Chapter 54 - The Truth They Could No Longer Hide

The afternoon sun filtered through the towering windows of the Larento mansion, bathing the study in a soft golden glow.

Dust danced lazily in the air, disturbed only by the gentle breeze slipping through the slightly opened window.

Stephanie wandered quietly around the room, her fingers trailing across rows of old books, antique ornaments, and family photographs that carried decades of memories.

The mansion felt strangely peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

As though it had been waiting years for this very moment.

Her hand stopped at an old wooden frame resting on one of the shelves.

The instant her eyes landed on the photograph, her entire body froze.

Her heartbeat skipped.

"...No..."

Her lips parted as she slowly lifted the frame into her trembling hands.

It was the same picture.

The same photograph she had secretly found years ago inside one of her mother's old storage boxes.

A young man stood proudly beside a breathtakingly beautiful woman.

His smile was warm.

Genuine.

In his arms rested a tiny baby wrapped in a cream-colored blanket, reaching her tiny fingers toward his face.

Stephanie's breathing became uneven.

"...That's me," she whispered, almost too softly to hear.

Madeleine looked up immediately.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

Stephanie couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.

"When I was little..." she began, her voice shaking, "I found this exact picture hidden inside one of my mom's old boxes."

She swallowed painfully.

"She didn't know I'd seen it."

Her fingers tightened around the frame.

"I used to wait until she wasn't home... then I'd secretly take it out and stare at it."

A sad smile touched her lips before disappearing.

"I kept wondering who the man holding me was."

Silence settled over the room.

"I asked my mom about my father so many times..."

Her voice cracked.

"But every single time... she'd change the subject."

Stephanie slowly pulled out her phone.

"I even took a picture of it years ago because... I was afraid she'd throw it away."

She opened the old image and handed the phone to them.

Henri stared at it for several long seconds.

His shoulders slowly slumped.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"That photograph was taken only a few days after you were born."

Madeleine smiled sadly through watery eyes.

"Your father couldn't stop smiling that day."

"He carried you everywhere."

"He wouldn't let anyone else hold you for long."

Stephanie looked down at the photograph again.

The man looked so proud.

So happy.

So loving.

For years she had imagined meeting him.

She had built an image of him in her mind...

A hero.

A good father.

Someone who would have loved her endlessly.

But something inside the room suddenly changed.

The silence became heavy.

Painful.

As though everyone was standing on the edge of a truth no one wanted to say aloud.

Henri exchanged a long glance with Madeleine before looking back at Stephanie.

His expression was filled with regret.

"Stephanie..."

His voice was calm.

But heavy.

"There are things about your father that we've hidden for many years."

Stephanie slowly lowered herself into the chair opposite them.

Her stomach tightened.

"...What kind of things?"

Madeleine reached across the table and gently held her hand.

"Your father loved this family."

"He worked tirelessly for the company."

"He was intelligent."

"Ambitious."

"He wanted to build something that would last for generations."

She paused.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But..."

"There was another side of him."

Stephanie frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Henri let out a slow, exhausted sigh.

"He had a terrible temper."

Stephanie's heart pounded.

"He hurt your mother."

The words crashed into her like a wave.

For several seconds...

She couldn't breathe.

"...What?"

Her voice barely came out.

"He abused her," Henri continued quietly.

"Physically."

Stephanie blinked repeatedly.

"No..."

"No..."

"My mom never told me that."

Madeleine gently squeezed her hand.

"She never would have."

"She wanted you to remember your father without carrying her pain."

Tears gathered in Stephanie's eyes.

Henri continued.

"We didn't know immediately."

"But when we found out..."

His jaw tightened.

"It was already happening behind closed doors."

Stephanie stared blankly ahead.

The smiling man in the photograph no longer looked the same.

Everything she'd imagined...

Everything she'd believed...

Was beginning to fall apart.

Madeleine took a shaky breath.

"There was something else your mother discovered."

Stephanie slowly looked up.

Henri hesitated.

Then quietly said,

"Your father had relationships with men."

The room fell silent.

Stephanie didn't speak.

Didn't blink.

She simply stared.

"He kept it hidden for years," Henri explained.

"But eventually..."

"Your mother found out."

Stephanie looked back at the photograph.

How could one picture hold two completely different versions of the same man?

The loving father she had dreamed about...

And the man who had broken her mother's heart.

Madeleine wiped away another tear.

"There was also another child."

Stephanie looked at her in confusion.

"...Another child?"

Madeleine nodded slowly.

"Before you."

Stephanie felt as though the air had been pulled from her lungs.

"Your mother became pregnant before she had you."

"But..."

"She lost the baby."

Stephanie covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

Henri lowered his eyes.

"The miscarriage happened after one of their worst fights."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"We've always believed the stress..."

"...and the violence..."

"...caused her to lose the baby."

Stephanie burst into tears.

The photograph slipped slightly in her hands as sobs escaped her lips.

"She went through all of that..."

"And I never knew..."

Madeleine stood immediately and wrapped her arms around her.

"She wanted to protect you."

"She wanted you to grow up without hating your father."

Stephanie cried against her shoulder.

"I spent my whole life wondering why she never talked about him..."

"I thought maybe she hated him..."

"I thought maybe he abandoned us..."

Madeleine gently stroked her hair.

"No, sweetheart."

"She was protecting your innocence."

After several minutes, Stephanie slowly wiped her face.

She looked once more at the smiling man in the photograph.

He had looked so perfect.

So gentle.

Appearances really could lie.

Henri leaned forward.

"When your father was killed..."

"We believe that was the moment your mother finally chose freedom."

"She took you..."

"And disappeared."

Stephanie nodded weakly.

After another long silence, she quietly asked,

"...Do you know who killed him?"

Henri slowly shook his head.

"No."

His expression darkened.

"He made many enemies through business."

"We always believed one of them was responsible."

"But..."

"We never found the truth."

Stephanie lowered her gaze.

Something inside her refused to settle.

There were still too many unanswered questions.

Too many missing pieces.

Madeleine gently took both of Stephanie's hands.

"We want to go to Los Angeles."

Stephanie looked up.

"We need to speak with your mother."

"There are answers only she can give."

Stephanie remained silent for several moments.

Then she nodded.

Slowly.

"I want that too."

"I think..."

"I'm finally ready."

Elsewhere inside the enormous mansion, Maya wandered through another luxurious hallway, peeking into room after room with childlike excitement.

One room displayed priceless paintings.

Another housed antique sculptures collected from around the world.

Her mouth fell open.

"This family is ridiculously rich."

She laughed to herself.

"If Stephanie doesn't move into this mansion permanently..."

She folded her arms dramatically.

"I volunteer as tribute."

Chuckling, she stepped onto one of the balconies overlooking the breathtaking gardens below.

She had no idea that, only a few rooms away...

Stephanie's entire world had just been turned upside down.

The father she had spent her whole life longing to know...

Was nothing like the man she'd imagined.

And soon...

They would all return to Los Angeles.

Where even darker truths were waiting.

And where Stephanie would finally come face to face...

With the mother who had carried those painful secrets alone for far too long.
