Chapter 27 - Get In The Car

No one moved.

Not even a step.

The engine was still running.

Low.

Constant.

Like a warning.

"Lucas," the man said again.

Calm.

Too calm.

"We don't have time for this."

My chest tightened.

"Who are you?" I asked.

Even though…

I already knew.

He smiled slightly.

"That's not the question you should be asking."

Of course it wasn't.

"Then what is?" Noah snapped.

The man didn't even look at him.

His eyes stayed on me.

"Why are they already trying to silence you?"

Silence.

That hit.

Hard.

Because it was true.

"They attacked us," Emily said.

"What do you want?"

"A conversation."

"That's a lie," Ryan said coldly.

Finally—

The man looked at him.

And for a brief moment…

Something changed.

Recognition.

"You've grown," he said.

Ryan didn't react.

"I asked you something," Ryan continued.

"What do you want?"

A pause.

Then—

"I want to keep you alive."

Silence.

No one believed that.

"By chasing us?" Noah said.

"I wasn't chasing you," he replied.

"I was following the situation."

That made no sense.

"Explain," I said.

He took a step closer.

"Those men?" he said

"They don't work for me."

Everything froze.

"What?" Emily whispered.

"They're already moving faster than expected," he continued.

"Which means…"

A pause.

"…someone made a mistake."

My chest tightened.

"What mistake?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"You."

Silence.

Cold.

Heavy.

"You weren't supposed to remember this much," he said.

My heart started racing again.

"Remember what?"

He tilted his head slightly.

"Everything."

That word echoed.

Everything.

"You knew about the meeting," he continued.

"You found the files."

Flash.

My room.

Late night.

Searching.

Folders.

Hidden names.

My breath caught.

"I…" I whispered.

"You started digging," he said.

And suddenly…

It came back.

Fragments.

Not clear.

But enough.

"I saw something I wasn't supposed to," I said.

"Yes."

"And then…" I swallowed

"…I called him."

He nodded.

"That was your first mistake."

Silence.

"And the second?" I asked.

A pause.

Then—

"You didn't stop."

That hit harder than anything.

Because it was true.

"You think you're the first person to question this?" he said.

No answer.

"Or the first to try to expose it?"

My chest tightened.

"What happened to them?" Noah asked.

The man didn't answer right away.

Then—

"They disappeared."

Silence.

Emily stepped closer to me.

"Lucas…"

Fear.

Real fear.

"This isn't just about us," I said.

"No," the man replied.

"It never was."

Of course.

It never was.

"Then what is this?" I asked.

He looked at all of us now.

Not just me.

"All of you are connected," he said.

"Not by friendship…"

A pause.

"…but by design."

A chill ran down my spine.

"What does that mean?" Emily whispered.

"It means your families didn't just know each other," he said.

"They built something together."

We already knew that.

But hearing it like that…

Made it real.

"Built what?" Noah asked.

Silence.

Then—

"A system."

The word felt wrong.

Cold.

Calculated.

"A system of control," he continued.

"Information. Influence. Power."

My stomach turned.

"And we're part of it?" I asked.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

"From the moment you were born."

Silence.

Because now…

This wasn't just a secret.

This was a trap.

"And that night…" I said slowly

"…wasn't random."

"No," he replied.

"It was triggered."

By me.

I already knew.

"You got too close," he said.

"So they tried to erase it," Noah added.

"Yes."

"And failed," Ryan said.

The man looked at him.

"For now."

Silence.

Because that meant—

They weren't done.

Not even close.

"So what now?" Emily asked.

The man stepped back.

Opened the car door.

"Now," he said

"you get in."

No one moved.

Of course.

Because this felt wrong.

Very wrong.

"You expect us to trust you?" Noah said.

"No," the man replied.

A pause.

"I expect you to understand your options."

Silence.

"Stay here," he continued

"and they will find you again."

My chest tightened.

"Or come with me…"

A pause.

"…and maybe you live long enough to understand what this really is."

Emily looked at me.

Noah too.

Ryan stayed still.

Waiting.

For me.

Because now…

This was my decision.

And whatever I chose—

Would change everything.

I looked at the car.

Then back at him.

Then at them.

My friends.

Or whatever we were now.

"We don't have time," he said again.

No.

We didn't.

I took a step forward.

Then another.

And stopped right in front of the open door.

My heart was pounding.

Loud.

Unstable.

And then—

I said:

"…we go together."

Silence.

Then—

One by one…

They followed.

Because now…

There was no turning back.

I stood at the edge

with nowhere to go

chased by a truth

I didn't know

and when the dark

opened its door

I stepped inside…
