Chapter 6 - A final gasp

The obsidian wastes stretched toward a horizon that seemed to retreat with every agonizing step, a vast expanse of basaltic plains and jagged volcanic glass that shimmered under the pale, dying light of a distant sun. This was a land where the laws of thermodynamics felt reversed, where the environment actively sought to strip a man of his kinetic energy. Lifeless was running for his life. Each stride was a calculated risk against the treacherous terrain. The ground here was composed largely of scoria and vesicular basalt, rock formations created by the rapid cooling of low viscosity lava, leaving behind a surface as sharp as a serrated razor.

Behind him, the Synaptic Myriad was chasing him in this cold place. To understand the Myriad is to understand the terrifying peak of predatory evolution. These creatures possess a decentralized nervous system, much like the cephalopods of Earth's ancient oceans, but amplified by a skeletal structure reinforced with biological ceramics. Their brains are not housed solely in a cranium; rather, neural clusters are distributed throughout their limbs, allowing for reaction times measured in milliseconds. The creature chasing Lifeless was a marvel of biological engineering, its many jointed legs clicking against the permafrost like the hammers of a thousand rifles.

The atmosphere in this desolate reach was a cocktail of nitrogen and trace amounts of argon, with oxygen levels so precarious they hovered near the threshold of human consciousness. As Lifeless pushed his body further, he entered a state of severe metabolic acidosis. His cells, deprived of sufficient oxygen for aerobic respiration, turned to glycolysis, producing an abundance of hydrogen ions. The burning sensation in his quadriceps was more than just fatigue; it was the chemical protest of a body reaching its structural limits. Yet, as he kept running away from the monster, he noticed a big carved rock looming through the freezing fog.

It was a monolith of carved stone, standing nearly thirty feet high. Its surfaces were etched with geometric patterns that suggested a level of sophisticated masonry, perhaps the work of a culture that understood the precession of the equinoxes. The rock was composed of a dense, metamorphic schist, layered with veins of quartz.

Lifeless changed his ways and ran towards it thinking it might be a house, hoping for some sanctuary where the Myriad's massive frame could not follow.

As he reached the base of the ancient marker, he then noticed a black sword with open three lines protruding from a drift of frozen dust. He reached down with his left hand and grabbed it and ran again. The blade was a masterpiece of dark metallurgy, a longsword forged from a matte black substance that defied simple classification. The weight suggested a density far beyond that of standard transition metals, perhaps a composite of osmium and carbon nanotube reinforcement.

The three distinct lines were carved into the center of the blade, running from the cross guard to the tip, empty and expectant.

He began to be exhausted of running.

Adrenaline, a catecholamine produced by the adrenal glands, flooded his system, temporarily masking the systemic failure of his muscles. This hormone bound to his beta receptors, dilating his bronchioles and increasing his cardiac output to a frantic degree. He realized he could no longer run. The flight response had been exhausted; only the fight remained. He pivoted on the slick shale, he held his sword with his left hand and bellowed "it's time to die asshole" to the monster.

The monster attacked lifeless with a punch that sent lifeless on to a wall and injured his ankle. The monster did not hesitate, as it lacked the human capacity for ego.

It calculated the distance and launched a strike with its primary manipulator. The fist of the creature was a mass of hardened keratin and muscle, capable of generating force equivalent to a high speed collision. The kinetic energy was absorbed by his skeletal structure, leading to a Grade III sprain of his right ankle. The lateral ligaments, the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular, stretched beyond their elastic limit and tore. He slumped against the base of the rock, his jaw hanging at an awkward angle until he cracked his jaw and launched at the monster with the sword and hit it.

The sword didn't make any damage to the monster's skin it was like trying to stab through fine diamond. The skin of the Synaptic Myriad was composed of a biological lattice of hexagonal cells, a natural armor that functioned similarly to graphene. It was harder than any natural stone, a shield that rendered traditional bladed weapons useless. The sword vibrated in his left hand, the vibration traveling through his radius and ulna, leaving his arm numb as it bounced off the biological armor.

The monster grabbed lifeless and began tightening it's hand to get lifeless to be crushed and ready to eat. It lifted him effortlessly, the strength of its bicep muscles drawing on a high concentration of fast twitch fibers fueled by a highly efficient mitochondrial density. This was a slow, methodical crushing, a technique used by predators to liquify the internal organs of prey to make digestion easier. Lifeless began hitting it's hand trying to get out but it wouldn't let go it tightened it's hand even more breaking his left arm.

There was a sound like a dry branch snapping underfoot. His left humerus, the long bone of the upper arm, fractured under the immense torque. The jagged ends of the bone shifted beneath his skin, threatening to sever the brachial artery.

Lifeless screamed from pain but there was no Time to do anything he bellowed "YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!!!!" and a green current launched from his body to the monster's eye temporarily blinding it and putting it in pain.

This was a massive bioelectric discharge, a phenomenon where the body's cellular membranes suddenly reverse their polarity, releasing stored electrochemical energy in a single, focused burst. The current followed the shortest path to the monster's most vulnerable point, its central ocular cluster. The moisture on the creature's eyes acted as a perfect conductor. Thousands of volts surged through the Myriad's optic nerves and into its primary neural hub. The monster let go of lifeless.

Lifeless hit the ground hard, his injured ankle screaming in protest. He wanted to run but his ankle didin't. He tried to crawl, his breath coming in shallow, sobbing gasps. He knew he didn't have much time. The monster got it's vision and grabbed lifeless by the throat trying to choke him. It shook its massive head, its charred eyes already beginning to heal through a process of rapid cellular mitosis. It reached out again, its movements slower but more deliberate, as it hoisted him into the air for the final time.

The pressure on his larynx was absolute. As his airway collapsed, his brain entered a state of cerebral ischemia. Those synaptic myriads are as intelligent as a human. Just not able to talk. He was seconds away from brain death. His eyes began to roll back, his vision tunneling until all he could see was the emerald glow of his own energy reflected in the monster's dark eyes. Lifeless was done.

"one.... more..... Thing...." Lifeless talked while not being to breath.

He gathered every remaining joule of energy within his body. He focused it not outward, but downward, into the weapon. Green current launched from his body to the sword filling its open lines with current. The sword was a resonant cavity for bioelectric energy. As the current filled the grooves, the blade began to vibrate at a frequency of several hundred thousand cycles per second.

This ultrasonic vibration turned the edge of the sword into a molecular saw, capable of disrupting the atomic bonds of any material it touched.

"I'm right handed asshole" he screamed his last breath and stabbed the monster right in it's heart killing it instantly with his dominant hand. The diamond hard skin of the Myriad, which had previously deflected his left handed strikes, parted like water. The sword slid through the creature's sternum and into its primary heart, a multi chambered organ that functioned as the engine for its entire biology. The ultrasonic energy caused the heart to undergo cavitation, the rapid formation and collapse of vapor bubbles that tore the tissue apart from the inside out.

The Myriad froze, its entire body quivering as its life force was extinguished in a single, violent pulse. Its grip on Lifeless's throat went limp, and the massive creature collapsed, falling onto the frozen basalt with the finality of a felled oak. He falled on the ground finally gasping for a breath. The atmosphere felt thick and rich now, every molecule of oxygen a gift. He pulled his sword out the monster's chest finally tasting victory in the silent, obsidian cold of the wastes.
