Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – The Notebook

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

It felt… real.

Heavier than it should be.

Like it carried something more than just paper.

I stared at it for a few seconds.

Not opening it yet.

Not ready.

"Why didn't you show this before?" I asked quietly.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she watched my hands.

Carefully.

Like she was waiting for something to happen.

"…Because it's dangerous," she said finally.

I frowned slightly.

"It's a notebook."

"No," she replied.

"It's a memory anchor."

The words felt strange.

Unfamiliar.

"What does that mean?"

She leaned closer.

Lowering her voice.

"It's something they can't fully erase."

My chest tightened.

"Then why hide it?"

"Because they can still find it."

Silence.

"And if they do…" she continued.

"They'll know I remember."

That explained the fear in her eyes.

I looked back at the notebook.

"So this is everything?"

She nodded slowly.

"Everything I could keep."

A pause.

"Before it disappeared too."

I swallowed hard.

"Then we use it."

Her expression shifted instantly.

"No."

The answer came too fast.

Too sharp.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"You don't understand," she said.

"Then explain."

Silence.

She hesitated.

Like she was deciding something important.

Then—

She nodded slightly.

"…Open it."

My heart skipped.

Slowly…

I lifted the cover.

The first page was filled with names.

Dozens.

Written by hand.

Some crossed out.

Others faded.

My chest tightened instantly.

"These are them…"

"Yes."

I ran my fingers lightly over the page.

Some names felt clearer.

Stronger.

Others—

Barely there.

Like they were disappearing even now.

"Why are some fading?" I asked.

Her voice dropped.

"Because I'm forgetting."

That hit harder than expected.

"And when you forget…"

"They're gone."

Silence.

I turned the page.

Notes.

Fragments.

Descriptions of things I already experienced.

"The voices…"

"The shadows…"

"The rules…"

Everything was there.

But then—

Something different.

Drawings.

Rough sketches.

Distorted shapes.

Not human.

Not fully.

My chest tightened.

"You saw them too?"

She nodded.

"But not like you."

"What do you mean?"

"You're closer."

That word again.

Closer.

I turned another page.

And froze.

There—

At the bottom—

A name.

Clear.

Not faded.

Different from the others.

My breath stopped.

"…That's…"

My name.

Written clearly.

Untouched.

I looked at her instantly.

"Why is my name here?"

Silence.

Her eyes didn't move.

"…Because I wrote it."

"When?"

"…Today."

My chest tightened.

"So you knew…"

She nodded slowly.

"I felt it."

A pause.

"Before I saw you."

That explained everything.

"You're tracking it…"

"Yes."

My mind started racing.

"Then we can stop it."

"No."

Her answer was immediate.

"We can delay it."

That wasn't what I wanted to hear.

"But not stop it."

I clenched my fists.

"There has to be a way."

Silence.

Then—

She said something that changed everything.

"There is."

My heart skipped.

"What is it?"

She hesitated.

Then looked straight into my eyes.

"You have to replace the replacement."

The words didn't make sense at first.

"…What?"

"Take your place back."

My chest tightened.

"How?"

Her voice dropped even lower.

"By becoming more real than him."

Silence.

"That's not possible."

"It is."

She leaned closer.

"But it's dangerous."

Everything about this was dangerous.

"I don't care."

She studied me.

Long.

Carefully.

"…Then you'll have to break the last rule."

My breath slowed.

"What rule?"

She looked down at the notebook.

Then back at me.

"Never face them directly."

A cold feeling spread through my body.

"…I already did."

She shook her head slowly.

"No."

Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"Not like this."

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

"If you do this…" she continued.

"You might not come back."

I stared at the notebook.

At my name.

Still clear.

Still there.

"For now…" I whispered.

Then I looked up.

I don't have a choice.

To take his life back… he has to face them directly.

Would you risk everything to prove you exist? 👀
