Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 12: THE UNSEEN TRAP

The board had changed.

Not physically.

But the way it felt.

Every piece now carried weight.

Every square felt like a decision that could not be taken back.

Kimiko sat perfectly still, her gloved fingers resting lightly near her queen.

Her smile remained.

Sharp. Calm. Unbothered.

But Lin Xia's eyes had changed.

She wasn't just playing anymore.

She was watching.

"…Mei Chen," she whispered, barely audible.

Mei Chen didn't look at her.

"…Yeah?"

"…Don't react."

A pause.

"…She's cheating."

Silence.

For a split second, Mei Chen's fingers stiffened.

Then relaxed.

"…Where?"

Lin Xia's gaze didn't leave the board.

"…Not obvious."

"…Micro-adjustments."

"…Timing."

Another move from Kimiko.

Her queen slid across the board.

Smooth.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Lin Xia's eyes narrowed slightly.

The placement—

It was off.

Not enough for the system to flag it.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But enough to change angles.

Enough to create pressure that shouldn't exist yet.

Mei Chen finally saw it.

"…She shifted it."

"…Half a square," Lin Xia confirmed.

The crowd didn't notice.

They never did.

Whispers echoed:

"She's flawless…""That positioning is insane…""No one reads the board like her…"

Kimiko smiled slightly.

Enjoying it.

Because to everyone else—

She was a genius.

But to Lin Xia—

She was predictable.

🔹 THE SILENT DECISION

Mei Chen leaned closer.

"…Do we call it out?"

Lin Xia shook her head.

Slow.

"…No."

"…Why?"

A pause.

"…Because she doesn't know we know."

Mei Chen's lips curved slightly.

"…So we let her keep thinking she's winning."

"…Exactly."

Across the board—

Kimiko's eyes flickered briefly.

Something felt wrong.

"…Why aren't they reacting…" she thought.

🔹 MIDGAME: THE INVISIBLE WAR

Kimiko pushed forward.

Aggressive now.

Her knight advanced.

Her queen applied pressure.

Her rook shifted slightly—

Again.

Another micro-cheat.

Lin Xia saw all of it.

Counted it.

Adjusted for it.

She moved her pawn.

Simple.

One step forward.

The crowd barely reacted.

"Defensive…"

"She's falling behind…"

But Mei Chen's eyes widened slightly.

"…No…"

Because that pawn—

Opened a line.

Not now.

Not immediately.

But in three moves.

Kimiko tilted her head.

"…You're slow," she said softly.

Lin Xia didn't answer.

She moved her bishop.

Diagonal.

Precise.

Now two lines connected.

Kimiko's fingers paused.

Just for a second.

"…Strange…"

She couldn't see it yet.

But something was forming.

🔹 PRESSURE

The board tightened.

Kimiko attacked.

Fast.

Her queen moved again.

Too smooth.

Too exact.

Another cheat.

Lin Xia allowed it.

Didn't react.

Didn't expose it.

Instead—

She moved her knight.

Into danger.

Mei Chen blinked.

"…Lin Xia…"

"…Trust me."

The knight sat exposed.

An obvious target.

Kimiko smiled wider.

"…Finally made a mistake."

She didn't hesitate.

Her rook moved.

Click.

Knight captured.

The board pulsed.

PUNISHMENT: MINOR BURN — ACTIVATED

A sharp heat ran through Lin Xia's arm.

She didn't flinch.

Didn't react.

Didn't even blink.

Kimiko's smile faltered slightly.

"…Why… no reaction…?"

🔹 THE TRAP CLOSES

Lin Xia lifted her hand again.

Slow.

Controlled.

She moved her cannon piece—

(no one noticed how perfectly it aligned)

Then—

Mei Chen moved.

Her rook.

Cutting off an escape route.

Now—

The pattern appeared.

Too late.

Kimiko's eyes widened slightly.

"…Wait…"

Her queen—

Was boxed.

Her rook—

Out of position.

Her general—

Exposed.

And the cheating?

It didn't save her.

It had actually made it worse.

Because Lin Xia had calculated with the cheat in mind.

🔹 THE REALIZATION

Kimiko looked up.

For the first time—

There was something in her eyes.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

"…You…"

Lin Xia finally spoke.

Quiet.

Calm.

"…You rely on it too much."

Kimiko's breath caught.

"…You saw it…?"

But her voice was too low.

No one else heard.

The crowd still whispered:

"She's still winning…""Look at her control…"

They had no idea.

🔹 THE FINAL MOVE

Lin Xia reached forward.

Her chariot.

It moved straight.

Clean.

Precise.

Cutting the last escape.

Mei Chen followed instantly.

"…Check."

The board froze.

Kimiko stared.

No moves left.

No cheats left.

No escape.

Lin Xia looked directly at her.

And said softly—

Only for her to hear:

"…Cheating won't take you anywhere."

Silence.

Then—

CHECKMATE.

The system exploded into light.

RESULT: LOSS CONFIRMED

The crowd gasped.

"WHAT?!"

"She lost?!"

"No way—Kimiko lost?!"

Chaos.

But they didn't understand.

They thought it was skill.

They thought it was luck.

They didn't see the truth.

🔹 PUNISHMENT

Kimiko staggered.

The system activated.

Her body froze.

Her hands trembled.

For a second—

She looked… human.

Then it stopped.

Not extreme.

Not brutal.

But enough.

A crack in her perfect image.

🔹 AFTERMATH

The crowd whispered wildly.

"She lost…"

"Those girls…"

"Who are they…?"

Yue Ning watched quietly.

"…They broke her," she whispered.

Lin Xia stood.

Calm.

Mei Chen smirked slightly.

"…And we didn't even cheat."

Kimiko looked at them.

Not smiling anymore.

Not confident.

Just…

Thinking.

"…You saw everything…" she said quietly.

Lin Xia didn't respond.

She just turned.

And walked away.
