Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 : The Patsy — Part 1

Two phones lay on the hotel room desk—different burner models, different SIM cards, different conversations happening simultaneously.

William held the left phone to his ear while reading messages on the right.

"—and the ICA firewall architecture is actually quite sophisticated," Torres was saying, the comfortable slur of two drinks softening his consonants. "Most people think it's military-grade, but it's actually based on a banking security framework. Swiss design, ironically."

"Fascinating." William typed a message to Jansen's network: Need PI trace on Olivia Grant. Journalist cover. Phone routes through Chongqing VPN layers. 48-hour deadline.

"The real vulnerability is the authentication protocols," Torres continued. "They rely on biometric plus token systems, but the tokens rotate on a 72-hour cycle. If you caught someone in that window—"

"Hypothetically."

"Hypothetically, yes." Torres chuckled. "If you hypothetically caught someone in that window, you could hypothetically maintain access until the next rotation."

[INTELLIGENCE ACQUIRED: ICA authentication protocols]

[VALUE: High]

[NOTE: Target freely volunteering operational security details. Asset cultivation successful.]

William committed the details to memory while Jansen's confirmation pinged on the other phone: PI assigned. Misha Volkov, ex-FSB, specializes in digital ghosts. Results in 48.

"You know," Torres said, "I've never talked to someone outside the agency who actually understands this stuff. Most private-sector guys just want to talk about the glamorous parts."

"The glamorous parts are usually the least important."

"Exactly!" Torres's enthusiasm was almost endearing. "That's what I keep telling the handlers, but they don't listen. They want results, not process."

William let him talk—the complaints about management, the frustrations with bureaucracy, the slow accumulation of grievances that made a man vulnerable to manipulation.

"He's lonely. He's undervalued. He's drowning in debt and nobody at work cares about his twin daughters."

The empathy was genuine, which made it worse. Torres was a good man trapped in bad circumstances, and William was systematically positioning him for destruction.

[OBSERVATION: User experiencing sympathy for target]

[CLARIFICATION: Sympathy does not affect tactical assessment]

[REMINDER: Target serves operational purpose. Emotional attachment is inefficient.]

"Listen," Torres said, "I should probably head home. Early briefing tomorrow."

"Of course. Same time next week?"

"I'd like that." A pause. "You know, William—it's nice having someone to talk to. Someone who gets it."

The line went dead. William stared at the phone for a long moment.

"He thinks we're friends."

[CORRECTION: Target believes relationship is genuine. User knows it is not. This asymmetry serves operational goals.]

The system was right. That was the worst part.

The counter-investigation on Olivia required parallel processing.

William spread his notes across the hotel desk: everything he'd observed during their café encounter, everything that didn't fit the "journalist" cover story.

[OLIVIA GRANT — ANALYSIS]

[OBSERVATION 1: Ordered user's usual coffee before arrival (prior surveillance confirmed)]

[OBSERVATION 2: Knew specific details about Paris Showstopper secondary casualty]

[OBSERVATION 3: Referenced "second contractor" theory — matches ICA internal assessment]

[OBSERVATION 4: System Scan returned "Unknown — data insufficient" (first failure)]

[OBSERVATION 5: Business card phone routes through Chongqing VPN (sophisticated tradecraft)]

[OBSERVATION 6: Demonstrated high-level social perception (read user microexpressions despite MGN 6)]

She wasn't ICA—their investigation was institutional, not personal contact. She wasn't Providence—they operated through intermediaries, not direct confrontation. She wasn't Shadow Client—that network didn't exist yet in any organized form.

"She's independent. Or she's working for someone I don't know about."

The phone number traced to Chongqing, but that was almost certainly a relay—you didn't establish your actual base at the end of an obvious digital trail. The "Olivia Grant" identity was shallow enough to be disposable but documented enough to pass casual verification.

[HYPOTHESIS: Subject is intelligence professional operating under journalistic cover]

[AFFILIATION: Unknown]

[MOTIVATION: Unknown]

[THREAT LEVEL: High]

"She found you. She tracked your operational pattern. She sat in your seat and drank your coffee and watched you squirm."

William's hands had curled into fists without conscious intention. He forced them open.

"Control. You need control."

The PI results would come in 48 hours. Misha Volkov was good—Jansen's network didn't employ amateurs. In the meantime, William needed to accelerate the Torres frame job.

Two investigations were converging on him now. The ICA's institutional hunt and Olivia's personal pursuit. If they connected before he had cover, the combined pressure would crush him.

"Torres needs to become the suspect before you do."

[TACTICAL ASSESSMENT: User analysis correct]

[TORRES FRAME JOB: Execution timeline moved forward]

[OBJECTIVE: Plant evidence connecting Torres's digital fingerprint to UNKNOWN-7's activities]

The ICA system architecture Torres had just described—the authentication protocols, the firewall weaknesses, the token rotation windows—William could use that information against him. Create the appearance that Torres had unauthorized external access. Make him look like the second contractor, the ghost who'd been shadowing 47's missions.

"You're going to destroy his career. His life. And he just called you a friend."

[OBSERVATION: User moral conflict noted]

[CLARIFICATION: Moral conflicts do not affect survival calculations]

[CURRENT HUMANITY: 84]

[REMINDER: User established lines include "won't harm children" and "won't betray trusted allies." Torres is not a trusted ally—he is a target. No line violation occurs.]

The logic was airtight. Torres wasn't a friend—he was a tool William had cultivated for exactly this purpose. The relationship was fiction, built on false pretenses, designed to produce exactly this outcome.

"Then why does it feel like betrayal?"

[ANSWER: Emotional responses do not require logical consistency. User is experiencing sympathy for target while simultaneously preparing target's destruction. Both reactions can coexist.]

William closed his notebook and walked to the window. Paris sprawled below, lights beginning to flicker on as evening settled over the city.

Torres was out there somewhere—probably having dinner alone, maybe talking to his daughters on the phone, counting the days until his next custody weekend. A good man with bad luck and worse judgment, about to become the ICA's primary suspect for UNKNOWN-7's activities.

"Forty-eight hours until the PI report on Olivia. Forty-eight hours Torres doesn't know he has left."

[COUNTDOWN: INITIATED]

[PARALLEL INVESTIGATIONS: Active]

[USER POSITION: Vulnerable but operational]

The races had started. Olivia hunting William. William hunting Olivia's identity. The ICA hunting UNKNOWN-7. And beneath it all, Torres—oblivious, grateful, doomed.

"The one that finishes first wins."

William turned away from the window and started planning the next phase of Torres's destruction.
