Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23 – The Way I Choose You

I didn't rush.

That was new.

Before, everything about him felt urgent—

like I needed to get there quickly,

like every second mattered too much.

But now…

I walked.

Slowly.

Not because I wasn't excited.

But because I was sure.

And there's a difference between wanting something…

And choosing it.

By the time I got there, my heart wasn't racing the way it used to.

Not out of anxiety.

Not out of confusion.

But something steadier.

Something deeper.

I knocked once.

The door opened almost immediately.

And there he was.

Same calm expression.

Same unreadable eyes.

Same presence that seemed to pull everything toward him without trying.

But this time…

I didn't feel overwhelmed.

I just felt… drawn.

"You took your time," he said.

A faint smile touched my lips.

"I wasn't in a hurry."

His gaze lingered on me for a second longer than usual.

"Something's different," he said.

I stepped inside, brushing past him slightly.

"I was thinking the same thing," I replied.

The door closed behind me with a quiet click.

And just like that—

We were alone again.

But it didn't feel like before.

There was no tension pulling tight between us.

No unspoken words hanging in the air.

Just… understanding.

And somehow, that felt even more intense.

"What changed?" he asked, turning to face me fully.

I leaned back slightly against the wall, studying him.

"I stopped overthinking," I said simply.

His brows lifted slightly.

"Just like that?"

I shrugged lightly.

"Not just like that," I admitted.

"But enough."

He watched me carefully, like he was trying to figure out what I wasn't saying.

"And what did you decide?"

My chest tightened slightly at the question.

But this time…

I didn't hesitate.

"I decided I'm not running from this anymore."

Silence.

But not the heavy kind.

The kind that settles in…

because something important has just been said.

His gaze darkened slightly, something shifting behind his usual calm.

"That's a big decision," he said quietly.

"I know."

"And you're sure?"

I nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Then—

"Why?"

The question wasn't challenging.

It wasn't doubtful.

It was real.

And it deserved a real answer.

"Because I kept trying to find a reason to stop," I said softly.

I pushed myself off the wall, stepping a little closer.

"And I couldn't."

My voice was steady now.

Clear.

"Every time I thought about walking away… it felt wrong."

His eyes stayed on mine.

"Not difficult," I continued.

"Not complicated."

I shook my head slightly.

"Just wrong."

Something in his expression shifted again.

"And staying?" he asked.

I didn't even need to think about it.

"Feels right."

The words settled between us.

Simple.

But heavier than anything else I had said before.

Because this wasn't about confusion anymore.

This was certainty.

And that changed everything.

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Careful.

Like he was giving me time to change my mind.

But I didn't.

I didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't hesitate.

I stayed.

"You're not making this easy for me," he said quietly.

A small smile tugged at my lips.

"I thought you liked things simple."

His gaze dropped briefly to my lips, then back to my eyes.

"I do," he said.

A pause.

"But this isn't simple."

My heart skipped.

"No," I admitted.

I stepped closer too now, closing the distance between us.

"It's not."

Silence wrapped around us again.

But this time…

It wasn't about tension.

It was about choice.

About two people standing in the same moment…

fully aware of what they were doing.

And not stopping.

"You're choosing this," he said.

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

And I nodded.

"I am."

My voice was quiet…

but steady.

"And you?" I asked.

Because for the first time—

I needed to hear it from him too.

Not through actions.

Not through moments.

But through words.

He didn't look away.

Didn't hesitate.

"I already did," he said.

My breath caught slightly.

And just like that—

Everything aligned.

No confusion.

No imbalance.

No uncertainty.

Just… mutual understanding.

We were both in this.

Fully.

And that realization settled something deep inside me.

Because this wasn't one-sided.

It wasn't me chasing something unclear.

It was real.

And it was shared.

"You know this changes things," I said softly.

"It already has," he replied.

I let out a small breath, my chest feeling lighter than it had in days.

"Good," I said.

He raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Good?"

A faint smile curved my lips.

"Yeah."

I held his gaze, not looking away this time.

"Because I don't want to go back to what this was before."

His expression softened just enough for me to notice.

"You won't," he said.

And somehow…

I believed him.

Not because it was easy.

Not because it made sense.

But because it felt true.

And right now—

That was enough.

Because the truth was…

I wasn't here by accident anymore.

I wasn't caught up in something I didn't understand.

I wasn't losing control.

I was choosing.

Choosing him.

Choosing this.

Choosing whatever came next.

And for the first time…

That didn't scare me.
