Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: First Clash

Chapter 16: First Clash

The air felt frozen.

Not cold—

but locked.

---

Students stood still around them, like statues trapped in time.

Only three people could move.

Emily.

Daniel.

Zara.

---

And the Hunter.

---

"Stay sharp," Zara muttered, stepping slightly forward. "This isn't like anything you've faced before."

---

The Hunter tilted its head.

Observing.

Calculating.

---

"Threat level…" it said in a low, mechanical tone.

"…increasing."

---

Emily's heart pounded.

"Yeah, I don't like the sound of that."

---

Daniel didn't respond.

His eyes were locked on the enemy.

Focused.

---

"Don't wait for it to attack," he said quietly.

---

Zara smirked.

"Wasn't planning to."

---

And in the next second—

she moved.

---

Fast.

---

Faster than Emily expected.

---

Zara dashed forward, her movement almost blurring—

then struck.

---

Her fist collided with the Hunter's chest—

---

A sharp shockwave burst outward.

---

BOOM.

---

The ground cracked beneath them.

---

Emily's eyes widened.

"…Okay, she's strong."

---

But the Hunter didn't fall.

---

It didn't even move.

---

Zara jumped back instantly, landing beside them.

---

"…Yeah," she muttered. "That's not normal."

---

The Hunter slowly turned its head toward her.

---

"Impact registered."

---

A pause.

---

"No damage."

---

Zara clicked her tongue.

"Annoying."

---

Suddenly—

it moved.

---

Gone.

---

Emily blinked.

"…Where—?!"

---

A loud crash echoed behind them.

---

Daniel blocked just in time—

his arm raised—

---

A ripple of invisible force forming as the Hunter's strike slammed into it.

---

CRACK.

---

The ground beneath Daniel split.

---

Emily's heart jumped.

"Daniel!"

---

"I'm fine," he said through clenched teeth.

But he was being pushed back.

---

"Move!" Zara shouted.

---

Emily didn't think.

---

She acted.

---

Closing her eyes for a split second—

she reached inward.

---

Not for the system.

---

For herself.

---

That warmth.

That calm.

---

She found it.

---

And held it.

---

Her eyes snapped open—

clear.

Focused.

---

"Hey!" she shouted.

---

The Hunter's head turned toward her.

---

Good.

---

She stepped forward.

---

"I'm your target, right?" she said.

---

Daniel's eyes widened slightly.

"Emily, don't—"

---

Too late.

---

The Hunter vanished again—

---

Reappearing directly in front of her.

---

Its hand shot forward—

---

But this time—

---

Emily didn't panic.

---

She didn't freeze.

---

She stood still.

---

Focused.

---

And the moment it touched her—

---

Something changed.

---

The impact—

---

…never landed.

---

The space between them distorted slightly.

---

Like reality itself… bent.

---

The Hunter paused.

---

"…Anomaly behavior confirmed."

---

Emily's breath trembled.

---

She felt it.

---

Not power like the system.

---

Not force.

---

But control.

---

Not over others—

---

But over herself.

---

"I'm not running," she said quietly.

---

Behind her—

Daniel moved.

---

Fast.

---

He struck from the side—

his energy colliding with the Hunter—

forcing it back this time.

---

Zara didn't hesitate.

---

"Now we're talking," she grinned.

---

She launched forward again—

this time aiming for its head.

---

The Hunter blocked—

but that created an opening.

---

"Emily!" Daniel called.

---

She understood instantly.

---

This time—

she didn't hesitate.

---

She stepped forward—

placing her hand against the Hunter's chest.

---

And instead of pushing—

---

She focused.

---

On stillness.

---

On presence.

---

On herself.

---

For a split second—

everything went silent.

---

Then—

---

The Hunter froze.

---

Completely.

---

"…What?" Zara blinked.

---

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"…She's interrupting it."

---

Emily's body trembled.

---

It wasn't easy.

---

But she held on.

---

Just a little longer.

---

"Now!" she gasped.

---

Zara didn't waste the chance.

---

She spun—

and delivered a powerful strike—

---

CRASH.

---

The Hunter was sent flying—

slamming into the ground across the courtyard.

---

Silence.

---

Emily dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

---

"…That worked."

---

Daniel helped her up quickly.

"Yeah… but not for long."

---

The Hunter slowly stood again.

---

Unharmed.

---

But this time—

---

It wasn't calm.

---

The air around it darkened.

---

"…Adaptation complete."

---

Zara's smile faded slightly.

"…That's not good."

---

The Hunter raised its hand—

and the space around it began to distort.

---

More violently than before.

---

"New protocol activated."

---

Its voice dropped—

lower.

More dangerous.

---

"Elimination."

---

Emily's heart sank.

---

"…Yeah," she whispered.

---

"This just got worse."
