"Nobody said crates," Pearl said again, quieter this time, making sure we all heard her.
Liora's face changed. She looked scared, or like she was trying to look scared. At this point, I wasn't sure I trusted anything her face did anymore.
"Wait," she said, stepping forward with her hands out. "You can't go down there. Not at night. It's too dangerous."
"That's usually a good sign we're on the right track," Malachi said, already reaching for his coat.
"No, listen." Her voice got higher, more urgent. "Whatever's in those crates, it isn't worth getting hurt over. Please. Let it go. For me."
For me. Like she was asking us to skip dessert, not to ignore a shipment being moved out of the city by armed guards in the middle of the night.
"Liora," I said, "I saw you standing right next to those crates last night. That's not nothing."
