Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Eaters

Chapter 9: The Eaters

Daniel didn't let go of her arm.

Not immediately.

His grip was firm — not hurting her, but grounding her.

"Tell me exactly what you saw," he said quietly.

---

Emily swallowed, trying to steady her breathing.

"It was behind you," she said. "Tall… not fully human. Like a shadow trying to look like a person."

Daniel's jaw tightened slightly.

"And it spoke to you?"

Emily nodded.

Her voice dropped.

"It said… it's what remains when people like me reach the end."

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

---

Daniel closed his eyes for a brief second.

Like he had been hoping she wouldn't say that.

---

"…Then it's worse than I thought," he muttered.

---

Emily's heart pounded.

"What is it?"

---

Daniel finally let go of her arm and stepped back slightly.

Not to create distance—

but like he needed space to explain something serious.

---

"They're called Eaters," he said.

---

The word felt wrong.

Like it didn't belong in a normal world.

---

"Eaters?" Emily repeated.

---

Daniel nodded.

"They're not human. Never were."

A pause.

"They exist outside… whatever this is."

He gestured slightly, meaning the world around them.

---

"They don't show up for everyone," he continued. "Only for people connected to systems."

Emily's chest tightened.

"Why?"

---

Daniel looked straight at her.

"Because systems attract them."

---

The words hit hard.

---

"They feed on what the system leaves behind," he added.

---

Emily's mind raced.

"What does that even mean?"

---

Daniel's voice dropped slightly.

"It means the system doesn't just take your emotions…"

A pause.

"It empties you."

---

Emily's breath slowed.

"And when there's nothing left?"

---

Daniel didn't hesitate this time.

---

"That's when the Eaters come."

---

A cold silence filled the space between them.

---

Emily shook her head slightly.

"No… no, that doesn't make sense. Why would something like that exist?"

---

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Because something created the systems."

---

That sentence changed everything.

---

Emily's eyes widened.

"You're saying… this isn't random?"

---

"No," Daniel said firmly. "It's not random."

A pause.

"It's a process."

---

Emily felt a chill run down her spine.

"A process for what?"

---

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

When he did—

his voice was quieter than before.

---

"I don't know."

---

That scared her more than anything else.

---

"But I know this," he continued. "The system isn't helping you."

"It's preparing you."

---

Emily's heart skipped.

"…For them?"

---

Daniel didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

---

Emily's thoughts spiraled.

"This is crazy… I didn't choose this…"

---

"You kind of did," Daniel said gently.

---

She looked at him sharply.

"What?"

---

"You said it yourself," he reminded her. "You wanted control."

A pause.

"And something answered."

---

The truth of that hit harder than she expected.

---

Emily looked down at her hands again.

They were still shaking.

---

"…Then how do I stop it?" she asked quietly.

---

Daniel was silent for a moment.

Thinking.

---

"From what I've seen…" he said slowly, "…there are only two ways."

---

Emily looked up quickly.

"What are they?"

---

Daniel met her eyes.

Serious.

Focused.

---

"First… you stop using the system completely."

---

Emily's chest tightened.

"That's it?"

---

Daniel shook his head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"That's the easy part."

---

Her stomach dropped.

"What's the second?"

---

Daniel hesitated.

For the first time—

he looked unsure.

---

"…You break it."

---

Emily frowned.

"Break it how?"

---

Daniel's expression hardened slightly.

---

"Before it finishes breaking you."

---

Silence.

---

The weight of his words settled heavily between them.

---

Behind Emily's thoughts—

something stirred.

---

System alert.

---

Her eyes widened slightly.

---

Host resistance increasing.

External influence detected.

---

The voice sounded colder now.

Sharper.

Less… human.

---

Warning.

---

Emily slowly lifted her head.

---

Because deep down—

she could feel it.

---

The system had heard everything.

---

And it wasn't going to let her go that easily.
