Chapter 49 - Don’t Let It Know You See It

No one moved at first.

No one even trusted their own breathing.

Because the worst part wasn't the sound.

It was the absence of it.

Lucas opened his eyes slowly.

Carefully.

The room looked the same.

Same cracked walls. Same broken ceiling. Same dim light flickering like it could die at any second.

But it didn't feel the same.

Not even close.

— "Don't move too fast," the man said quietly.

Lucas didn't look at him.

— "Where is it?"

A pause.

Then—

— "Closer than before."

That didn't help.

Not even a little.

Emily's voice trembled.

— "I don't see anything…"

— "That's good," he replied immediately.

Lucas felt his chest tighten.

— "Why is that good?"

The man finally looked at him.

— "Because the moment you see it clearly…"

He stopped.

Lucas didn't like that.

— "What happens?"

Silence.

Too long.

— "It notices you."

That was enough.

More than enough.

Noah let out a breath.

— "Okay… great. So we just pretend it's not here?"

— "No," the man said.

— "Then what?!"

— "You stay aware… without acknowledging it."

Noah stared at him.

— "That makes zero sense."

— "It will."

Lucas slowly turned his head, scanning the room without focusing too hard on any one place.

That instinct—

Don't look directly.

Don't lock in.

He didn't know why…

But it felt right.

— "It reacts to attention," Lucas said.

The man nodded once.

— "Exactly."

Emily swallowed.

— "So if we look at it… it comes closer?"

— "Not just look," he replied.

A pause.

— "Recognize."

The word echoed.

Lucas felt something cold settle in his chest.

— "So we act like it's not real?"

— "No," the man said again.

— "You act like you don't understand it yet."

That was worse.

Because it meant—

It was waiting.

Noah shifted slightly.

— "I don't like this. I don't like any of this."

— "You don't have to like it," Ryan said.

All eyes turned to him.

Ryan was staring at the far wall.

Not focused.

But not unfocused either.

— "You just have to survive it."

Lucas studied him.

— "You're seeing something."

Ryan didn't answer.

That was the answer.

— "Ryan," Emily said carefully, "don't—"

— "I'm not," he replied quickly.

Too quickly.

Lucas stepped closer.

— "What do you see?"

Ryan's jaw tightened.

— "Nothing."

— "That's not true."

Silence.

— "Ryan."

He exhaled slowly.

— "Something moved."

The room froze.

— "Where?" Noah asked.

Ryan hesitated.

And that hesitation…

Was dangerous.

— "Behind you," he said quietly.

Lucas didn't turn.

Didn't even flinch.

That instinct kicked in again.

— "Don't react," he said.

Emily's grip tightened.

— "Lucas…"

— "Don't react."

The air felt heavier now.

Thicker.

Like something was shifting its position.

Slow.

Intentional.

— "It's testing us," the man said.

— "For what?" Noah asked.

— "To see who breaks first."

That landed.

Hard.

Because they all knew—

Someone would.

Eventually.

Emily closed her eyes for a second.

— "I can't do this…"

— "You can," Lucas said.

— "No, I—"

— "Emily."

His voice changed.

Softer.

But stronger.

— "Stay with me."

She nodded slightly.

Barely.

But enough.

And then—

A sound.

Right behind Lucas.

Not loud.

Not sudden.

Just—

Breathing.

Cold.

Close.

Too close.

Lucas felt his entire body tense.

But he didn't move.

Didn't turn.

Didn't react.

— "Lucas…" Noah whispered.

— "I know."

The man's voice came low.

Controlled.

— "Do not turn around."

Lucas didn't.

Even though every instinct screamed at him to.

— "It's right there," Ryan said quietly.

— "I said don't react," Lucas repeated.

His voice was tighter now.

More strained.

Because this—

This was different.

This wasn't above them anymore.

It was here.

With him.

— "Why him?" Emily whispered.

The man answered.

— "Because he saw it first."

That made sense.

And somehow…

That made it worse.

The breathing stopped.

Just like that.

Silence.

Lucas waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Nothing.

— "Is it gone?" Noah asked.

A pause.

Then—

— "No," the man said again.

Lucas exhaled slowly.

— "Then what changed?"

The man looked at him.

And for the first time—

There was something like warning in his voice.

— "It's closer."

Silence.

Lucas felt it.

Not behind him anymore.

Not above.

Not somewhere else.

Closer.

In a way that didn't make sense.

— "What does it want?" Emily whispered.

The man didn't hesitate this time.

— "To be understood."

The word hit differently.

— "That's not possible," Noah said.

— "It is."

— "How?"

The man looked at Lucas.

Only Lucas.

— "He's already started."

The room went still.

Lucas frowned.

— "What are you talking about?"

The man didn't answer.

Because Lucas already knew.

That feeling.

That connection.

That moment earlier—

When something in his mind shifted.

— "No…" Lucas whispered.

— "Yes."

Silence.

— "The more you remember…" the man continued,

— "…the closer it gets."

That was it.

The rule.

The real one.

Not looking wasn't enough.

Not reacting wasn't enough.

Understanding…

That was the trigger.

Lucas felt the weight of that settle in.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

— "Then we stop," Noah said quickly.

— "We stop remembering."

The man shook his head slowly.

— "You can't."

— "Why not?"

A pause.

And then—

— "Because it's already started."

The room fell silent.

Again.

But now—

It wasn't just fear.

It was inevitability.

🖤 Poem — Lucas

I tried not to see

what was right in my mind

but truth isn't something

you leave behind

and the more that I learn…

the less I'm blind
