Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Sun is So Bright Today!

Inside the Magic Council;

"Snore... Zzz... oh, my Little Shasha... oh, my Little Mira... mwah, give me a kiss." Chen Fan sat in the defendant's seat, fast asleep. A snot bubble expanded and contracted at his nostril as he talked in his sleep, driving the councilors on the platform nearly to the point of exploding with rage.

However, there were exceptions. Siegrain rested his chin on his palm, looking at Chen Fan with a playful glint in his eyes before glancing at the other councilors. Ultear also watched Chen Fan with a smile,

though a closer look would reveal her eyes weren't actually focused; she was clearly lost in her own thoughts. There was also a short, stout old man watching Chen Fan with a gentle smile, looking at him as if he were his own grandson.

"Um, Mr. Chen Fan, you wouldn't happen to be asleep, would you?" a Messenger Frog asked, looking at him.

Pop!

The snot bubble on Chen Fan's nose burst, and his eyes snapped open. With an incredibly serious expression, he declared, "How could that be? How could I possibly be sleeping here? Have any of you ever seen someone who talks while they sleep?"

Who would admit to that? Admitting it would be the same as admitting he talked in his sleep.

"Chen Fan, stop being unreasonable. Where is Master Makarov? Why didn't he come?" Michello asked.

At the mention of that, Chen Fan grew even more irritated. "Who knows where that old bastard went to die?" his tone was sharp and aggressive.

It turned out that as soon as Makarov finished announcing that Chen Fan would be the next Master, he immediately faked an illness. He dumped the entire mess into Chen Fan's lap, grandly claiming it was "training for the next Master." The old man had even squeezed out a few crocodile tears, making everyone in the guild think Chen Fan was bullying the elderly.

Erza and Mira had been glaring at him ever since. He wasn't sure if they were mad at him on behalf of Master Makarov, or if they were still angry about hearing that Chen Fan had been carrying Lucy.

With no other choice, Chen Fan had to come here, and he was still fuming.

"Fine, fine. If you have something to say, say it to me. I've set my stage today, so bring whatever you've got at me," Chen Fan said arrogantly, leaning back in his chair. Naturally, it was his own custom cowhide seat, and he even propped his feet up on the railing in front of him.

"Don't be so arrogant! This is the Magic Council, and you are in the defendant's seat. Do not forget your status!" the same man Chen Fan had taught a lesson to previously shouted once again.

Chen Fan dug into his ear with a finger, then flicked it away casually without even looking. "Whose dog is this? Why aren't they controlling it? Why is it just letting out farts everywhere?" His attitude was insufferably cocky. He didn't even consider the fact that the dog he was referring to was technically his own superior.

"Pfft!" Ultear accidentally let out a laugh. Her voice was like a nightingale's, incredibly pleasant to the ear. It had to be said that Ultear was a stunningly beautiful woman. Without that fake mask of a smile, and radiating such a pure laugh, Chen Fan found himself staring in a daze.

Hearing the laughter, the others turned their gaze toward Ultear. Realizing her slip, she quickly covered her mouth. Chen Fan also snapped out of it, turning his gaze back and reassuming his indifferent mask.

The man's face turned livid, and several others looked none too pleased, but they all turned their heads back. Only Siegrain gave Ultear and Chen Fan a meaningful look, though he quickly hid his expression behind his usual smile.

"Chen Fan, do not be so arrogant. Your crimes this time are too great. Even though Phantom Lord instigated the war, you killed too many people. You were more ruthless than those Dark Guilds. You cannot escape responsibility," Michello said.

Hearing Michello's words, Chen Fan lowered his feet. Swish... Chen Fan's figure vanished, reappearing an instant later atop Michello's desk.

Chen Fan squatted on the desk, looking directly into Michello's eyes. "As those who instigate a war, they should be prepared to die at any moment," he said plainly. As he spoke, Chen Fan reached out and stroked Michello's snowy white beard. His words sent a cold sweat running down the backs of everyone present.

Facing Chen Fan's blatant murderous intent, Michello did not back down. Instead, he stared back and asked, "Are you threatening me?"

Chen Fan let go of Michello's beard. Swish... He returned to the defendant's seat, propping his feet back up as if nothing had happened. If the cold sweat on their backs hadn't been real, they would have thought it was a mere hallucination.

Chen Fan waved his hand dismissively. "There, there, don't be so serious." Suddenly, his face darkened. "I didn't keep killing them, did I? I've already been quite merciful. They should be thanking me."

Then, his face broke into a brilliant smile again. "Anyway, let's not talk about things that hurt our feelings. Let's discuss how to handle this incident between Fairy Tail and Phantom Lord." He finally lowered his feet.

Michello and the others exchanged bewildered looks. They had originally planned to use this opportunity to crush Chen Fan's ego, but they were caught completely off guard by his rapid-fire mood swings. They blinked at each other before finally reaching an agreement. Michello spoke on their behalf, "Very well. Then let us discuss how Fairy Tail will be handled in this incident."

About half an hour later, Chen Fan pushed open the doors to the trial room and walked out looking like he was walking on air, leaving a group of livid councilors behind him.

He raised a hand to block the piercing sunlight, looked up at the sky, and said playfully, "Oh, the sun is so bright today! It's blinding enough that even my own mother wouldn't recognize me." With that, he skipped away.

His voice reached the ears of the councilors, turning their already livid faces a shade of black.
