Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: Safe in your arms

"How did you sneak in, Lucas? Hansen just told us about you. Anyway, it's good you're alive! This calls for celebration!' Sunshine ran to embrace him.

Seeing this, Hansen screamed with a strange, creepy tone. 'Enough, Sunshine! Let's go and party...' He separated them. This act got them all laughing."

Hansen held Sunshine's waist in front of the maids, sending goosebumps across her body. When he saw her blushing, he smiled and held her firmly.

"Where are we partying? Bilie's Hillside or Blue City?" asked a slender, attractive woman with dark skin and glasses.

Her heels clicked as she approached.

"Ciara...!!" Hansen and Lucas exclaimed in surprise

"No need to be surprised. Who's this lovely girl with you?" She raised an eyebrow, looking at Sunshine.

Sunshine moved away from Hansen. "I'm Sunshine. And you?"

"Ciara, as you heard my brothers say." She spoke with a sharp tone, removing her glasses.

"Sunshine is my woman, so be respectful."

"Aww, finally my brother snagged a beautiful and shy lady," she said, cupping her cheeks like a child.

"It's nice to meet you," she said, extending a hand.

"Nice to meet you too," Sunshine replied, shaking her hand.

Everyone, including the maids, went upstairs to prepare for the party. The men wore suits, and the women donned gowns of various colors and designs. There were eight people in the mansion: three men and five women.

"I'll take my sister as my partner; I'd be flying solo tonight if you hadn't shown up..." Lucas joked.

"Now that we're all ready, let's head to the party!" Ciara announced.

The party was extravagant. They were separated as soon as they entered. The venue was far more spacious and stunning than Bilie's Hillside.

The musical instruments played softly. Everyone at the ball swayed to the music. When Sunshine realized they were separated, a wave of unease washed over her.

She went outside, where there were more people than inside. As she turned to re-enter the gate, she saw Kiki dancing with a man. Kiki waved and continued dancing. Sunshine waved back, feeling a sense of calm as she re-entered the building.

As they danced, the music changed, and they switched partners. Sam nodded at Sunshine when their eyes met.

"Have we met before?" Sunshine's new partner inquired.

"Perhaps not; I'm not one for going out," she replied.

"Weren't you the lady in the blue dress at Bilie's Hillside the other night?"

"N...o," she replied softly, drawing out the word. "He recognized me, even with the mask. This is strange," she thought, a bead of sweat trickling down her back.

"You're not being honest, look into my eyes." He removed his mask as they danced. Sunshine met his gaze and felt a surge of panic. The music shifted to a faster tempo, and they changed partners once more.

"Ugh," Sunshine rolled her eyes and went to sit at the counter. She scanned the room for a familiar face but found none. Instead, she spotted the man who had tried to assault her. He smiled, but she didn't reciprocate. She pretended not to notice him and moved away from the counter.

As she entered the washroom to freshen up, she heard a woman's voice trembled, "Please, I beg you, spare my life. Take whatever you want, my money, everything. I have a child who needs me."

"Silence!" A harsh voice commanded. The man's hand shot out, and a stinging slap echoed in the room. He raised a glinting knife, the blade catching the dim light. "You said you'd give me everything to live, correct?"

Tears streamed down her face as the woman desperately nodded, her eyes wide with fear. ''Wham, wham, will you keep quiet?' He gripped her arm tightly, the knife hovering above. 'You said I could have you and spare your life, right?'

He spoke to her in a way that made her stomach tighten mocking, controlling, acting as if her fear meant nothing. Every word felt like another weight pressing down on her, another reminder that she had no power in that moment.

She was forced into a vulnerable position, her body trembling as he ignored every sign of her discomfort. She felt exposed, powerless, and terrified, trapped in a situation she never chose. His hands moved carelessly, treating her like something to be used rather than a person who was pleading for him to stop.

When she winced and whispered, "Please don't do this," her voice cracked with desperation. Instead of hearing her, he reacted with anger. The slap came fast and sharp, stealing her breath and leaving a mix of fear and disbelief in its wake.

He shoved her onto the couch, cold and unkind, continuing to push past every boundary she tried to hold onto. The more she resisted, the more he dismissed her pain leaving her feeling small, helpless, and utterly alone in a moment where she should have been safe.

All this time, Sunshine remained frozen where she stood, her back pressed against the wall, breath trapped beneath the hand covering her mouth. Her whole body trembled, every muscle locked in a mix of fear and disbelief. She felt as though the world had narrowed to a single moment of survival, her heartbeat loud enough she feared it would give her away.

She tried to inch backward, desperate for even the smallest distance, but her heel brushed against a vase. It toppled, shattering against the floor with a sharp, explosive crack that seemed to slice through the room.

The man jerked in shock, whipping toward the sound. But before he could take a single step, Sunshine's body finally obeyed the desperate instinct screaming inside her. She ran. She tore herself away from that room, that danger, that crushing weight of helplessness was driven only by the need to escape, to breathe, to survive.

He searched the bathroom and the small adjoining toilet, growing increasingly agitated when he found no one. Just as he turned to leave, Sunshine stepped out from behind the door, with fear and determination burning in her chest , she swung the broken vase with all the strength she had left. It shattered against him, and he collapsed instantly.

Her breath shook. "Isn't this the man who tried to assault me?" she whispered to herself, adrenaline rushing through her.

Without hesitating, she sprinted toward the room where the other woman had been held. The moment she saw her, she was terrified, disoriented, barely standing.

Sunshine rushed to her side and helped her escape into the safety of the crowd outside.

The woman clung to her, trembling uncontrollably.

"Thank you… for saving me. He… he hurt me. I thought I wasn't going to survive." Her voice broke, and before Sunshine could steady her, the woman's knees buckled and she collapsed.

The crowd, startled and unsure what had happened, scattered back to give space.

"Sunshine!" a familiar voice cried out. Ciara pushed through the people and ran to her. Her eyes were wide with worry as she grabbed Sunshine's shoulders.

"Hansen has been searching everywhere for you. Where have you been?"

It was already deep into the night by the time they finally made it home. Exhaustion hung over them like a heavy cloud. Hansen ordered pizza, and the three of them sat in the quiet dining hall, the room lit only by the soft glow of the overhead lamp.

"Sunshine," Hansen said gently, his voice thick with worry, "you shouldn't get involved in things like this. People like him… they're dangerous. They could hurt you." His eyes pleaded with her to understand.

Sunshine nodded, but her mind was far away.

Sleep refused to come to her that night. Every time she closed her eyes, the memories returned sharp, relentless, haunting. She kept seeing the man's face twisted with cruelty, the fear in the woman's eyes, the feeling of helplessness that had gripped her.

He wasn't just cruel. He was a monster.

She turned in bed, trying to push the thoughts away, but the darker fragments kept resurfacing the moments she wished she could forget. No matter how tightly she shut her eyes or how deeply she breathed, the images lingered like shadows she couldn't outrun.

"You should have told me you weren't dressed," she muttered, hiding her face with her hands. "I wouldn't have switched on the light." She said as she entered his room.

He gave a soft, teasing smile, eyes still closed. "Relax. I sleep comfortably like this anyway."

When he finally opened his eyes and saw her standing there with confident, graceful, dressed in something far more striking than he expected, his expression changed completely. Surprise, admiration, and something tender flickered across his face.

"Sunshine… are you trying to drive me crazy?" he asked, sounding half-shy and half-enchanted, like someone caught off guard by beauty.

"Come here," he said quietly.

She stepped closer to his bed, and his breath caught. He looked at her as though she'd just pulled the stars down into the room. "Do you realize what you're doing to me?" he whispered, his voice warm and full of emotion, love, longing, and something he could no longer hide.

He pulled the blankets aside and looked at her with a gentle smile, his eyes soft and full of affection. Sunshine felt her heart flutter as she stepped closer, a nervous excitement mixing with warmth.

"Come here," he whispered, and she moved toward him without hesitation. The distance between them disappeared, replaced by the closeness of two people who trusted each other completely.

He brushed a strand of hair from her face and leaned in, their lips meeting in a slow, tender kiss. Each touch, each glance, was filled with something deeper than desire. It was care, connection, and love. Sunshine's hands rested lightly on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart, and she smiled against his lips.

They stayed like that for what felt like hours, exploring the comfort of each other's presence. His hands held her gently, and she wrapped her arms around him, letting herself feel safe and cherished. The world outside ceased to exist; there was only the warmth between them, the quiet laughter, the whispered "I love you," and the moments of closeness that made everything else fade away.

When the night finally gave way to morning, they lay entwined in each other's arms, hearts still racing, smiles still lingering, knowing that the love they shared was all that truly mattered.
