vision lasted only seconds.
But it was enough.
Sorion opened his eyes and pointed toward an unremarkable wall of snow.
"There."
The others stared.
"There is nothing there."
"There is now."
The Ironhide craftsmen began digging.
Moments later...
their shovels struck bronze.
An ancient emergency shelter emerged from beneath centuries of ice.
Its insulated chambers had remained perfectly preserved.
Warmth still lingered within its thick walls thanks to dormant geothermal conduits.
The expedition hurried inside as the blizzard reached its peak.
For the first time in hours...
they could breathe.
Shelter of the Ancients
The shelter had been built for travelers crossing the Frostwind Pass.
Stone bunks lined the walls.
Ancient furnaces still functioned after Lirion repaired a damaged relay valve.
Bronze plaques recorded the names of engineers who had maintained the pass during Orinthal's golden age.
Bardin quietly lit the central hearth.
No one celebrated surviving the storm.
Instead...
they shared food.
Repaired damaged clothing.
Checked every crawler.
Treated every injury.
One apprentice looked toward Dorion.
"You saved my life."
Dorion smiled tiredly.
"One day..."
"You'll save someone else's."
A Light Beyond the Storm
By dawn...
the Cryo Storm finally passed.
The expedition emerged from the shelter.
The mountains sparkled beneath fresh snow.
The sky had become a brilliant blue.
Far ahead...
between towering peaks...
a faint blue light flickered.
Not lightning.
Not the northern sky.
A beacon.
The Nordfrost elder slowly removed his hood.
His voice trembled.
"I've never seen it with my own eyes..."
Lirion followed the distant glow.
"The Borealis Relay."
Sorion held the bronze compass.
Its needle no longer searched.
It pointed unwaveringly toward the distant light.
The forgotten city was no longer a legend.
It was waiting.
Ending
High above the expedition...
hidden upon a ridge of crystal ice...
a solitary figure watched in silence.
Clad in armor of shimmering frost and white steel, the unknown guardian lowered a long spear etched with glowing Borealis runes.
Beside them stood a magnificent white wolf with crystal-blue eyes.
The guardian spoke softly.
"They crossed the Frostwind Pass..."
The wolf looked toward the travelers below.
Then back toward the frozen citadel.
Without another word...
guardian and wolf vanished into the swirling snow.
The expedition never knew they had been seen.
But Borealis now knew exactly who was coming.
