Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 : The Heist — Part 1

The surveillance scope painted green shadows across William's face as he watched the villa's eastern gate.

11:07 PM. The guards had completed their rotation eight minutes ago—another twenty-two minutes before the next patrol. The parking area beyond the security checkpoint held six vehicles, most belonging to staff who worked the night shift in the underground labs.

One car was different. A black Alfa Romeo, polished and expensive, with the kind of personalized plates that announced their owner's ego to the world: VITALE-1.

[TARGET: Dr. Marco Vitale]

[STATUS: Currently inside facility]

[PATTERN ANALYSIS: Historical data shows Vitale leaves facility between 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM on non-emergency nights. Drives to Bar Marinello in Positano (23km). Drinks alone for 2-3 hours. Returns or takes taxi depending on consumption.]

[TONIGHT'S PROBABILITY: 78% departure within next 20 minutes]

The Professional's patience was absolute. William lay on the rocky outcropping above the service road, completely still, watching the gate through a scope that could count the threads on a guard's collar from three hundred meters.

At 11:14 PM, the Alfa Romeo's headlights came on.

[TARGET MOBILE]

[ROUTE PREDICTION: Coastal road to Positano, Bar Marinello]

[INTERCEPT WINDOW: 47 minutes (travel time plus establishment entry)]

William packed the scope, descended the cliff face via a path he'd mapped during reconnaissance, and reached his rental car in under four minutes. The engine started quietly. He pulled onto the coastal road, heading east, timing his arrival to coincide with Vitale's.

Bar Marinello was the kind of establishment that catered to professionals who wanted to drink without being bothered—dim lighting, private booths, a bartender who remembered faces but not conversations. William arrived seven minutes before Vitale, took a seat at the bar where he could watch the entrance, and ordered a whiskey he didn't intend to finish.

Vitale walked in at 11:51 PM.

He was older than his personnel file suggested—mid-fifties, silver hair cropped short, with the posture of someone who'd spent decades in uniform before transitioning to private security. His face was weathered but alert, scanning the room with professional habit before settling into a booth near the back.

[TARGET ASSESSMENT: Vitale is armed (holstered weapon, right hip). Combat training evident. Currently operating in relaxed mode but maintains situational awareness.]

[RECOMMENDATION: Avoid direct confrontation inside establishment. Intercept in parking area during departure.]

William nursed his whiskey and waited.

Over the next two hours, Vitale consumed four glasses of bourbon—enough to dull his reflexes, not enough to impair his movement. He spoke to no one except the waitress, tipped generously, and checked his phone twice without responding to whatever he saw there. A man drinking alone because the alternative was going home to an empty apartment.

"He has a gym membership he hasn't used in six months. I found that in Lucia's background check. A man who stopped taking care of himself but hasn't stopped working."

[OBSERVATION: User demonstrating humanizing awareness of target]

[ASSESSMENT: Humanization does not affect operational necessity. Vitale possesses required intelligence. Acquisition requires termination.]

[REMINDER: The Professional tier enables compartmentalization. Use it.]

At 1:47 AM, Vitale stood, left money on the table, and walked toward the exit.

William was already outside.

The parking lot was poorly lit—a single streetlamp casting yellow light across cracked asphalt, shadows pooling between the few remaining vehicles. Vitale's Alfa Romeo was parked near the back, isolated from the other cars by the kind of distance that suggested a man who didn't want door dings.

It also meant no witnesses.

William moved through the shadows with SHD 18 efficiency, positioning himself behind a delivery van that offered a clear sightline to Vitale's car. The suppressed pistol—a replacement for the Beretta he'd discarded in Paris, acquired through Lucia's contacts—sat heavy in his hand.

Vitale emerged from the bar, keys already in his palm, walking with the careful steadiness of someone who knew they'd had enough but not too much. His right hand stayed near his hip—habitual, not paranoid—ready to reach for the weapon he probably hadn't drawn in years.

"He's a security professional who built his career protecting people. Now he protects a bioweapon facility. And I'm about to kill him for the contents of his memory."

[OBSERVATION: User engaging in moral consideration]

[REMINDER: Vitale's death is required for virus acquisition. Virus acquisition serves user's strategic objectives. Moral consideration is unproductive.]

[COUNTER-OBSERVATION: The 40% is active. This is expected.]

Vitale reached his car. His key fob beeped. The door locks clicked open.

William stepped out of the shadows, pistol raised, and fired twice.

The suppressed shots sounded like heavy coughs—loud enough to hear, quiet enough to dismiss as a car backfiring or a door slamming. Vitale's body jerked, then crumpled against the Alfa Romeo's door, sliding to the asphalt with the graceless collapse of sudden death.

[TARGET ELIMINATED]

[SIN REGISTERED: MURDER OF NON-COMBATANT (TIER 3)]

[CONTEXT: Targeted assassination for intelligence acquisition]

[BASE SP: 85]

[MODIFIER: Hitman World Bonus x1.5]

[TOTAL SP EARNED: 127]

[CURRENT SP: 390]

[HUMANITY: 74 → 72 (-2)]

[SKILL ABSORPTION: Initiating...]

The absorption felt different this time—not the violent surge of Brandt's streetfighting or Fournier's firearm proficiency, but something cooler and more structured. Protocols, procedures, access codes, security algorithms. The rotating cipher for Wing C's access code crystallized in William's memory like frost forming on glass.

[SKILL ABSORBED: Lab Security Protocols (Silver)]

[CONTENTS: Ether Corporation security procedures, biometric bypass sequences, Wing C authorization code generation algorithm]

[WING C CODE (6 AM - 12 PM rotation): 7-7-DELTA-4-FOXTROT]

[COOLDOWN: 6 hours until next absorption possible]

William stood over Vitale's body, the new knowledge settling into place alongside everything else he'd stolen from the dead. Three kills now. Copenhagen had been duress—Engström's body screaming for survival. Brandt had been preemptive—eliminating a threat before it materialized. Fournier had been operational—acquiring a skill during the Paris chaos.

This was different. This was hunting a man for the contents of his skull.

[OBSERVATION: User kill progression follows expected Professional tier pattern]

[PATTERN: Duress → Preemptive → Operational → Targeted]

[ASSESSMENT: Each kill is easier than the last. This is optimal development.]

"Optimal. That's what it calls becoming a better murderer."

[CLARIFICATION: Efficiency is not the same as enthusiasm. User remains capable of moral consideration. This is healthy.]

The staging took twenty minutes.

William stripped Vitale's wallet, watch, and phone—making the scene look like a robbery gone wrong. He drove the Alfa Romeo to a coastal overlook two towns east, wiped it for prints, and set it on fire. The flames would destroy any forensic evidence while the remote location delayed discovery.

The bus back to Sapienza arrived at 3:14 AM. William sat in the back, surrounded by late-night workers and exhausted tourists, watching the Mediterranean coast scroll past the windows.

"Six hours. The heist window opens at 6 AM. I have everything I need."

[COUNTDOWN: 2 hours, 46 minutes until heist window]

[ABSORPTION COOLDOWN: 5 hours, 41 minutes remaining]

[47 ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 18-24 hours]

His phone buzzed. Voss, confirming that Rossi's documents were ready—new Italian passport, work history, financial records, a complete identity waiting at the hotel front desk under her name. The favor from Hamburg, finally spent.

William closed his eyes and let the bus carry him toward the most dangerous morning of his life.
