The palace was quiet, but Lin Yue could feel the tension in the air.
Xiao An paced nervously. "The Empress Dowager has summoned you."
Lin Yue looked up. "Why?"
"She didn't say," Xiao An whispered. "But… no one refuses her."
Lin Yue stood slowly, smoothing her sleeves. "Then I won't."
Xiao An grabbed her hand. "Be careful. The Empress Dowager is not like the Empress. She doesn't scream. She doesn't threaten. She just… watches."
Lin Yue nodded. "I'll be fine."
But her heart beat faster.
The Phoenix Hall
The Empress Dowager's residence was grand, silent, and cold.
Servants bowed deeply as Lin Yue entered, their eyes avoiding hers.
She was led to a private chamber where the Empress Dowager sat on a raised platform, dressed in deep crimson robes embroidered with phoenixes. Her hair was silver, her gaze sharp.
Lin Yue bowed. "Greetings, Your Majesty."
The Empress Dowager studied her for a long moment. "You are Lin Yue."
"Yes."
"You are the one my son favors".
Lin Yue hesitated. "He has been kind to me."
The Empress Dowager's lips curved slightly. "Kindness is not love. And love is not protection."
Lin Yue said nothing.
The Empress Dowager continued, "Do you know what happens to women who rise too quickly in this palace?"
Lin Yue met her gaze. "They fall."
"Exactly," the Empress Dowager said. "And they fall hard."
She stood slowly, walking down the steps with regal grace.
"You have no family. No allies. No history. You appeared out of nowhere, and now you live in the emperor's private quarters."
Lin Yue kept her voice steady. "I did not ask for that."
"But you accepted it," the Empress Dowager said. "And that makes you dangerous."
Lin Yue's fingers curled slightly. "I am not a threat."
The Empress Dowager stopped in front of her. "You are. Whether you intend to be or not."
She leaned in, voice low.
"The harem hates you. The court fears you. And I… am watching you."
Lin Yue's breath trembled, but she didn't look away.
"I understand," she said.
The Empress Dowager studied her again. "You are calm. That is good."
She turned away, then paused.
"One last thing," she said. "If you truly care for my son… do not let him destroy himself over you."
Lin Yue's heart clenched. "I would never—"
"You already are," the Empress Dowager said. "He ignores ministers. He defies tradition. He breaks rules."
She looked back.
"All for you."
Lin Yue bowed deeply. "I will be careful."
The Empress Dowager nodded once. "See that you are."
Later That Night
Lin Yue sat in the emperor's chamber, staring at the moon.
When he entered, she stood.
"You saw her,"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"She warned me."
He walked to her, his expression unreadable. "Are you afraid?"
Lin Yue looked up at him, her voice calm.
"No."
He studied her face, then smiled faintly.
"Good."
He reached out, brushing her cheek.
"You're changing," he murmured.
"I have to," she said.
He leaned in, voice low.
"Let them fear you."
Her heart pounded.
And for the first time, she didn't feel like a guest in the palace.
She felt like a player.
