Chapter 20 - Chapter 19: When You Finally See It

Ji-hoon couldn't focus.

Not from the moment Seo-yoon walked back into the classroom.

Not from the moment he saw her eyes.

Not from the moment he realized something had changed.

He had seen her upset before.

Quiet.

Distant.

But not like this.

Not… broken.

His pen hovered over the page, unmoving.

The teacher's voice blurred into the background.

Nothing stayed.

Because his attention kept drifting.

Back to her.

Seo-yoon didn't look up once.

Not during class.

Not when the teacher asked questions.

Not even when Min-chae whispered something to her.

She just nodded.

Responded when needed.

Stayed quiet.

Too quiet.

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened slightly.

Something was wrong.

And he knew it.

The bell rang.

The sound cut through the silence, signaling the end of class.

Students began packing their bags, chairs shifting, voices returning.

Seo-yoon moved quickly.

Faster than usual.

She stood up before most people had even finished.

Ji-hoon noticed.

Of course he did.

She walked toward the door.

Alone.

Min-chae called after her. "Seo-yoon—"

"I'll be back," she said quickly.

And then she was gone.

Ji-hoon stood up immediately.

He didn't think.

Didn't hesitate.

He just followed.

Min-chae watched him go, her expression knowing.

Like she had been waiting for this.

The hallway was quieter in that part of the building.

Seo-yoon walked quickly, her steps uneven, her breathing slightly unsteady.

She didn't know where she was going.

She just needed space.

Somewhere quiet.

Somewhere she could think.

Or not think at all.

She turned a corner

And stopped.

Because she wasn't alone anymore.

"Seo-yoon."

She froze.

That voice.

She didn't turn immediately.

Didn't move.

For a second, she just stood there, her back to him.

"Wait," Ji-hoon said.

His voice was softer this time.

Not distant.

Not calm.

Different.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Then turned.

He was standing a few steps away.

Looking at her.

Really looking.

Not avoiding.

Not pretending.

Just… there.

"What?" she asked.

Her voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

Ji-hoon frowned slightly.

"You left."

"So?"

"So that's not normal."

Seo-yoon let out a quiet breath. "I just needed air."

He didn't move.

Didn't look away.

"You were crying."

The words landed softly.

But they didn't miss.

Seo-yoon's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

"I wasn't," she said.

"You were."

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

His voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

For the first time in days

He wasn't pretending.

Seo-yoon felt it.

And that made it worse.

"I said I'm fine," she repeated.

Ji-hoon took a step closer.

"That's not what it looked like."

"Then stop looking."

The words came out sharper than she intended.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Ji-hoon didn't step back.

"Something's wrong," he said.

Seo-yoon laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it wasn't.

"You noticed now?"

Ji-hoon's expression tightened slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Seo-yoon shook her head.

"Nothing."

"Seo-yoon."

"Just leave it."

"I'm not going to leave it."

"Why?" she asked suddenly.

The question came out before she could stop it.

Ji-hoon paused.

"…Because I can see it."

Seo-yoon's eyes stung.

She looked away quickly.

"Then you should've seen it earlier."

The words were quiet.

But they hit harder than anything else she had said.

Ji-hoon didn't respond immediately.

Because he knew.

He knew she was right.

Seo-yoon exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself.

"I told you," she said, her voice softer now. "He confessed."

Ji-hoon's gaze didn't leave her.

"I know."

"And you said it's my decision."

"It is."

Seo-yoon nodded.

Once.

Slowly.

"Yeah," she said. "It is."

Her hands clenched slightly at her sides.

Her breathing became uneven again.

She tried to steady it.

Tried to hold it in.

But it was harder this time.

Because he was here.

Because he was looking at her.

Because he was finally paying attention

When it was already too much.

"I didn't want it to be," she said.

Ji-hoon frowned. "What?"

"My decision."

Her voice cracked.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"I didn't want you to say that."

Ji-hoon's chest tightened.

Seo-yoon shook her head, her vision blurring again.

"I wanted you to care," she whispered.

The words hung between them.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

Real.

Ji-hoon didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Because he didn't know how to respond to that.

Not without saying everything.

Seo-yoon let out a shaky breath.

"And now you're here," she said. "Asking me what's wrong."

Her lips pressed together, trying to stop the tremble.

"It's too late."

The tears came again.

This time

She couldn't stop them.

She turned away quickly, her hand coming up to wipe them, her shoulders shaking slightly.

"I didn't want you to see this," she said.

But he already had.

Ji-hoon took another step forward.

Closer now.

Close enough to reach her.

But he didn't touch her.

Not yet.

He hesitated.

Because this

This was the line.

The one he had been avoiding.

The one he didn't want to cross.

Because once he did

There was no going back.

Seo-yoon wiped her eyes again, her breathing uneven.

"Just go," she whispered.

Ji-hoon didn't move.

Not this time.

Because now

He had seen it.

And he couldn't pretend it didn't matter anymore.
