The question filled the quiet room, hanging over the long wooden table like a heavy fog. Professor Corvin's eyes were wide and bright and Benise stood completely still, her ink-stained fingers frozen on the edge of the wood. Beside them, Xavier breathed slowly, but his eyes watched my every move. He was looking at me like I was a rare bug he wanted to stick a pin through for science. Great. No pressure at all.
"Well," Professor Corvin said again, his voice very soft. "What next?"
My eyes moved from the professor to the long purple stone pen resting next to the book. The silver tip caught the bright magic light, practically flashing a sign that said pick me up and ruin your life. A strange pull, like a warm tug in the center of my chest, made my arm move before my brain could even form a protest.
"Amara?" Corvin whispered as I moved closer.
