Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Pressure Alignment

No one moved.

That was the first thing that mattered.

Three people.

Same space.

No distance left to create advantage.

Ayaan watched him.

Not his face.

His posture.

Breathing.

Micro-movements.

Nothing careless.

Nothing wasted.

Which meant—

Danger.

Meera stood between them.

Not shielding.

Not neutral.

Positioning.

"You're not finished," she said.

The man's gaze stayed on her.

"No."

A pause.

"Then continue," she said.

Ayaan's eyes flicked toward her.

Brief.

Sharp.

But he didn't interrupt.

Because she wasn't wrong.

The man stepped closer.

Now—

Closer than before.

Within reach.

"You adapted faster than expected," he said.

Meera didn't move.

"You underestimated me," she replied.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Simple.

Direct.

Ayaan didn't like that.

Not the answer—

The focus.

"You're still doing it," Ayaan said.

The man glanced at him.

"What?" he asked.

"Prioritizing her."

Silence.

The man didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Ayaan stepped forward.

Now—

Breaking the triangle.

Forcing alignment.

"That's inefficient," Ayaan said.

A pause.

Then—

"Or intentional," the man replied.

Silence.

That—

Was more accurate.

Meera's gaze shifted slightly.

Not away—

Between them.

"You're testing imbalance," she said.

The man looked at her again.

"Yes."

A pause.

"To see what happens when control shifts."

Silence.

Ayaan's jaw tightened slightly.

"And what have you seen?" he asked.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He studied Ayaan.

Properly this time.

Not briefly.

Not dismissively.

"You react faster when she's involved," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"You make different decisions."

Silence.

That—

Was accurate.

Too accurate.

Ayaan didn't deny it.

"Observation isn't insight," he said.

The man smiled faintly.

"No," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"But it leads to it."

Silence.

Meera stepped slightly forward.

Breaking the space again.

"You're not just watching," she said.

The man's eyes stayed on her.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"I'm building a model."

That—

Was new.

Ayaan's gaze sharpened instantly.

"Of what?" he asked.

The man tilted his head slightly.

"People who don't follow expected patterns."

Silence.

Meera didn't react immediately.

Then—

"And you think we fit that?" she asked.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"You both deviate."

Silence.

Ayaan stepped closer.

Now—

Face to face.

"You're categorizing behavior," he said.

The man nodded slightly.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"And selecting for it."

"Yes."

Silence.

Meera's voice lowered slightly.

"And what happens after selection?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Which meant—

That part mattered.

Ayaan noticed.

Meera noticed.

"Answer," Ayaan said.

The man looked at him.

This time—

Directly.

"They're given a role."

Silence.

Ayaan's expression didn't change.

"What role?"

The man's gaze shifted back to Meera.

"That depends," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"On how far they're willing to go."

Silence.

That—

Was the real test.

Not reaction.

Not observation.

Willingness.

Meera stepped closer.

Now—

Closer to him than Ayaan.

"How far have we gone?" she asked.

Ayaan's eyes narrowed instantly.

Too close.

The man didn't step back.

Didn't react.

"Far enough to be here," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"Not far enough to decide."

Silence.

That—

Was the line.

Ayaan moved.

Fast.

He stepped forward—

Pulled Meera back.

Not violently.

But clearly.

Creating distance.

The man watched.

Closely.

And then—

He smiled.

Faint.

Controlled.

"There it is," he said.

Silence.

Ayaan's grip on Meera's arm didn't loosen.

"You're proving my point," the man added.

A pause.

Then—

"Control shifts."

Silence.

Meera didn't pull away.

Didn't resist.

But she looked at Ayaan.

And that look—

Was different.

Not resistance.

Not submission.

Awareness.

Because now—

They weren't just being tested.

They were showing him exactly what he wanted.
