Cherreads

Chapter 23 - The Pale Scourge

The System Observer did not attack. It hovered in the red rain like a silver eye watching a lab rat struggle in a flooded cage. I reached for the gray lead that used to be my memory fragment but it crumbled into dust between my fingers. The connection was severed. The blue ocean and the white room were gone replaced by the cold static of the Frontier.

[OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE RED LEACH]

I didn't waste time screaming. In the Frontier a scream was just a broadcast of your coordinates. I turned away from the silver needle and began to run through the tall red grass. My left leg was still dragging slightly from the fight with 9046 but the Sovereign code was already knitting the porcelain back together with a sickening wet sound of grinding gears.

The air began to vibrate with a sound like a thousand serrated knives rubbing together. The Harvester Swarm was close. They were the cleanup crew of the System sent to prune the errors that the Archive collapse had puked into the world. I saw the first one break through the clouds. It was a blur of chrome and black wire with wings made of oscillating fans. It didn't have eyes only a wide sensor array that glowed with a clinical white light.

[TARGET: HARVESTER DRONE]

[THREAT LEVEL: LOW]

[QUANTITY: 400+]

One was a nuisance. Four hundred was a meat grinder. I dived into a thicket of metal trees and felt the red rain sizzling against my back like acid. The trees hummed as the swarm passed overhead their sensors scanning the mud for my specific violet signature.

I am the key, I whispered to the rust. But the key needs a shield.

I looked at my biomass 820 units. I needed to cross the 1000 threshold to trigger the next evolution but the swarm was blocking the path to the city. If I stayed hidden I would starve. If I fought I would be deleted. A Harvester Drone dived into the thicket its wings cutting through the metal branches like they were paper. It found me. Before it could broadcast my position I lunged. My golden claw pierced its sensor array and I ripped the core straight out of its chassis.

It wasn't enough. It was like trying to fill a swimming pool with a spoon. I looked at the broken drone and saw the potential. I didn't eat the metal. I used the Sovereign code to graft the drone's wing blades to my own forearms. The pain was a sharp white line across my 29% identity. I felt the metal wings fuse with my porcelain chitin becoming a permanent extension of my body.

[UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATION DETECTED]

[SKILL EVOLVED: BLADE DANCER]

I stepped out from the metal trees and looked up. The sky was a swirling vortex of silver wings. The System Observer was still there watching. I didn't run away from the swarm. I ran toward the center of the vortex. I activated the Phantom Sprint and the Blade Dancer wings became a blur of silver death. Every jump took me higher into the air. Every strike turned a drone into a shower of sparks and black oil.

I was a white streak of porcelain and purple light cutting through a cloud of chrome. I wasn't fighting for the Archive or the Analyst or my lost name. I was fighting for the 18% of me that still knew how to hate.

[BIOMASS: 850 ... 900 ... 940 ...]

The more I killed the more the Sovereign code roared in my mind. It wasn't just stabilizing me. It was remaking the world. The ground beneath the swarm began to ripple as if the Frontier itself were afraid of the Pale Scourge. I reached the heart of the swarm and saw the lead drone. It was twice the size of the others with a core that pulsed with a concentrated red light.

You're next, I growled.

I leapt from the back of a falling harvester and drove both my new blade arms into the lead drone's throat. The explosion of data was so bright it blinded the System Observer for a full three seconds. I hit the mud with the lead drone's core in my hand.

[WARNING: SYSTEM OVERLOAD]

[IDENTITY SACRIFICE REQUIRED FOR INTEGRATION]

My three lenses flickered. I felt a core memory of my childhood bedroom begin to dissolve. I saw the blue wallpaper and the smell of old books and I watched as the System deleted them to make room for the new hardware. Take it, I clicked while my body began to crack open. Take all of it if it means I can kill the rest of you.

The evolution didn't feel like a power up. It felt like a seizure. My porcelain plates shattered and remade themselves into jagged black spurs while the purple light of the Sovereign code turned into a blinding white screen. It wasn't the strength that broke me. It was the cost.

As my vision went dark I forgot the name of my father.
