Chapter 21. Charms Class
"I never expected you to be sorted into Slytherin. To be honest, I thought you'd be in the same house as us. Even if you weren't, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff would have been good fits for you. Of course, I'm not saying Slytherin is bad. You should know that some of the people in Slytherin are..." "
A bit arrogant." Lynn finished what he was about to say, whether it was George or Fred, I couldn't tell.
"Yes," the other Weasley said. "We just met you too, but we don't think you're the kind of person who looks down on others."
Lynn tilted his head and thought for a moment. "Actually, it's not that they're arrogant. They're just a little haughty, and their way of making friends is just different."
He smiled at the Weasley brothers. "What's wrong? Are you going to break off our friendship because I'm in Slytherin?"
The twins exchanged a glance, then looked at Lynn together and said loudly, "Of course not! Don't forget, Mum told us to take care of you at school before she left."
Lynn shrugged. "So why do you care so much about which house I'm sorted into? As long as we get along, we can still be friends."
"You're right. We should apologize for what we said earlier," the Weasley brothers said, winking and making faces, but they didn't seem to be sincere in their apology.
They also had classes in the morning, so they didn't chat much. After agreeing to visit Hogwarts Castle together next time, they parted ways.
Lynn sat down at the Slytherin table, where several upperclassmen were already seated. They greeted Lynn, having met him at the opening banquet the previous night.
Betty, the prefect, frowned. "You're the first of all the new students here today. I wonder how many will be late for Charms class. Professor Flitwick, though usually mild-mannered, hates students who aren't punctual."
Breakfast wasn't as lavish as yesterday's dinner, but the oatmeal porridge suited Lynn's taste perfectly.
"They should all know their limits; in another week or two, they'll probably get used to waking up early."
The prefects at Hogwarts weren't babysitters for the young wizards; they weren't obligated to care about every little detail for the new students. Betty grumbled once, then didn't nag any further. She glanced at the bowl of oatmeal porridge in Lynn's hand and casually remarked,
"The house-elves at Hogwarts seem to have changed their menu recently. I've never seen this kind of porridge for breakfast before."
As she spoke, Lynn had already finished the porridge.
"Really? Well, their cooking is pretty good. It tastes almost as good as what I make myself."
Betty rolled her eyes, witnessing Lynn's shamelessness for the first time.
The prefect's words soon proved true.
In the Charms classroom, Professor Flitwick, standing on a high stack of books, tapped the podium frequently with his fingertips, his expression unfriendly.
Three minutes had passed before class was scheduled to begin, and five young wizards were still missing from the classroom.
The Slytherin and Ravenclaw students who were already there sat huddled at their desks like quails.
Everyone could see that Professor Flitwick was in a bad mood.
Just as the professor's patience was about to run out, four Slytherins and one Ravenclaw student rushed into the classroom in a panic.
"Professor...we actually had a good idea of the time, it was those stairs going upstairs, they were playing tricks on us..."
one student tried to explain, but Professor Flitwick glared at them impatiently.
"Shut up! You've already wasted three minutes of everyone's time. Now get back to your seats immediately. Whether it's in my class or another professor's class, I don't want this to happen again!"
This reprimand, without any further punishment, made the five feel like they'd been granted a reprieve, and they hurriedly ran to their seats.
After Professor Flitwick saw that they were all ready, he cleared his throat and began the first lesson of Charms.
"Wizarding magic has developed over thousands of years, and the number of known spells is now countless. But no matter how magic develops, it can't escape the two main categories: Charms and Transfiguration Charms.
Before we learn specific Charms, I must first teach you how to distinguish between Charms and Transfiguration Charms. This won't affect your spellcasting, but it's a fundamental theory that every wizard must know.
Now, who can tell me the difference between Charms and Transfiguration Charms as you know them?"
Almost the instant Professor Flitwick finished speaking, Lynn raised his arm high.
The professor, who supposedly had goblin blood, seemed somewhat surprised; he had expected the question to be met with silence from the new students.
"Then, Mr. Bellok, you will answer this question."
Lynn stood up from his seat: "Charms add specific attributes to an object or creature, while Transfiguration Charms transform it into something completely different."
Professor Flitwick was quite surprised by Lynn's answer.
"Very well said, that's the most standard answer. You even read the entire book's excerpt?"
"Yes, Professor." Lynn's face showed no hint of pride, because as far as he knew, there was another young wizard sitting here who had read the entire Charms textbook even more diligently than him—the Ravenclaw freshman he met on the train.
He just hadn't raised his hand or shown any intention of answering the question.
Lynn continued calmly,
"I remember the excerpt also explained that curses, poisons, and curses, while belonging to the category of spells, are collectively called Dark Charms. The Standard Spells series doesn't cover these types of spells."
"Excellent," Professor Flitwick praised. "You're the first freshman I've ever seen who read the entire book before class, without even skipping the excerpts. Slytherin, five points!"
[You have received sincere praise from Charms Professor—Felius Flitwick, General Charms Talent +1, General Charms Effect +1.] [
Your outstanding performance in Charms class has earned you points for your school from Professor Felius Flitwick: General Charms Talent +1, General Charms Effect +1.]
Two consecutive system notifications stunned Lynn.
It turned out that it wasn't just praise; adding points to one's school could also improve magical talent.
"You can sit down, Mr. Bellok."
Only after Professor Flitwick's urging did Lynn snap out of his daze and sit back down.
After the initial shock, he quickly calmed down.
Improving magical talent couldn't be so easy; after all, the total cap was only 10. If a single praise and point addition could grant one point, wouldn't he become a magical prodigy in less than a month?
Sure enough, Lynn's guess was correct.
After Professor Flitwick began formally teaching them the Levitation Charm, Lynn's excellent performance once again earned his attention and high praise.
However, this time the system didn't announce any increase in magical talent.
This proves that the praise and bonus points from each professor are actually one-time rewards; in other words, he can only earn a maximum of two talent points from professors across all courses.
