Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 38 — The Empress Dowager’s Second Test

The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of magnolia blossoms.

Lin Yue stood in her courtyard, reviewing a report Bai Rui had prepared.

Her attendants moved with quiet efficiency — a reflection of her growing authority.

Ming He approached with a bow.

"My Lady, a summons has arrived from the Empress Dowager."

Lin Yue nodded calmly.

"Prepare my cloak."

Xiao An stepped forward, offering it with steady hands.

No questions.

No fear.

Just loyalty.

Lin Yue draped it over her shoulders and walked toward the Phoenix Hall, her steps unhurried.

She knew this summons was not casual.

The Empress Dowager never acted without purpose.

The Phoenix Hall

The hall was dim, lit only by a few lanterns.

The Empress Dowager sat at the center, her expression unreadable.

The Empress stood beside her, composed and observant.

Lin Yue bowed deeply.

"Greetings, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager gestured for her to rise.

"Lin Yue," she said, "I have heard much about you these past days."

Lin Yue kept her gaze lowered.

"I hope it has not troubled Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager's lips curved slightly — not a smile, but something close.

"Troubled? No. Intrigued? Yes."

Lin Yue remained silent.

The Empress Dowager continued,

"You handled the rumor well. You handled Xue's gifts well. And you handled the emperor's attention… with restraint."

Lin Yue's heartbeat quickened, but her face remained serene.

"I only act as I believe proper."

The Empress Dowager leaned forward slightly.

"And what do you believe is proper?"

Lin Yue met her gaze — calm, steady, respectful.

"To remain true to myself," she said softly.

"To act with dignity.

To protect those under my care.

And to never forget my place."

The Empress Dowager studied her for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

"Good. Because today, I will test that."

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"I am prepared."

The Empress Dowager clapped her hands.

Two palace maids entered, dragging a trembling servant between them — a young girl, pale and terrified.

"This maid," the Empress Dowager said, "was caught stealing from the imperial storeroom."

Lin Yue's eyes flickered,

The Empress Dowager continued,

"She claims she did it because she was threatened. She claims someone in the harem forced her."

Lin Yue understood immediately.

This was not about the maid.

This was about her.

The Empress Dowager's voice sharpened.

"Lin Yue, I want you to question her."

Lin Yue blinked — surprised, but only for a moment.

"Me, Your Majesty?"

"Yes," the Empress Dowager said. "Show me how you judge. Show me how you lead."

The Empress watched quietly, curious.

Lin Yue stepped forward, her expression calm.

The maid trembled.

"My Lady… please… I didn't want to—"

Lin Yue raised a hand gently.

"Do not fear. Speak clearly."

The maid swallowed hard.

"I… I was told to steal the silk. If I didn't, they said they would blame me for breaking a vase."

Lin Yue's voice remained soft.

"Who threatened you?"

The maid hesitated — terrified.

Lin Yue's eyes softened.

"You will not be punished for telling the truth."

The maid burst into tears.

"It was… it was a maid from the Orchid Palace…"

The hall fell silent.

The Empress Dowager's expression darkened.

Lin Yue bowed slightly.

"Your Majesty, this girl acted out of fear, not greed. She should not be punished harshly."

The Empress Dowager tapped her fan thoughtfully.

"And what of the one who ordered her?"

Lin Yue's voice was calm, but firm.

"Punish the one who abuses power, not the one who suffers under it."

The Empress Dowager's eyes sharpened — impressed.

"And what of Noble Consort Xue?"

Lin Yue bowed her head.

"I do not accuse without proof. But I do not ignore patterns."

The Empress Dowager leaned back, studying her.

"You are cautious," she said. "But not blind."

Lin Yue remained silent.

The Empress Dowager finally waved her hand.

"Very well. The maid will be spared. The Orchid Palace will be investigated."

Xue would not escape this easily.

The Empress Dowager looked at Lin Yue again.

"You have passed my test."

Lin Yue bowed deeply.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

The Empress Dowager's voice softened — just slightly.

"You are becoming someone the palace must watch closely."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze.

"I only wish to serve with integrity."

The Empress Dowager smiled faintly.

"And that," she said, "is why you are dangerous.

Outside the Hall

Bai Rui approached immediately.

"My Lady, how did it go?"

Lin Yue walked slowly, her expression thoughtful.

"The Empress Dowager tested my judgment."

"And you passed," Bai Rui said confidently.

Lin Yue didn't answer.

Xiao An stepped forward quietly.

"My Lady… are you troubled?"

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No. I am simply aware."

"Of What?"

Lin Yue looked toward the magnolia tree in the distance.

"That the Empress Dowager is no longer testing my survival," she said softly.

"She is testing my potential."

Later That Night

The emperor arrived, his expression tense.

"I heard the Empress Dowager summoned you."

Lin Yue nodded.

"She tested me."

"And?"

Lin Yue met his gaze.

"She is watching me more closely now."

The emperor stepped closer, his voice low.

"She should. You are becoming someone extraordinary."

Lin Yue looked away.

"Extraordinary women do not survive easily in the palace."

He gently took her hand.

"Then I will make sure you do."

Her heart trembled — but she remained composed.

"You cannot protect me from everything."

"No," he said softly. "But I can stand with you."

Lin Yue looked up at him — calm, steady, quietly moved.

"Then stand," she whispered. "And I will stand with you."

The emperor's eyes softened with something deep and unspoken.

And in that moment, beneath the lantern light, Lin Yue felt something shift.

Not fear.

Not uncertainty.

Strength.

And the beginning of something she could no longer deny.
