Chapter 11
Part 1 - Moving Pieces
The request sounded simple.
Which, at this point, meant it absolutely wasn't.
Adrian stood in the guild hall, staring at the quest board like it might personally apologize.
It didn't.
"...escort job," Adrian muttered. "Safe route, light risk, decent pay..."
He paused.
"...yeah, no. That's a lie."
"Correct!" Benjamin said, appearing beside him like a problem that refused to go away. "It is absolutely a lie!"
Adrian didn't even flinch.
"I'm starting to think you just live here," Adrian said.
"I do," Benjamin replied proudly.
"...that explains a lot."
Benjamin tapped the quest paper.
"Merchant convoy. Heading near Shadowfen," Benjamin said. "Which means—"
"Something terrible is going to happen," Adrian finished.
"Exactly!" Benjamin beamed.
"...I hate that we agree."
A familiar calm voice cut in.
"You're still going."
Adrian turned.
Elena stood a few steps away, Sky perched lightly on her shoulder.
The small creature's wings shifted slightly, eyes alert.
"...I was considering not going," Adrian said.
"You weren't," Elena replied.
"...I wasn't," Adrian admitted.
Sky chirped softly.
Adrian glanced at it.
"...you brought backup," Adrian said.
"She insisted," Elena replied.
Sky puffed up slightly.
Adrian nodded.
"...fair enough."
A fourth voice joined them.
"You're late."
Adrian turned again.
Lilly stood near the entrance, arms crossed, wings folded tight behind her.
Her expression was the same as always—
Unimpressed.
"I wasn't aware we had a schedule," Adrian said.
"You do now," Lilly replied.
"...great," Adrian muttered. "That's new."
Benjamin clapped his hands together.
"Marvelous! The group is assembling!" Benjamin said.
"We're not a group," Adrian said immediately.
"You're standing together," Benjamin replied. "That's step one!"
"...that's not how teams work."
"It is today!" Benjamin said.
Elena glanced between them.
"We leave in ten minutes," Elena said.
Adrian blinked.
"...that feels soon," Adrian said.
"It is," Lilly replied.
"...okay," Adrian sighed. "Sure. Why not."
Outside Stonehollow
The convoy waited just beyond the gates.
Three wagons.
Light guards.
Nervous energy.
Adrian looked at it.
Then at Benjamin.
"...you said 'light risk,'" Adrian said.
"Yes," Benjamin replied.
"They look like they're about to cry," Adrian said.
"That is unrelated," Benjamin said confidently.
"...I don't think it is."
One of the merchants approached.
Middle-aged.
Tired.
Trying to look confident and failing slightly.
"You're the adventurers?" the merchant asked.
Adrian glanced at the others.
Then back at him.
"...allegedly," Adrian said.
The merchant hesitated.
"...we were told you're capable," he said carefully.
Adrian nodded.
"...we've also been told that," Adrian replied.
Benjamin stepped forward dramatically.
"Fear not!" Benjamin declared. "For I, Benjamin Dazzle—the whizziest wizard in Stonehollow—shall ensure your safe passage!"
A pause.
"...I regret asking," the merchant said quietly.
"Understandable," Adrian said.
Elena stepped forward slightly.
"We'll keep you safe," Elena said calmly.
That worked.
The merchant nodded.
Relieved.
"...thank you," he said.
Adrian glanced at Elena.
"...you're better at that," Adrian said.
"It helps," Elena replied.
"...yeah, I should probably not talk to clients."
"That would be wise," Lilly added.
"...wow," Adrian said. "Very supportive team."
"We're not a team," Lilly reminded him.
"...right. Of course not."
The Road to Shadowfen
The forest thickened the further they went.
Less light.
More silence.
Adrian walked near the front.
Not leading.
Just... there.
Benjamin walked beside him, humming something completely unrelated to the situation.
Kazer trotted ahead.
Jok moved through the trees like a glitch.
"...your pets concern me," Adrian said.
"They are companions!" Benjamin corrected.
"They are chaos," Adrian replied.
"Controlled chaos!" Benjamin said.
"...barely."
Behind them—
Elena moved quietly.
Sky alert.
Watching everything.
Lilly stayed to the side.
Not part of the group.
But not separate either.
Adrian noticed.
Of course he did.
"...you always do that?" Adrian asked, glancing toward her.
"Do what?" Lilly replied.
"Hover near the edge like you might disappear at any second," Adrian said.
She didn't answer immediately.
"...habit," Lilly said.
Adrian nodded slightly.
"...fair."
The road narrowed.
Trees thicker.
Air heavier.
Adrian slowed slightly.
"...you feel that?" Adrian asked.
Elena nodded.
"Yes," Elena said.
Benjamin stopped humming.
"...ah," Benjamin said quietly. "That's not good."
"...that's never good," Adrian replied.
The wind shifted.
Subtle.
Cold.
Sky let out a sharp chirp.
Lilly's posture changed instantly.
Sword ready.
Shield raised slightly.
"Stop the wagons," Elena said.
The merchant didn't argue.
Everything went still.
Too still.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"...yeah," Adrian muttered. "I don't like this part."
Something moved in the trees.
Fast.
Heavy.
Then—
Silence again.
"...okay," Adrian said. "That's worse."
A low growl echoed through the forest.
Deep.
Heavy.
Wrong.
The ground seemed to tense with it.
The merchants froze.
"...that's not—" one of them started.
"It is," Elena said quietly.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"...of course it is," Adrian said.
The trees shifted—
And it stepped into view.
The Dread Wolf.
Larger than before.
Or maybe it just felt that way.
Its eyes locked onto them.
Not wild.
Not mindless.
Aware.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"...yeah," Adrian said under his breath. "That's still terrifying."
It took a step forward.
The air tightened.
No one moved.
Then—
It lunged.
Fast.
Too fast.
"MOVE!" Lilly shouted.
Everything exploded into motion.
Adrian's hand lifted—
Fire forming instantly—
"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian shouted.
The sphere launched—
Striking the wolf mid-charge—
Flame burst across its side.
For a moment—
It worked.
The wolf staggered slightly.
Then—
It kept coming.
"...right," Adrian said. "Of course it did."
"Split it!" Elena called out. "Don't group up!"
Lilly dashed forward—
Shield raised—
Intercepting its path—
The impact sent her sliding back—
But she held.
Benjamin raised his staff.
"EARTH BIND!" Benjamin shouted.
The ground surged—
Mud and stone rising—
Grabbing at the wolf's legs—
It tore free instantly.
"...noted!" Benjamin said.
Sky launched into the air—
Wind spiraling around it—
Elena moved with it—
Her magic guiding—
Shaping—
Adrian stepped forward.
Not back.
"...okay," Adrian muttered. "We're doing this."
Fire formed again—
Faster—
Stronger—
He waited—
Watching—
Timing.
The wolf lunged at Lilly—
"NOW!" Elena called.
Wind surged—
Adrian threw the Inferno Ball—
The wind caught it—
Amplified it—
The flames roared—
Expanding—
Burning hotter—
Brighter—
The attack slammed into the wolf—
Driving it back—
For a moment—
It hurt.
The wolf snarled—
A real reaction.
Adrian's eyes widened slightly.
"...okay," Adrian said. "That actually worked."
Then—
The wolf's gaze snapped to him.
Locked.
"...that's not good," Adrian said.
It moved.
Not at Lilly.
Not at Elena.
At him.
Fast.
Too fast.
Adrian's body tensed—
Then—
A blur dropped between them.
Steel flashed.
The impact shook the ground.
Lilly stood in front of him.
Shield braced.
Sword ready.
"...don't freeze," Lilly said.
Adrian blinked.
"...working on it," Adrian replied.
The wolf growled.
Lower.
Angrier.
Elena stepped beside them.
Wind gathering again.
Benjamin moved behind.
Staff raised.
For a brief moment—
They stood together.
Not planned.
Not perfect.
But aligned.
"...okay," Adrian said quietly.
Not a team.
But close.
The wolf lunged again.
And this time—
They moved with it.
Part 2 - Hold the Line
The Dread Wolf didn't slow down.
It adapted. The moment Lilly blocked its charge, the wolf twisted mid-motion—claws tearing sideways instead of forward.
Too fast.
Too precise.
"LEFT!" Elena called out.
Lilly reacted instantly, shifting her shield—
The impact still hit.
Hard.
She slid back across the dirt, boots carving lines into the ground.
But she didn't fall.
"...that thing hits harder than it looks," Lilly said through clenched teeth.
"IT'S THE SIZE OF A HOUSE!" Benjamin shouted.
"...yeah, that tracks," Adrian muttered.
The wolf turned again.
Not wild.
Not enraged.
Focused. On them.
"Protect the wagons!" Elena said.
Adrian glanced back.
The merchants were scrambling—trying to pull the wagons together, guards forming a shaky line.
"...yeah," Adrian said quietly. "They're not surviving this."
"Which is why we will," Elena replied.
Adrian exhaled.
"...right. No pressure."
The wolf moved again—
Faster this time.
It vanished.
"...oh, I hate that," Adrian said.
"UP!" Benjamin shouted.
The wolf came down from above—
Claws aimed straight for the convoy.
"NO—!" the merchant shouted.
Adrian didn't think.
Didn't hesitate.
His arm shifted—
Not fully. Not cleanly. But enough.
It stretched—
Just slightly—
Elastic.
Wrong.
He grabbed the side of a wagon—
And pulled.
The entire thing moved.
Wood scraped across dirt as the wagon shifted out of the wolf's path.
The creature slammed into the ground where it had been—
Impact shaking the earth.
Silence—
Then chaos again.
Adrian blinked.
"...okay," Adrian said, staring at his arm. "That's new."
"Later!" Elena called. "Focus!"
"...right," Adrian said. "Focus first, existential crisis later."
The wolf turned toward him again.
"...yeah, I knew that would happen," Adrian muttered.
"Adrian!" Benjamin shouted. "Try containment!"
"...with what?" Adrian asked.
"Anything!" Benjamin replied.
"...great. Love vague instructions."
The wolf lunged— Adrian stepped forward.
Not back.
"Fine," Adrian said. "We're improvising."
He raised both hands—
Water formed.
Not smooth.
Not perfect.
But there.
"Aqua Sphere," Adrian muttered.
The sphere expanded—
Then dropped—
At the same time—
"NOW!" Adrian shouted.
Benjamin reacted instantly.
"MUD COFFIN!" Benjamin yelled.
Earth surged upward— Sand and dirt mixing with the water—
The ground beneath the wolf collapsed inward— Thick, heavy mud forming around its legs—
It sank.
Not fully.
But enough.
"...okay," Adrian said, breathing heavier now. "That worked better than expected."
"For about three seconds!" Benjamin shouted.
The wolf roared—
And tore free.
Mud shattered.
Earth cracked.
"...yep," Adrian said. "Three seconds."
"Good enough!" Elena said.
Wind surged around her—
Sky taking to the air—
The currents sharpened—
Cutting—
Restricting—
Not stopping the wolf—
But slowing it.
"Keep it off balance!" Elena called.
Lilly moved again—
Faster now.
More aggressive.
She struck low—
Blade scraping against the wolf's hide—
No deep damage—
But enough to redirect its movement.
"...we're not killing it like this," Lilly said.
"I know!" Adrian replied.
"Then think faster!" she snapped.
"...working on it!"
The wolf spun—
Tail whipping—
It caught Benjamin mid-cast—
Sending him flying.
"BENJAMIN!" Adrian shouted.
Kazer barked, rushing toward him.
Jok dropped from the trees, hissing wildly.
Benjamin hit the ground hard—
But groaned.
"I am alive!" Benjamin shouted. "Mostly!"
"...good enough!" Adrian said.
The wolf turned again—
This time—
Toward the merchants.
"...no," Adrian said quietly.
It charged.
Fast.
Too fast.
"WE CAN'T STOP THAT!" one of the guards shouted.
Adrian stepped forward anyway.
"...yeah," Adrian said. "We can."
Fire formed.
Instant.
Larger than before.
Denser.
Unstable—
But controlled enough.
"ELENA!" Adrian shouted.
She didn't hesitate.
Wind surged.
Sky dove—
The air twisted—
Feeding the flame—
"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian shouted.
He threw it—
The wind caught it—
Amplified it—
The flames roared—
Brighter.
Hotter.
The attack slammed into the wolf—
Mid-charge—
Explosion of fire and force—
The wolf staggered—
Actually staggered.
"...okay," Adrian said, breathing heavier. "That definitely worked."
But not enough.
The wolf shook it off—
Burn marks visible now—
It was hurt.
But not stopping.
"...yeah," Adrian said. "Still a problem."
It roared—
Louder this time.
Angrier.
The ground trembled slightly.
"...that feels new," Adrian said.
"It's adapting!" Benjamin shouted, pushing himself up. "We're making it take us seriously!"
"...I don't want that!" Adrian replied.
"Too late!" Benjamin yelled.
The wolf lowered its body—
Preparing.
Not just attacking.
Ending it.
"...we can't hold this," Lilly said.
Elena didn't argue.
"...no," Elena said quietly.
A beat.
"...we need to move it," she added.
Adrian looked at her.
"...move it?" Adrian asked.
"Lead it away," Elena said.
"...that sounds like a terrible idea," Adrian replied.
"It is," she said.
"...great."
She met his eyes.
Calm.
Focused.
"We can't protect them and fight it," Elena said.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"...so we pick," Adrian said.
"Yes," Elena replied.
Adrian looked back at the merchants.
Terrified.
Frozen.
Then back at the wolf.
"...yeah," Adrian said quietly.
Decision made.
"BENJAMIN!" Adrian shouted.
"I am here!" Benjamin replied.
"Get them out of here!" Adrian said.
Benjamin blinked.
"...that sounds like responsibility," Benjamin said.
"It is," Adrian replied.
"...I accept!" Benjamin said immediately.
"LILLY!" Adrian called.
She glanced at him.
"...you're not dying here," Lilly said.
"...that's the plan," Adrian replied.
Elena stepped beside him.
Sky circling above.
"...we pull it," Elena said.
Adrian nodded.
"...we pull it," Adrian repeated.
The wolf roared again—
And this time—
They ran toward it.
Not away.
"...this is a terrible idea," Adrian muttered.
"Yes," Elena agreed.
"...okay. Just checking."
The wolf lunged— And they led it straight into the forest.
Away from the convoy.
Into Shadowfen.
Part 3 - Into the Deep
The forest changed the moment they crossed into Shadowfen.
Not gradually.
Not subtly.
Immediately.
The air thickened.
The light dimmed.
Even the ground felt... different.
Softer.
Unstable.
Alive in a way Adrian didn't appreciate.
"...yeah," Adrian muttered as he ran. "This place is awful."
Behind them—
Branches snapped.
Trees shook.
The Dread Wolf wasn't slowing down.
"Don't lose pace!" Elena called, her voice calm but firm as she moved ahead.
"I wasn't planning to!" Adrian replied, slightly out of breath.
"That would be ideal," Elena said.
"...thank you for the encouragement," Adrian muttered.
Sky circled above, letting out sharp, warning chirps.
"Left!" Elena called suddenly.
Adrian didn't question it.
Didn't hesitate.
He turned—
Just as the wolf tore through the space he'd been in a second earlier.
"...okay," Adrian said, heart pounding. "That was close."
"You're still alive," Elena said.
"...your standards are low."
"They are realistic."
"...that's worse."
They broke into a clearing.
Wider.
More open.
Barely.
"Here!" Elena said, stopping abruptly.
Adrian skidded slightly to a halt beside her.
"...we're stopping?" Adrian asked.
"We can't keep running," Elena replied.
"...I was hoping we could."
The trees behind them exploded outward—
The Dread Wolf burst into the clearing.
It landed hard.
Eyes locked.
Breathing heavy—
But controlled.
It wasn't tired.
"...yeah," Adrian said. "That figures."
Elena stepped forward slightly.
Wind gathering around her.
"We hold it here," Elena said.
Adrian blinked.
"...we what?" Adrian asked.
"We hold it," Elena repeated.
"...that sounds like a worse version of the last plan."
"It's the only one we have," she said.
A beat.
"...okay," Adrian said. "Fair."
The wolf moved first.
It lunged—
Faster than before.
Adrian barely reacted—
Raising his hand—
Fire forming—
Too slow.
A blur cut in—
Steel met claw—
The impact rang out.
Lilly.
She slid back slightly, shield braced, wings flaring just enough to stabilize her.
"...you're late," Adrian said.
"I'm efficient," Lilly replied.
"...that's not what that means."
"I caught up," she said. "That's what matters."
Adrian exhaled.
"...yeah," Adrian said. "I'll take it."
The wolf snarled—
Shifting its focus between them.
Now—
Three targets.
Three threats.
"...good," Adrian muttered. "More of us to lose."
"Focus," Lilly said sharply.
"Right. Focusing," Adrian replied.
Elena stepped slightly to the side.
Wind building stronger now.
Sharper.
"We control its movement," Elena said. "Not its strength."
"...still sounds difficult," Adrian said.
"It is," she replied.
"...great."
The wolf lunged again—
Lilly moved first—
Intercepting—
Shield up—
This time—
She didn't just block.
She redirected.
The wolf's momentum shifted slightly—
Just enough—
"NOW!" Elena called.
Wind surged—
Cutting across the wolf's side—
Forcing it off-balance—
Adrian stepped forward—
Fire forming instantly—
"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian shouted.
He threw it—
The attack struck clean—
Flames bursting across the wolf's shoulder—
It roared—
This time—
Louder.
Angrier.
"...okay," Adrian said, breathing heavier now. "We're doing damage."
"Not enough," Lilly replied.
"...yeah, I figured."
The wolf turned—
Faster now—
It struck—
Claws slamming into the ground—
The shockwave knocked Adrian back—
He hit the ground hard—
Air knocked from his lungs.
"...okay," Adrian wheezed. "That's new."
"Adrian!" Elena called.
"I'm fine!" Adrian replied, pushing himself up. "Probably!"
The wolf didn't give him time.
It charged—
Straight at him.
"...right," Adrian said. "Of course it did."
He raised his hand—
Nothing.
For half a second—
Nothing.
"...not now," Adrian muttered.
The wolf closed the distance—
Too fast—
Adrian's body reacted—
Not his magic.
His instinct.
His arm shifted—
Not fully—
But enough.
His hand stretched—
Catching the wolf's jaw—
For a split second—
Everything stopped.
The force—
The impact—
The weight—
"...okay," Adrian said through clenched teeth. "That's... a problem."
The ground cracked beneath him.
His arm trembled—
Straining—
He couldn't hold it.
Wouldn't hold it.
"MOVE!" Lilly shouted.
Adrian released—
Rolling to the side—
The wolf's jaws slammed shut where he'd been—
"...yeah," Adrian said, breathing hard. "Definitely a problem."
Elena stepped in—
Wind surging violently now—
"Fall back!" Elena called.
"...we just got here!" Adrian replied.
"We can't win this," she said.
That was different.
Not uncertain.
Certain.
Adrian paused for half a second.
"...yeah," Adrian said quietly. "I know."
The wolf roared again—
Stronger.
Faster.
Like it was adapting to them.
Learning.
"...that's unfair," Adrian muttered.
"It's evolving," Lilly said.
"...of course it is."
Elena grabbed Adrian's arm.
"We fall back," Elena said.
"...and do what?" Adrian asked.
She met his eyes.
"Survive," Elena replied.
A beat.
Adrian nodded.
"...right," Adrian said. "Step one."
Lilly moved beside them—
Shield raised—
"Move," Lilly said.
They retreated—
Carefully—
Not running blindly.
Pulling the wolf deeper.
Keeping its focus.
Keeping it away from the others.
Adrian glanced back once.
The convoy was gone.
Safe.
"...okay," Adrian said quietly. "That's something."
The wolf lunged again—
And they kept moving.
Not winning.
Not losing.
Just—
Surviving.
For now.
