Chapter 17 - The First Sacrifice

The moment Adrián picked it up, the ground shifted.

Not physically.

Structurally.

Paths that had been open suddenly weren't. Lines of movement tightened. Space compressed in ways that had nothing to do with distance.

The system had accepted the move.

Which meant it would now enforce the response.

Cognitive Overclock surged instantly.

Harder than before.

The pressure behind his eyes spiked sharp enough to almost break his focus.

Almost.

Adrián didn't look at the marker in his hand.

He was watching the field.

Watching them.

Three from the opposing faction moved at once.

Not toward him.

Around him.

Cutting angles.

Closing exits.

Too fast to be improvised.

Preplanned.

"Expected," Adrián said quietly.

Behind him, his group reacted slower.

Not because they were incapable.

Because they were waiting.

Still looking for direction.

That delay mattered.

"Left side, compress," Adrián said.

No hesitation.

No explanation.

Two followed immediately.

One didn't.

That one step difference created a gap.

Small.

But visible.

And the opponent saw it.

Of course he did.

The tall one shifted slightly.

Nothing dramatic.

Just enough.

And one of his pieces broke formation.

Straight toward the gap.

Adrián moved before impact.

Not to stop it.

To use it.

He stepped into the opening himself.

Forcing collision.

Bodies met.

Not violently.

But with intent.

The advancing player hesitated for half a second.

Didn't expect resistance there.

That half second was enough.

Adrián redirected him.

A push at the shoulder.

A shift in angle.

Not force.

Leverage.

The man stumbled sideways

Into his own teammate's path.

Disruption.

Micro.

But enough.

The formation broke.

Just for a moment.

Adrián stepped through.

Deeper into their side.

The observer's voice came from behind. "That's too far"

Yes.

It was.

That was the point.

The pressure in Adrián's head intensified.

Vision narrowing.

Details sharpening.

Everything reducing to movement and timing.

He was inside their space now.

Outnumbered.

Exposed.

And exactly where he needed to be.

The tall one watched him closely.

Not surprised.

Not rushed.

Calculating.

"Sacrifice," he said quietly.

Not to his group.

To Adrián.

Recognition.

Adrián didn't answer.

Because he was still moving.

A hand grabbed for him.

Too slow.

He slipped past.

Another tried to block.

Better positioning.

Adrián adjusted.

Lowered his center.

Shifted right.

Then forward again.

Not escaping.

Advancing.

Toward a specific point.

One of the opposing players froze.

Just for a fraction.

Eyes flicking toward the tall one.

Waiting.

That was it.

Dependency.

Adrián closed the distance instantly.

Grabbed his wrist.

Pulled.

Not to restrain.

To reposition.

The man lost balance.

Stepped wrong.

And suddenly

He was out of alignment with his own group.

Isolated.

Exposed.

Adrián released him immediately.

Stepped back.

Let the structure collapse around that single error.

The system reacted.

Faster now.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Positional Integrity Broken

The isolated player stiffened.

Realization hit too late.

His body locked.

Then dropped.

Dead.

No struggle.

No sound.

Just gone.

Silence rippled across both sides.

Adrián exhaled once.

Controlled.

Clean.

One move.

One piece.

Gone.

But

Something was off.

The reaction.

Too contained.

Too expected.

Adrián's eyes shifted immediately.

To the tall one.

He hadn't moved.

Hadn't reacted.

Hadn't even looked at the fallen player.

Instead

He was watching Adrián.

And then

He smiled.

Not satisfaction.

Confirmation.

Adrián's thoughts spiked.

Too smooth.

Too clean.

This wasn't a loss.

It was accepted.

Which meant

It was planned.

"Back," Adrián said instantly.

Sharp.

Urgent.

Different from before.

His group reacted this time.

Fast.

But not fast enough.

The counter came immediately.

Two from the opposing side broke formation.

Not toward Adrián.

Toward his group.

The gap he had created earlier

Still existed.

And now

It was wider.

The one who had hesitated before

Was still out of position.

Still unsure.

Target.

The observer moved to intercept.

Good instinct.

Wrong angle.

He was half a step off.

Adrián saw it.

Calculated.

Too far to correct.

Too late to stop.

The opposing player slipped past.

Clean.

Direct.

Contact.

The system triggered instantly.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Condition Violation Detected

The hesitant player froze.

Eyes wide.

Understanding crashing in.

Then

Gone.

Dead.

The field went silent again.

But this time

It wasn't controlled.

It was fractured.

Adrián stood still.

The marker still in his hand.

One trade.

One for one.

Equal.

On the surface.

But not in structure.

Not in timing.

Not in intent.

The tall one stepped forward slowly.

Finally closing distance.

"Good," he said.

Adrián didn't respond.

His mind was already moving.

Replaying.

Recalculating.

He had taken a piece.

Yes.

But he had also revealed something.

His range.

His method.

His willingness.

And the opponent

Had used that.

Perfectly.

"Now we understand each other," the tall one continued.

Adrián met his gaze.

Cold.

Focused.

"No," he said quietly.

"We just confirmed the opening"

A pause.

Then

The system flickered again.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Engagement Escalation: Active

The pressure in Adrián's head pulsed.

Stronger.

Sharper.

And for the first time since this began

The margin for error

Was gone
