Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Other Way

The alley felt like it was shrinking.

Wardens closed in from both ends, their silver forms catching what little light remained, turning the narrow space into a corridor of cold reflection. There was nowhere left to run. No side paths. No shadows deep enough to hide in.

For the first time since entering the city, Liora felt it clearly—

Fear.

Not the sharp, fleeting kind.

The kind that settles in your chest and refuses to leave.

"Tell me your idea got better," she muttered.

The stranger gave a tight, humorless smile. "Working on it."

"That's not reassuring."

"No one's ever said I was."

The Wardens kept advancing. Slow. Controlled. Like they already knew how this would end.

Liora's hand trembled slightly as she looked down at the shard.

There is another way.

"You said that already," she whispered under her breath. "Now would be a great time to explain."

A pause.

Then....

You won't like it.

"Not a lot of good options right now."

The lead Warden raised its hand again. The air shifted, that same pressure building glass nearby beginning to hum, to tremble, to answer.

Liora's pulse spiked.

"Whatever it is," she said quickly, "just say it."

The voice softened.

You have to let me in.

She froze.

"What does that mean?"

It means trust, it replied. And it means you stop trying to control what you don't understand.

"That sounds like a terrible plan."

It's the only one you have.

Another step. The Wardens were close now. Too close.

The stranger leaned toward her, his voice low. "If you've got something, now's the time."

Liora hesitated.

Everything in her screamed not to do this. She didn't know what the shard was. She didn't know what it wanted. And trusting strange voices in your head was usually a very bad idea.

But staying here?

That was worse.

"…Fine," she whispered. "What do I do?"

The answer came immediately.

Let go.

"Let go of what?"

Everything.

"That's not helpful—"

Liora.

Her name stopped her.

Not the way Kael said it.

Not the way anyone else did.

This felt… deeper.

Older.

Let me show you.

The air around her seemed to still.

The sounds of the city...the footsteps, the shifting glass, even her own breathing faded just slightly, like the world was stepping back to watch.

Liora closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

And let go.

It didn't feel like losing control.

It felt like falling.

Not down...but inward.

Her thoughts scattered, her grip on the world loosening as something else slipped into place. The warmth in her hand spread up her arm, across her chest, into her mind.

Not taking.

Not forcing.

But… merging.

When Liora opened her eyes again...

The world had changed.

The alley was still there.

The Wardens were still there.

But everything looked sharper. Clearer. As if the layers she'd never noticed before had suddenly been peeled back.

She could see the glass now.

Not just as objects but as something connected. Every shard, every fragment, every sliver of reflection linked together in ways that didn't make sense and yet felt completely natural.

Alive.

"Oh," she breathed.

The stranger stared at her. "What did you just do?"

Liora didn't answer.

She was too busy understanding.

The Wardens moved.

Glass rose again, faster this time, more aggressive. A storm of shards spiraled into the air, catching the faintest glimmers of light as they aligned toward her.

But this time...

Liora didn't flinch.

She lifted her hand.

And the glass stopped.

Not all of it.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

The shards trembled in midair, caught between two commands two forces pulling in opposite directions.

The Wardens froze.

For the first time....

They hesitated.

"What…?" the stranger whispered.

Liora's heart raced, but it felt different now. Not panicked. Focused.

Like she was standing at the edge of something vast and somehow, she wasn't afraid of it.

"I think," she said slowly, "I can stop them."

"That would be great," he replied quickly. "You should definitely do that."

"Working on it."

The pressure built.

Liora could feel it like trying to hold back a wave with her bare hands. The Wardens pushed harder, their control over the glass tightening.

For a second, she thought she might lose it.

Then...

You're not alone, the voice reminded her.

Right.

Liora took a breath.

And pushed back.

The glass shifted.

Not violently.

Not all at once.

But steadily.

The shards that had been aimed at her began to turn slowly redirecting, pulling away from her control and slipping into something new.

The Wardens reacted instantly.

One of them stepped forward sharply, its voice breaking that eerie calm. "Impossible."

Liora almost smiled.

"Yeah," she said. "I get that a lot."

With a sharp motion, she threw her hand forward.

The glass surged.

Not toward her...

But past her.

Straight into the Wardens.

They moved to block, to deflect, to regain control...but the moment of hesitation had cost them. The shards slammed into the ground around them, not enough to destroy, but enough to break their formation.

"NOW!" the stranger shouted.

This time, Liora didn't need to be told.

They ran.

They didn't stop for a long time.

Through twisting streets, broken walkways, and half-collapsed passages, they kept moving until the sounds of pursuit finally faded into nothing.

When they finally slowed, Liora leaned against a wall, breathing hard.

The glow in her hand had dimmed.

The connection, whatever it had been fading back into something quieter. Still there… but distant.

The stranger stared at her like she'd just rewritten the rules of the world.

"…You want to explain that?" he asked.

Liora let out a shaky breath.

"Not really," she admitted.

"Fair."

He ran a hand through his hair, still watching her carefully. "Because I've lived here my whole life, and I've never seen anyone do that."

"Yeah," she said softly. "Me neither."

Silence settled between them for a moment.

Then...

"By the way," he added, "you never told me your name."

Liora hesitated.

Then, quietly...

"Liora."

He nodded once. "I'm Ren."

She studied him for a second. "You going to explain why you helped me?"

Ren shrugged lightly. "You looked like you needed it."

"That's it?"

"For now."

Liora didn't fully believe him.

But she let it go.

For now.

Somewhere in the distance, a low, echoing sound rolled through the city.

Not quite an alarm.

Not quite a warning.

But something close.

Ren's expression darkened.

"That's not good."

"What is it?" Liora asked.

He looked toward the upper districts the towering glass spires barely visible against the night.

"It means," he said quietly, "they know exactly who you are now."

Liora's stomach dropped.

And deep in her hand, the shard pulsed once more.

This is only the beginning.
